The chazoin ish, hurricane sandy, and generators.
Today is the chazoin ish’s yohrzeit. One of the things the chazoin iush is remembered for – besides for his pesokim on all the chelkei shulchan oruch, and chiddushim on the entire shas plus mishnayois, are his ma’arochois. Two of his famous ma’arochois were giyus bonois, and using electricity on shabbos, the first which he held was yeihoroig ve’al ya’avoir, the second which he described as someone watching his mother burn and warming himself up by the fire. Both ma’arochois were accepted by the charieidi community in e”y.
I find it somewhat ironic that Hashem arranged davka on his yohrzeit that large parts of the jewish community in the east coast are relying on private generators rather than electricity.

Rabbaim is that what you meant too?
October 31, 2012 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #906519goldersgreenerParticipantmrs. katz – you seem tomlive in eretz yisroel, so you probably aware that the chazoin ish was opposed to using water from the amins on shabbos, and that that “marocho” was less accepted. How do yuo connect that to the hurricane?
November 1, 2012 2:41 am at 2:41 am #906520147Participanthe described as someone watching his mother burn and warming himself up by the fire. Ironic that you Mrs. Katz bring up this incident approximate;y 1 week after Gemorro in Shabbos Perek 2 on Daf Yomi cycle, which discusses someone who literally burnt up his mother-in-law.
November 1, 2012 3:31 am at 3:31 am #906521RABBAIMParticipantNu nu means it is not quite an inspiring Hashgacah pratis. It won’t make it onto my list of repeatable events of life to demonstrate the ongoing presence of Hashem.
November 1, 2012 5:04 am at 5:04 am #906522YW Moderator-42ModeratorI assume the chazon ish was referring to electricity in EY where it might be run by Jews, here in the US that should not be an issue.

I find this absurd. Firstly how do you know what Hashem davka did or didn’t do? Are you privy to the way He decides what happens to each country/person?
Secondly, according to your reasoning – what exactly is the message supposed to be? The Chazon Ish was niftar today 49 years ago, so Hashem is causing a small segment of a different generation of Jews in a different country where the Chazon Ish’s psak is not nogeiah, to make use of some machines that are used to circumvent the halachic problem the Chazon Ish had. Oh – and at the same time, agav, lots of people will die and billions of dollars lost.
Let’s stop trying to guess what Hashem is doing every time something happens. That’s what we had Neviim for and others with Ruach Hakodesh.
For now, let’s just keep His Torah – that’s all He ever asked for.
November 4, 2012 11:03 pm at 11:03 pm #906524Shoe store assistantMemberJust interested, the chazoin Ish also halp that it is forbiiden to wear any sort of footwear on yom kippur, and that one must wear only socks. would thta explain why all shoes and slippers stores were closed on his hilula?
November 5, 2012 7:43 pm at 7:43 pm #906525HaLeiViParticipant147, actually it was the mother-in-law who did it to her daughter-in-law.
November 13, 2012 12:38 am at 12:38 am #906526venahapoich HuMemberShoe store assistant,… hey,… I can’t beleive my eyes … that you beat me to that one … You must be a real real genius [and not sober] if you think the same way as I do … it would also explain why the schools were closed preventing principals from confiscating the shabbos shoes from children who forgot to bring either their sneakers or rollerblades to geography lessons. [They learn about gateshead in geography!!!]
Really really excited that you are being koineh my mehalech
November 14, 2012 12:09 pm at 12:09 pm #906527goldersgreenerParticipantSorry, shoe store assistant and venahapoich, i was dan you lekaf chiva that you are one and the same…….
Anyway, keep us smiling.
By the way i totally fail to understand the origianl post, why should a hurricane hit america because yidden in eretz yisroel are makpid on not using shabbos electricity? If it’s because of the non frum, they are oiver far more serious aveirois, and if it because of the heimisher, they are generally makpid.
