What was gained by the miracle of the budding staff that wasn’t already shown by the miracle of being swallowed up or being consumed by spontaneous combustion?

Anyone can destroy. Creating something good is the real bracha.

BTW, I wish I could live up to that.

My own interpretation — take it or leave it as you please:

The Israelite would soon leave the place where Korach, Dassan and Aviram were buried and could soon be forgotten. The staff, however, served as a permanent reminder.

My thinking is that the ground opening demonstrated that Korach’s actions were wrong, e.g., rebelling against Moshe’s authority, but didn’t conclusively demonstrate that it was Hashem who chose Aharon to be kohen gadol rather than Moshe. The budding staff conclusively demonstrated that Hashem chose Aharon.

I also agree with WolfishMusings that the staff served as a permanent reminder that Hashem set the laws of priestly succession to ward off future disputes.

Someone asked me this question today and this is what I came up with.

In the end of (‘???? ??????? (?”?, ?, Hashem calls to ????? and ???? and says, “… ???? ?? ????” On these words ??”? says “??? ?? ??? ???? ????”. What does that mean? What ????? To listen? Hashem had to ask them to listen? It sounds like Hashem is speaking very softly, why?

The ???? ????? explains that even though Hashem was very angry, He spoke in a soothing voice, a ???? ????! Because if Hashem would have spoke in anger, they would not have listened! That is an amazing statement! Hashem is speaking to two of the most holy people,????? ?????, and if He would have spoke angrly, that would have (subconsciously) tuned out!! The ???? ????? concludes with ?? ????? ???? ??? ????? ????? ????!

Now let’s apply this to here. All that happened had in it a anger of some sorts. Ground opening up and swallowing people. Fire killing people. A plague… Everything had an element of anger and these signs, no matter how amazing, could not penetrate the gentle ???? we were given. Only when Hashem performed a “peaceful” sign could it have the desired effect on a nation built on Living Kindness! This is why after the budding staff ????? was accepted as ??? ???? without question.

We can all take a lesson from this. Sometimes we must say something but it is the manner that it is said that will make it or break it. If we use anger or yell we will not accomplish anything.

Let’s all try to copy the ????? of ????? ???? ??? and in the ???? of us controlling our anger, He will control his and take us back home again, ?????? ??????.

PS, this was not copied from anywhere or heard from any one, these are my own thoughts.

Even Yisrael by Rav Yisroel Yakov Fisher asks your question as well, and says that the budding staff is to show that shevet Levi is in fact entitles to “more” than the other shevatim, as they get 1/10 (10%) whereas the other shevatim only got 1/12 portion in the land. He goes on to explain why this is, but the budding staff proves that its from Hashem.

Beautiful sefer, and not so hard to understand. Not too long, and not too many things on each parsha. But what he says is often a home run

Wolfish, great answer. Actually, whether or not that is the reason for the miracle in the first place, it is obviously true anyhow, since the command to keep it forever was definitely because of what you said.

Avram, the thing is that we have three miracles before this. The ground, the fire, and the plague. Korach, Dassan and Aviram were wrong regardless of their point, but the 250 people seemingly really meant it, and Moshe Rabbeinu said that Hashem would pick out the one He wants. But I guess my Kasha is not that terrible, since the idea is that they weren’t supposed to question Moshe Rabbeinu.

    Thanks for all great answers.

I thought of something along the lines of Avram. The Ness is more a message than a proof. The budding staff is a message from Hashem that He chose Aharon. The other miracles were punishments. The first three showed what was wrong, the last showed was is true.
