I got a text message today that says:
Fwd Fwd Fwd: A woman possibly frum gave a tip to a muslim taxi & out of appreciation, he warned her not to go to manhattan next wednesday
I have been told that this type of hoax/warning has gone around before. Has anybody else received this? Does anyone have any other information?
January 2, 2009 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm #630288abcdParticipantI just got that text. What’s up with it?
January 2, 2009 6:56 pm at 6:56 pm #630289CuriousMemberYup, I’ve received it too and refused to forward it. This is a mighty easy way to create mass hysteria when it is baseless…
January 2, 2009 6:56 pm at 6:56 pm #630290squeakParticipantI will have more information on Thursday.
January 2, 2009 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm #630291CuriousMembersqueak, you are sooo brilliant.
January 2, 2009 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm #630292qawsMemberI got that text too! I heard that the agudah sent an email out about it?
January 2, 2009 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #630293JosephParticipantI grada got a very good chuckle from squeak’s comment!
January 2, 2009 7:14 pm at 7:14 pm #630294squeakParticipantIt was not the ‘comment of the day’, I know, but THANK YOU, Joseph!

January 2, 2009 7:36 pm at 7:36 pm #630299qawsMemberMaybe the yeshiva world editor knows something about this rumor?
January 2, 2009 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm #630300YW Moderator-72Participantthese stories have been going on a long time. every so often, somebody re-circlulates it. all they do is change the date, change the place and hit send.
January 2, 2009 7:44 pm at 7:44 pm #630301qwertyuiopMemberthanx for the info
January 2, 2009 8:03 pm at 8:03 pm #630302JosephParticipantsqueak,

January 3, 2009 4:51 pm at 4:51 pm #630303amichaiParticipantshavua tov! could be a hoax, but the police should definitely be told.
January 4, 2009 1:52 am at 1:52 am #630304Bais Yaakov maydelParticipanti got that text, and then 2 follow-up ones: one said that an israeli police officer pulled over an arab taxi guy and found sketches of the verrazano bridge and times square dated 1/07/09. the second text said that the lady who tipped the arab guy is from monsey and her name is berger and shes speaking with the fbi, and her husband is trying to get her out before shabbos.
January 4, 2009 1:57 am at 1:57 am #630305bitachoncoachingParticipantI personally know the girl that this happened to…she was in a taxi and the driver started to talk to her he mentioned he was from iran. he saw she was dark skinned (sfardi) and assumed she was arab. they spoke. as they were talking he was openly anti america/ semitic etc…she plugged in info from his medalion on to her blackberry. when she arrived at her destination she gave he a nice tip and he told her you seem nice stay out of nyc on january 7th. she then took down his plate number and cabbie company and called the fbi. so…it’s true but it could be he wanted to scare her. in these situations better to err on the side of caution. lets just pray for the best here and in e’y shavua tov.
January 4, 2009 5:58 pm at 5:58 pm #630306Bais Yaakov maydelParticipanta good friend of mine knows someone who knows who it is…the arab taxi driver definitely told this to her, but she’s not sure if it’s true…things are very vague about it
January 4, 2009 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #630307porParticipantFrom bitachoncoaching it sounds like such a warning was genuinely given, the question is how to react to it. It should be put to gedolei ha-dor and see what they say to do. They are our eyes and ears.
January 4, 2009 7:07 pm at 7:07 pm #630308mazal77ParticipantIn light of that situation that is now occuring in Eretz Yisrael and how most of the arabs feel about it, I would take any warning seriously. Be aware of your surroundings. Pray and do chesed, Shmirat Halashon, Say berachot aloud and have others say amen to your berachot, Have your children repeat tehillim word by word after you. Gedolim are calling for tefillah gatherings everywhere. Hashem is sending us messages very clearly of what he wants from us. He wants to call out to Him. He will not let us down if we do what we have to do.
January 4, 2009 7:12 pm at 7:12 pm #630309xeroxMemberThis sounds pretty scary!! Anything being done so far?
January 4, 2009 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #630310qawsMemberAny updates? In the article that the yw editor put up, he wrote that the fbi is looking into this issue. Anyone have any new news?
January 4, 2009 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #630311feivelParticipantupdates
heres an update
do you think that an active underground terrorist cell tells every working arab in a city exactly what and when they are planning?
January 4, 2009 10:59 pm at 10:59 pm #630312xeroxMemberbut then again, why take any chances??
January 4, 2009 11:29 pm at 11:29 pm #630313beaconParticipantI agree with feivel.
January 4, 2009 11:47 pm at 11:47 pm #630314squeakParticipantJoseph, you sure have a looong memory.
January 5, 2009 5:27 am at 5:27 am #630315RoshYeshivahMember#1 is what feivel said. #2 somebody said nyc and somebody said manhattan,so which one do we believe? #3 Maybe he meant a demonstration coming and it wouldn’t be convenient to be there. #4 Maybe he’s just a retard. #5There’s good reason to believe this girl was paranoid due to the present situation in gaza.So basically this a sfek sh’bsfek sfeka and let me sleep in peace!!
January 5, 2009 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm #630316jphoneMemberIf you wouldnt have text messaging like the Rabbonim have requested, you wouldnt have this problem!!!
January 5, 2009 6:53 pm at 6:53 pm #630317intellegentMemberRoshYeshivah,
people refer to manhattan as nyc sometimes.
January 5, 2009 7:29 pm at 7:29 pm #630318havesomeseichelMemberIts all biyadei shamayim (ok, i just learned how to do that, so i am trying it all out…)
It is probably all mass hysteria and that is what terrorists aim to do: scare us all so that we cannot live our normal lives. Just be on the lookout for anything suspicious, and daven to Hashem. I would be extra cautious around arabs while the war is going on because they are pretty upset at Israel and Jews right now (more then their normal fanatical hatred…) so dont do anything to get someone angry… but act out your normal life!
January 5, 2009 8:27 pm at 8:27 pm #630319oomisParticipant“It should be put to gedolei ha-dor and see what they say to do. They are our eyes and ears.”
I think if there were a genuine threat, that people have to use their own seichel, and not rely on the opinions of others. Many of our gedolim of Europe kept telling people to stay put as Hitler Y”S came to power, and we lost a significant number of Jews who could have otherwise been saved had they NOT listened to those rabbonim and instead had run to E”Y or America. With respect, not every issue is a rabbinic one.
January 5, 2009 11:23 pm at 11:23 pm #630320believerParticipantis there any news on this text message warning? shud i be scared?
January 5, 2009 11:39 pm at 11:39 pm #630321yenta101Memberi was speaking to a friend recently and they said they heard two versions of the story.
1) they said Manhattan
2) they said Israel
January 5, 2009 11:45 pm at 11:45 pm #630322believerParticipantwat? that a taxi driver in isreal sed not to come to manhattan on wed?
January 5, 2009 11:48 pm at 11:48 pm #630323havesomeseichelMemberAfter this warning is made by a mod, it seems like everyone has already heard it or knows the person. It all sounds like a scare tactic and nonsense to me. there are too many conflicting details.
January 5, 2009 11:51 pm at 11:51 pm #630324dunnoMembertrue or not true, it wouldn’t hurt anyone to be cautious
January 5, 2009 11:51 pm at 11:51 pm #630325believerParticipanti think there is some truth to it. but ppl took it way overboard. y not stay on the safe side nd x go? wait to go a different day.
January 6, 2009 12:09 am at 12:09 am #630326believerParticipantregarding the text going around with the taxi driver pulled over and they saw a sketch of the verrazano bridge. wat do u think of that?
January 6, 2009 12:28 am at 12:28 am #630327Bais Yaakov maydelParticipanti know for a fact that this the taxi driver DID say to the girl, who is from Monsey, that she should stay out of the city on wednesday. however, we dont know that what he said has any significance.
the police came to my school today to discuss it….they said there is nothing to be alarmed about, if something was going on they would def. know about it. then again, remember 9/11…..but it’s not like any random taxi driver in NYC knew about the attacks. at least not that i know of
January 6, 2009 12:40 am at 12:40 am #630328mazal77Participantwell what about the stories of arabs who knew about 9/11. The cab driver mistook this woman for a good moslem. You know in this type of world that we live in, nothing like this should suprise us and Rosh Yeshiva, do you really think we are so safe in America?? Anything can happen.
January 6, 2009 12:54 am at 12:54 am #630329qwertyuiopMemberi heard from someone that the story is true but the threat is not
January 6, 2009 4:09 am at 4:09 am #630330qawsMemberQwertyuiop- who did you hear that from? Someone reliable? How does that person know?
January 6, 2009 7:14 am at 7:14 am #630331qwertyuiopMemberSomebody who has connections to the police, but he said things could change during the day.

Some of us work in Manhattan.
BTW – New York City covers the five boroughs (Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island). Manhattan is a part of New York City. Many people call Manhattan NYC colloquially though.
January 6, 2009 6:24 pm at 6:24 pm #630334intellegentMembernyc does include all five boroughs but it can be referred to as new york city. when addressing an envelope to a location in brooklyn the city state would be “brooklyn, NY”, to manhattan it would be, “new york, NY”
anyway, what’s the scoop with all this. I know a few people who work in manhattan including my father, is there a real threat? it’s scary, can they all just take off every time they hear a buba maasa?
January 6, 2009 6:24 pm at 6:24 pm #630336believerParticipantSJSinNYC- obviously if u work there then u gotta go. but be precautious. and if u happen to not work then dont just go shopping in manhattan. save it for a different day. u know wat i mean.
January 6, 2009 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm #630337squeakParticipantHey listen, I don’t buy the bottom line off of snopes every time, but be realistic. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on – shame on, uh Condi, what was that line again? Oh right, fool me twice, shame on me. If you’ve never heard this hoax before then it’s one thing, but this is at least the fourth time I’ve seen this ‘warning’ come up. Snopes is right.
If you have room to change something in your life based on current events (who doesn’t?) then let it be because of the matziv in EY. Amazing how little we are shaken by real live scary events and how much we can be shaken by hoaxes.
