What would happen if we pressed the reset button on welfare? The government should restart the welfare program and have all those in need reapply. The government should do their homework on applicants and make sure only citizens get it. Also they should find out who makes money under the table and limit their welfare according to their income. I think the government should reset welfare every 2 years so they can regulate it better and make sure people who don’t need it don’t get it. That will definitely solve part of our deficit
December 28, 2012 5:12 am at 5:12 am #916356ChulentMemberWelfare receipients must renew/reapply every six months. And a renewal requires all the same information as a new application. Its always been like that.
December 28, 2012 6:57 am at 6:57 am #916357TheBearIsBackMemberWhat would happen is that a significant part of the Democrat voter base would be alienated.
In addition, the Otisviller Beis Medrash would overflow with yingeleit.
December 28, 2012 2:00 pm at 2:00 pm #916358gavra_at_workParticipantOf all programs, welfare is not the one to go after. Corporate welfare on the other hand…
December 30, 2012 12:43 am at 12:43 am #916359rebdonielMemberWhen people with $6000 fur shtreimels, $1500 wigs, fancy jewelry, sterling silver, crystal chandeliers, and $45.00 briskets are collecting welfare, you know the system is corrupt. Essentially, working people like me are robbed to subsidize laziness.
December 30, 2012 1:05 am at 1:05 am #916360ChulentMemberrebdoniel: Take your antisemitism elsewhere.
December 30, 2012 2:38 am at 2:38 am #916361MorahRachMemberNo I agree with rebdoniel. 100%.
December 30, 2012 3:33 am at 3:33 am #916362yaakov doeParticipantVery few of ours are on Welfare, but Food Stamp benefits are an epidemic in our community.
December 30, 2012 4:07 am at 4:07 am #916363rebdonielMemberAntisemitism? The only way to acquire Torah is through bread and salt. The luxurious lifestyles and gashmius we see today among even those who live off the system is disgusting.
Is it fair that people don’t get marriage licenses, claim their homes as minyanim for tax exempt status, and collect welfare while living in luxury?
What is wrong with simplicity? Why can’t a woman wear a shpitzle or a snood? Why can’t a Hassidishe man wear a fake fur shtreimel? Why can’t people limit their meat consumption to once a week, and leave it at chicken, for that matter? People need to live within their means.
I work hard, go to college, attend regular shiurim, and live as cheaply as possible, which enables me to give to others in need, as much as I can.

December 30, 2012 1:24 pm at 1:24 pm #916365zahavasdadParticipantGo to most supermarket stores in Borough park or lakewood and you will see a very high percentage of people using the Benefit card (Food Stamps isnt a stamp anymore its a card like an ATM card)
December 30, 2012 2:37 pm at 2:37 pm #916366just meParticipantrebdoniel, who said that every person on programs has to sell everything they got before they had money issues? Who says many expensive looking jewelry isn’t really fakes under $10? Are you looking into homes to see who still owns sterling? Are you complaining that they own it or are buying it? As for meat, many people only eat meat on Shabbos if that. Look to your own neshama and don’t worry about yenem.
December 30, 2012 3:21 pm at 3:21 pm #916367rebdonielMemberThey’re not lies.
I am in this community and know the tricks and scams people pull.
December 31, 2012 12:44 am at 12:44 am #916368kfbParticipantIt’s so funny bc frum Jews are so meticulous in how they observe Halacha, but what about STEALING?? It’s straight up stealing when they take money from the government when they don’t need it.
December 31, 2012 2:11 am at 2:11 am #916369rebdonielMemberThose who generally are most makpid on chumros in Yoreh Deah are the most mekil on Choshen Mishpat.
The tension between ritual and ethics is most unfortunate and was never intended to even be a tension, yet the Nevi’im were most aware of this when they condemn the am for being concerned with korbanot and whatnot when people are going hungry.
December 31, 2012 2:47 am at 2:47 am #916370americaisoverParticipantThis is news? This has been going on since Johnson (LBJ) made it easier to get welfare, food stamps and Medicaid if you dont work while those who work like myself get NOTHING but tzoros and taxes from this govt may Hashem bring it down. Lakewood, BP and Williamsburg would collapse without govt handouts or better yet the people would have to rachmana letzlan WORK (oy the issue doraisa). This is what all Dems want dependency whether in the projects or in kollel its all the same.
December 31, 2012 2:56 am at 2:56 am #916371zahavasdadParticipantIve seen people pull out the ebt (food Stamps) cards from a coach bag. Maybe the bags are fake I dont know as I cant tell the fakes from a real one. But I am sure some of them are real.
December 31, 2012 3:04 am at 3:04 am #916372shmoelMemberHow are you sure? You are not sure; you merely are projecting your biases.
December 31, 2012 3:35 am at 3:35 am #916373rebdonielMemberThis is why it disgusts me to have to pay taxes.
Anyone who takes welfare is in one way or another a thief who steals from people like me who produce and contribute to society.
December 31, 2012 4:57 am at 4:57 am #916374MorahRachMemberShmoel you seem very defensive. Do you have any evidence that what people are saying here is false? I h e said this in many threads and I will again; the overuse of food stamps and welfare is out of control. I know so many people unfortunately who work off the books yet collect every benefit they can. I have friends in Lakewood who have 2/3 kids but never got legally married, so my friend is on welfare as a single mother. She gets every possible benefit while her his and is learning, she is working full time off the books and her parents are paying their rent and car Etc. erev rosh hashana this year she sent me a picture of this stunning woolen yuntif outfit for her son and said you should come to Lakewood and get ( my son) a Yuntif out, I said I would love too but it’s probably out of my price range. She said something like ” lol yeah so ask your parents for the money”. What a sad world we live in!
December 31, 2012 6:10 am at 6:10 am #916375agittayidParticipantA parental goal is to encourage their children to become independent adults. Children by their nature seek to become independent of their parents. Just observe how eagerly they learn to walk, ride a bike etc. They don’t want to be remain dependent on their parents pushing them forever in the stroller. Lately it has become topsy turvy in the frum world. Young adults are encouraged to stay dependent on their parents, charity, and the government well into adulthood. The encouragement of dependency is a great disservice to children and adults.
December 31, 2012 10:50 am at 10:50 am #916376akupermaParticipantThey already have such restrictions for welfare programs aimed at able-bodied adults. Most of the welfare programs are aimed at people who are disabled, elderly or too young to work – such as Social Security, disability, WIC, food stamps, medicaid. Needless to say, the frum community benefits greatly from welfare spending, and as we tend to be in the “47%” who don’t pay income taxes rather than the “1%” who pay most of the income tax – it is a good deal for our community.
December 31, 2012 11:44 am at 11:44 am #916377studentParticipantEverything rebdoniel is saying is correct. What bothers me even more, are people who claim poverty, receive tremendous tuition breaks, then spend thousands of dollars on fancy vacations, cars, clothes etc. Who do you think picks up the slack for these tuition breaks? Hard working people who scarifice many luxuries and prioritize what they actually need. If everyone paid their share (instead of trying to trick the yeshivos by claiming zero income) perhaps the tutuition crisis wouldn’t be as bad.
December 31, 2012 2:43 pm at 2:43 pm #916378MorahRachMemberWIC is not for the disabled I don’t know where you heard that.i ” qualified” when I was pregnant but never signed up or took the money because I was working full time.
December 31, 2012 2:43 pm at 2:43 pm #916379lopman24ParticipantThis is going to have a “Dwekian” end with mass arrests. Here is the scenario: Big heimishe business man/store/pharmacy/ upset partner is caught with some white collar stuff in exchange for saving their own skin they are willing to cooperate with the government …. with regard to information about their other big hemishe business man/store/pharmacy/ upset partner relatives etc.
