Why do teenagers get so annoyed when they are told that they’re acting like a teenager? I don’t get annoyed when I’m told that I act like an adult!

    edit: not a serious thread.

Because teenagers think they’re on top of the world and that they know better than everyone else. Thus telling them they’re teenagers is telling them that they’re just young buffoons.

Because being told that you’re a teenager is usually in response to exasperating behavior, which means that it turns into an insult, while being told you’re an adult is considered a compliment.

Maybe the term for what a person de facto is should not be used as an insult.

teenagers get frustrated with this because when its said its usually said along the lines of adults saying they where also teens at one point or that teens can get annoying…. sometimes peopel feel like what htey go through others dont know or its hard to describe and when some peole say things like “your acting like a teenager” they feel they are trying to say they know how it feels

Its generally the condensending tone of the teenage-caller which does it. If a kid, like twelve or something, would say to a teenage “Wow, you’re a teenager”, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind

You really want to annoy someone? Tell someone in their 20s that they are acting like a teenager.

also, to a 2 yr old- you’re such a baby!

Or to a 5-8 yr old- you’re just a little kid.

To a teen- you’re acting like a teen

to a serious person- you’re so serious!

To a sensitive soul- why are you so sensitive!?

To a 50+ -‘it was an older lady, yeah like your age’

    etc etc etc

That reminds me of a time I was working with another person on seating arrangements for a banquet. I knew some of the people and she knew some of the people. When she would ask me about someone I would say “about my age,” and she would respond, “oh, old.” At the time I was 40.

I tell my teenagers that they are acting like babies. But it’s not really their fault. That’s just the way they were born.

ezer15- I guess we now know what the 15 represents in your SN. Quit acting like a teenager 🙂

The teenager who inspired this thread was extremely amused by everyone’s responses, and adds that it’s ageist.

Ageism only works one way, discriminating against the old, not against the young. Disciminating against the young is just called putting them in their proper place.

Because this is typically not exactly said as a compliment. Unless you are telling someone, you are as beautiful and youthful as a teenager (and you are talking to a middle aged woman), it probably will not be perceived as a positive statement.

When you call a teenager a teenager it is never actually in a positive way, yet no one would say to an adult “You’re such an adult” and even if they did it wouldn’t be too hurtful.

are we talking of teenage boys or girls (2 differant parshas altogether)
