    They have said: ‘Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.’

    ו כִּי נוֹעֲצוּ לֵב יַחְדָּו; עָלֶיךָ, בְּרִית יִכְרֹתוּ. 6 For they have consulted together with one consent; against Thee do they make a covenant;

    ז אָהֳלֵי אֱדוֹם, וְיִשְׁמְעֵאלִים; מוֹאָב וְהַגְרִים.

    7 The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab, and the Hagrites;

    ח גְּבָל וְעַמּוֹן, וַעֲמָלֵק; פְּלֶשֶׁת, עִם-יֹשְׁבֵי צוֹר.

    8 Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;

    ט גַּם-אַשּׁוּר, נִלְוָה עִמָּם; הָיוּ זְרוֹעַ לִבְנֵי-לוֹט סֶלָה.

    9 Assyria also is joined with them; they have been an arm to the children of Lot. Selah

    Netanyahu wisely seems to be seizing the opportunities created by the power vacuum to secure a more defensible border situation and take out any Iranian assets in Syria knowing that neither the U.S. or Russia will intervene.

    Ashur is northwestern iraq
    Certainly not the main parts of syria which would be aram (aleppo is aram tzova, damascus was the capital of ancient aram see melachim beis 5:12, 16:9)
    Gevol is north of Eretz Yisrael, and יֹשְׁבֵי צוֹר is Lebanon (Hezbollah)

    Historian? Assyria was in current Northern Iraq. Mosul is Ninve. ISIS destroyed what Arabs thought was kever Yonah there. Syria is Aram.

    The Gemara mentions both אשור and סוריה as different places. One has nothing to do with the other.

    Part of confusion might be that Aram produced Aramaic language that became language of Assyrian empire and then whole middle east and Gemora …

    Another – apparently Greeks used the term Syria first as applied to Assyria proper, but later when Seleucids established their empire, this word was applied jointly to Assyria and Aram. Empire had 2 capitals: Seleucia near Baghdad and Antioch (then Syria, now Turkiye). Rome captured Seleucia right after Chanukkah. So, when Roman Pompei in next century captured Antioch from Armenians (sic, more similar sounding nations!) – this Aram part became roman province Syria.

    The Syrians of today are largely Arabs with a big mixture of Greeks and Romans. They aren’t the ones referred to in Taanach, and more than American Jews are American Indians.
