Do you think it’s tzniusdig for teens to be speaking / texting on cell phones on the street?

    yes 😛

in fact it is so commonm for teens to be doing this it would bring attention if teens didnt do it…isnt that what tznius means? not attracting attention?

Is it tsniusdig to cross the street when you’re not at a crosswalk? Is it tsniusdig to get out of your car in a traffic jam to see how much further the backup continues? Is it tsniusdig to stand up on a train if all the seats are taken, or should you not get on the train?

common squeak i’m sure you know the answers, if it a teen does something that’s normal & expected then where is there a question of it being un tznisdug?!?!?!

Chunchie: it’s ok to talk bit not loudly, & be carefull when you text watch where you walk & make sure not to bump into ppl. cuz then it would be untznisdug!

Are ppl. really that bored her that you come up with the weirdest questions??????

I’m not sure why a teen is different from an adult. Can someone elucidate?

Is it is tznius to talk to someone in the street? Why is using a phone any different?

Mrs. chunchie: (can’t imagine you’re a guy asking this)

Do you really mean “Tznius” or “appropriate” may be a better question.

Just because its “Tznius” doesn’t mean it should be done.

I think chunchie’s question is more general than teens – i.e. if it is tzniusdik for women to be blabbing on a cell (or off a cell) in the street.

In Oz Vehadar it says girls should not converse loud (or congregate) in the street, as it isn’t proper tznius to do so.

why is it any more appropriate for a boy/man to talk loudly on the phone or to text than it is for a girl/woman?

    #947334

anonymrs, both are inappropriate (loud talking on the street), yet its worse by a girl for tznius purposes.

What about the fact that many streets are noisy and you need to talk loudly?

I actually wish we could get rid of cellphones. I’m tired of everyone thinking they can reach me all the time(is my house phone or work phone not good enough?)

I think by now people are used to seeing others on their cell phones and it doesn’t draw attention to the woman. What draws my attention is when someone is walking around talking to themselves but it’s really to a blue tooth. I guess I’ll get used to it too!

What’s the difference if someone talks on a phone in the street? Is it any different if they’re talking to thier friend that’s standing next to them? Why wouldn’t that be appropiate or Tznius? Many adults talk on the phone on the street, what’s the dif?

I think the question is going after the wrong target. I think a better question would be “Is talking on a cellphone in the middle of the street proper and/or polite?” It’s not really a tznius issue.

If something is loud and attention drawing, it lacks tznius.

Talking on a cell phone in the street is one thing, yelling down the phone for all and sundry to hear is another. It’s all relative to the teen/person in question, where they are when talking and what it’s all about.

To merely screech gossip at the top of one’s voice is not be acceptable for anyone, even teens! but to chat these days is more or less acceptable

chillmaster: you haved to do bold and italics, i’ll teach you how:

for bold: <x>your post</x> (replace x’s with strong)

for italics: <x>your post</x> (replace x’s with em)

for bold and italics: <x><x>your post</x></x> (replace first and last x with strong, and the other x’s with em)

    good luck!!$

I think texting and walking has gotten out of hand these days. Twice already someone almost bumped into me because they were so engrossed in their thumbs.

    #947365

yes. its tznius. is it practical? thats another question.

I’m glad that with terrorists, and bombings, and other majorly important issues going on in our country, this is what is on your mind. How about if YOU don’t think it’s Tsnius, you don’t do it?

Would you say that we should leave boys who smoke alone because there are worse things in the world?

If it’s not tzniusdig, it’s not tzniudig. (I happen to not think it’s untzniusdig, but I still don’t think it’s smart.)

Things aren’t ok just because there are worse things.

Toi, long time no see – I’m not getting into that. It wasn’t my point. I was giving an example which a female poster can appreciate, likely l’shitasah.

Anyhow, should we ignore it if a guy has guns, just because there are worse things? What about smoking guns?

DY, I don’t understand your post. You are equating someone who smokes to someone who talks on a cell phone? So you would turn down a shidduch for your son of you heard the girl has a cell phone? Good luck finding a shidduch.

Also, I am quite the pro gun morah. So that example doesn’t make sense to me either!

DY, I don’t understand your post.

    That’s correct.

You are equating someone who smokes to someone who talks on a cell phone?

    No

So you would turn down a shidduch for your son of you heard the girl has a cell phone?

    No

    Good luck finding a shidduch.

    Thank you.

Also, I am quite the pro gun morah.

I’ll bet those kids never talk without raising their hands!

See, my point wasn’t about guns, about smoking, or about cell phones. My point is about dismissing possibly important issues just because there are more important issues.

Its funny how people always talk about how Culas lead to OTD’s but never say chumras lead to OTD-ness

Sorry, your post is nonsense. The people who say that indeed do think that kulas lead to OTD, and that chumras have the exact opposite reaction. There is no inconsistency in that theory.

Although, I happen to think that neither leads to OTD. Depending on how you define kulah. If you define kulah as not keeping normative halacha, then yes, teaching your kids to not keep normative halacha means you are OTD and your kids are probably the same as you.

This whole cell phone converstion is not Halacha, its a chumra.

Its not inconsisant at all to say that too many chumras lead poeople over the edge, It clearly says you are not to veer from the torah from the left or the RIGHT

If you think that means that it is assur to do chumras, you are very mistaken. The gemara is full of chumras that it discusses amoraim doing, and does so with admiration usually. (with exceptions like Rabi Tarfon who did like Beis Shammai)

Why just in a few day’s ago’s daf we had the story of the tannaim on the boat who were machmir against the halacha for techum shabbos.

Am I wrong to propose that talking on a cellphone cannot be defined as tsanua or otherwise, but that it depends on how it’s done: politely and safely, or the opposite?

    Not in my opinion.
