i was at a very yeshivish wedding last night. Both chosson and kallah came from b”h large families. All the sisters were chewing gum throughout the wedding. Feh.
August 18, 2011 2:14 am at 2:14 am #800892NYBDMemberI have always said that the old[er] chewing gum on the streets are such an eyesore.
August 18, 2011 8:26 am at 8:26 am #800893kapustaParticipantLike several people mentioned, there is chewing gum and there’s doing jaw exercise. I don’t like the way it looks but someone chewing gum, mouth closed, is not so bad. The other just makes someone look… not very good.
AYC- agreed. http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/the-kiddush-hashem-thread
August 18, 2011 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm #800894WIYMemberIt probably starts at a young age and develops into a bad habit. It really looks disgusting but the chewers don’t realize what they look like or think its normal because others are doing it too.
August 18, 2011 6:18 pm at 6:18 pm #800895a maminParticipantI find it very unclassy the way some people chew their gum, to put it mildly! As far as Tznius is concerned , anything that makes people look can be questionable.
August 18, 2011 6:21 pm at 6:21 pm #800896mustangriderMemberseriously guys i dont get why u are all getiing worked up about this…. some chew gum some dont – who cares???
August 18, 2011 6:22 pm at 6:22 pm #800897happy faceMemberI think it depends on how u chew your gum!!! You don’t have to make it obvious that you are chewing on a piece of gum!!
August 18, 2011 6:28 pm at 6:28 pm #800898TheGoqParticipantDoes it look any less disgusting when boys do it???
August 18, 2011 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm #800899frumster22Membercan sombody please explain to me whats wrong with chewing gum
August 18, 2011 7:10 pm at 7:10 pm #800900happy faceMemberhmmmm… I can’t imagine boys chewing gum!!Girls have to adhere to the laws of Tznius!!! Woman must be eidal and refined, chewing gum openly in the street is not tzniusdig at all!! In the case of a boy, i would imagine them chewing on a piece of paper, or a toothpick rather then gum!

August 18, 2011 7:15 pm at 7:15 pm #800902apushatayidParticipantAre they chewing gum, or their cud?
I walk the same Ave J, Ave M, 13th Ave, 16th Ave like many posters here. How is it that I don’t notice these things and everyone else does?
The punctuation in this title leads had me a little confused at first.
“Teenage girls and older chewing gum on the street” . I was confused what someone might mean by older chewing gum on the street, especially as it related to teenaged girls.
August 18, 2011 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #800903ToiParticipanti think any1 chewing gum on the street is boorish.as an aside my mother once tried to redd a shidduch- after giving glowing info on a special girl the mother had one question,”does she chew gum?”
my mother, utterly astounded, answered,” I dont know if she chew gum. But i do.”
August 18, 2011 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm #800904Boris KarshinaParticipantia a girl walking down the steet eating a doughnut a tznius issue? its not nice and i think gemara says a person who does so is pasul for eidus but i dont think its a tznius issue
August 19, 2011 2:00 am at 2:00 am #800905mewhoParticipantthere are people out there who will look for things to pick on.
why cant people be happy and busy with themselves instead of looking at what others do under a microscope.
August 19, 2011 2:23 am at 2:23 am #800906mustangriderMemberMewho I honestly couldn’t agree with u more!!!
August 19, 2011 3:33 am at 3:33 am #800907apushatayidParticipantGiven a choice, I’d rather share the sidewalk with a female who chewed gum than a male who smoked.
August 19, 2011 8:04 am at 8:04 am #800908tomim tihyeMemberchewing gum
makes you dumb
August 19, 2011 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #800910MichaelCMemberI think its just nervousness, OFD girls go in the streets and want to meet boys, if and when the girls meet someone, they have a ‘stress ball’ in there mouth.
August 20, 2011 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm #800911ToiParticipantactually the gemara also says ha’ochel bashuk domeh lakelev. i would also like to point out that the fact that it grabs mens attentions is the litmus test. someone posted b4 that we shouldnt be looking – fakert! ( i dont mean we should be looking lol) if its grabbing attention we’re not trying to look- it’s in our faces- which is a general guideline for whats not tznius.
August 21, 2011 5:30 am at 5:30 am #800912HealthParticipantI remember hearing from Rav Y. Galinsky either directly or s/o told me, he said chewing gum is not the thing to do because you look like a cow.
August 21, 2011 5:51 am at 5:51 am #800914WIYMemberMods please delete haQer’s post.
ok, fine. But I thought it was funny. 🙂

It would have started a war lol.
August 21, 2011 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #800918twistedParticipantuntzniusdik, not really, but not befitting beni melachim either. As is the quaint, discusting EY habit to walk in the street or sit at a bus stop eating garinin and spewing shells everywhere.
August 22, 2011 2:07 am at 2:07 am #800919QuestionForYouParticipantGenerally speaking, unless there’s a medical necessity for chewing gum (e.g. dry mouth),
anyone chewing gum loudly, in public, with his/her mouth open, and with a “crackling” noise and/or “popping bubbles,” looks extremely disgusting and like he/she is “chewing the cud like a cow” and shouldn’t do it.
August 22, 2011 1:47 pm at 1:47 pm #800920mewhoParticipantmany chew gum to aid in dieeting.
for the record, i have been to the krm supermarket and seen women in shaitels (50 plus years old) chewing gum. it didnt make me think they were not tzniusdik.
one actually crackeled the gum and that annoys my husband tremendoussly.
we once went to a concert and a woman two rows behind us kept crackling her gum. i finally turned around and asked her not to crackle as we came to hear the concert by the musicians not the crackling of her chewing gum…she did stop!
August 22, 2011 5:37 pm at 5:37 pm #800921ginger311Memberchewing gum in the streets is fine. dont make it in to a big deal if its not. eating in the streets is a different story.
August 22, 2011 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm #800922HealthParticipantginger311 – Thanks for your opinion, but a Godol holds differently than you. I hope you don’t mind if he argues with you.
August 22, 2011 6:44 pm at 6:44 pm #800923ginger311MemberHEALTH never heard a godol say that. which godol?
August 22, 2011 11:30 pm at 11:30 pm #800925amazingirl97Participantit’s not really okay to do it but if you wanna you shouldn’t chew really loudly so the whole neighborhood can hear you. you should chew softly and maybe take 1 piece of gum not the whole box. hope this helps!
August 23, 2011 2:05 am at 2:05 am #800926apushatayidParticipantChewing on the box will almost certainly cause heads to turn.
August 23, 2011 3:38 am at 3:38 am #800927HealthParticipantginger311 – It’s in my post above. It’s a good idea to read the posts on the topic before you add your two cents.
You seem to be at that teenage girl age, were you think you know everything.
