Ok, there is a lot of hype about girls chewing gum. What about Boys? I think if you follow the opinion that it is not tznius for girls, then the same applies to boys.
Anyone feel otherwise?
August 22, 2011 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm #801580Bar ShattyaMembertry rav moshe feinstein for starters
August 22, 2011 6:49 pm at 6:49 pm #801581TheGoqParticipantI don’t think anyone should chew old chewing gum that’s on the street very unsanitary.
August 22, 2011 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #801582bptParticipantA bochur chewing gum? Major attitude. Will most likely go hand in hand with wearing his shirt untucked, and sunglasses. (the shades are so you cannot see the pain in their eyes)
They may also be from “the best yeshiva / best family” ect, but scratch the surface, and you find not a kid at risk. You’ll find a kid who is waste deep in all sorts of troubling behavior. Think cholent (or Walmart, depending on the season) at 2:00am
Gum chewing may or not be a tnzius issue, but it sure is a red flag.
August 22, 2011 7:45 pm at 7:45 pm #801583golden momMemberfor sure! my boys went on a big trip om camp and the bought mentos (didnt even know they make gum) and my boys didnt know it was gum and it was taken away from them
August 23, 2011 3:00 am at 3:00 am #801584WIYMemberWait so for guys it shows he is a kid at risk and for girls its just about having good breath?
August 23, 2011 3:54 am at 3:54 am #801585mustangriderMemberlol goq!
WIY i think its about having good breath for both 🙂 i still fail to understand how gum – which is candy! any other candy banned? – equals “at risk”
August 23, 2011 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm #801586YW Moderator-42ModeratorI am currently chewing the new Mentos gum
(I’m a bit older than a teenager btw)
August 23, 2011 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm #801587HachamMemberMiddle age is more than a bit older.
August 23, 2011 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #801588bptParticipant“I am currently chewing the new Mentos gum”
No kidding? Sunglasses and untucked shirt too?
August 23, 2011 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #801589Israeli ChareidiParticipantThere’s nothing wrong with chewing gum on the street – just make sure that you crawl on all fours and say moo.
Otherwise – as Harav Menashe Klien Shlit”a said (he was being asked about chewing powder gum on shabbos – which many poskim have said is an issur de’oiraisa of Losh), “Is such a thing muttar during the week?!?”
It is simply not honorable for a human being to do it.
They used to say (in the days when it was applicable) if it’s too demeaning for the president to do in public then a Jew is definitely far beyond such things.
That’s also why it’s not tznius. Tznius is about being a tzelem elokim above all the other creatures of the earth. True, we must eat – but we don’t need to chew our cud.
August 23, 2011 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #801590frumster22Memberim sorry i fail to understand how chewing gum is a red flag that a teenager is at risk
August 23, 2011 9:15 pm at 9:15 pm #801591Sam2ParticipantSince it was mentioned, what is the deal with sunglasses? I have an older female relative who has serious eye issues and needs to wear sunglasses. She was walking to a store in a certain community (I won’t say where) where she was not-so-politely informed that it was not acceptable to wear sunglasses in that community as it isn’t Tznius. Can someone explain the whole idea there? I assume they wouldn’t also ask Rav Ovadiah to remove his sunglasses on the street, would they?
August 23, 2011 9:17 pm at 9:17 pm #801592bptParticipant“how chewing gum is a red flag”
Look at the kids hangin’ out at the mall / pizza place / shopping center parking lot and tell me what you see. Then, check the cholent places past midnight and tell me what you see.
Which is not to say that all gum chewers are at risk, and that all non-chewers are iron clad yeshiva boys.
But on the whole, gum in public is not a nosh, and not to clean plaque off their teeth.
Its a statement.
August 23, 2011 9:21 pm at 9:21 pm #801593optimusprimeMemberI think its an act in memory of the days when Brooklyn was mostly farmland
August 23, 2011 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm #801594bptParticipantI’m thinking the “lords of Flatbush” days. (for those of you 40 and under, google it so you see what I mean)

August 24, 2011 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #801602bptParticipantPlease, save me the trouble of asking each time. If you are a gum chewer, please specify what brand of shades you wear (extra points, if you wear RayBans, ala T. Cruise)
