November 6, 2013 11:13 pm at 11:13 pm #987602fkellyMemberPeople can completely follow Halacha and still not dress modestly. There’s nothing assur about that. I had a teacher who always said we need to stop making sensitivities into Halachos. For example, denim, 4 inches past the knee, etc

Please, it is barely Chanukah yet. I am in no rosh for Purim!
November 7, 2013 1:20 am at 1:20 am #987606rationalfrummieMemberIt’s called naval b’rishus hatorah, which is a fancy way of saying that technically it is mutar but really shouldn’t be done l’ma’aseh. Don’t do it.
November 7, 2013 1:24 am at 1:24 am #987607for you the the-art-of-moi i shall clarify up. There is a problem in many neighborhoods that women dress in ways that are technically tznius but definitely attracts mens attention. Weather it is a flashy style or a little too tight it still has men looking at them. I can personally say as a Baal Tshuva i have seen many non religious women who werent technically tznius but chose clothes that didnt attract attention to themselves. I can personally say it is a nisayon for me.
November 7, 2013 1:39 am at 1:39 am #987608interjectionParticipantHalacha is you’re supposed to do your best not to look. She did her best but where’s your effort?
November 7, 2013 1:56 am at 1:56 am #987609and the funniest thing is some of these women say they dress like this is for the pleasure of their husbands
November 7, 2013 2:28 am at 2:28 am #987610YatzmichMemberobserver-
I grew up yeshivish and still am yeshivish, but the way the women dress today is a nisayon for EVERYBODY. Whether they admit it or not, it’s a nisayon. BIG TIME. Women are revealing body parts that have been covered forever. Yes, even yeshivisha women are doing it. Come to my neighborhood, you’ll see a typical yeshivisha guy with the unkempt beard and dirty eyeglasses walking with his wife dressed like you wouldn’t believe; short, tight, etc. The scary part is, the younger generation of women are growing up with this, and they’re thinking it’s normal.
November 7, 2013 4:53 am at 4:53 am #987611frumnotyeshivishParticipantYatzmich – “they’re thinking it’s normal.” Good! Then there’s no problem of tznius violations. I think the main problem is that the men aren’t keeping up with what’s normal. Well start, then. If a man has etzba k’tana issues (read: improper thoughts about “normally” dressed women), how DARE he blame the women? Obviously, minhag hamakom doesn’t remove the issur histaklus of actual ervah. But this is not the issue here. What we’re discussing is men like you making blanket statements about all men. It’s not a nisayon for me, and shouldn’t be for you. Take some responsibility.
“typical yeshivisha guy with the unkempt beard and dirty eyeglasses”
As someone who isn’t yeshivish I nonetheless take offense to your bigoted stereotype. Many yeshivisha people try to look respectable. Your statement reminds me of how Nazis described Jews.
November 7, 2013 5:39 am at 5:39 am #987612WIYMemberFrum
His point is that people got used to dressing untznius to the point that they don’t even realize what they are doing. I live in boro park which generally is better than other neighborhoods well generally but not always I was surprised to see a woman with 2 sweet looking Bais yakov girls neither older than ten or so dressed in uniform looking like eidel BY girls and mom is wearing a skirt that while standing is at least an inch above the beginning of the knee from the top. Extremely untznius skirt and there are others like her out there. I have grown tired posting about this topic because it’s getting worse and the people who can do something about it are not reading these threads. I’m assuming most of the posters here keep hilchos tznius properly therefore we are preaching to the choir.

“Bigoted sterotype?”
Are you trying to be funny? I’m one of them! I think I can sterotype my own type if I please.
November 7, 2013 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #987614keepitcomingMemberfkelly– ur teacher didnt mean not to keep those things- no denim or 4inches.. girls have to be taught what is really halacha and what are sensitivities than they can choose for themleves what they want. halacha says the entire knee must be covered in all posotions so the rabanim said only a skirt that is 4 inches below the knee can do that (which is true). denim is no halacha but it does say bchukosehem lo telechu- dont follw in their ways- goyim. which all of the in style ppl can fall into that issur. why does everyone get stuck on the little details. hashem wants whats best for us why do we think we know better and try to get away with the most we could and act like goyim
November 7, 2013 10:33 pm at 10:33 pm #987615fkellyMemberI know what she meant. I’m just saying that at first you need to keep Halacha. Collarbones, knees, elbows. Then you can worry about chumrahs and sensitivities. But sometimes people look at girls as if they’re not so tznius when in reality they are completely following Halacha.
November 8, 2013 2:46 am at 2:46 am #987616writersoulParticipant“halacha says the entire knee must be covered in all posotions so the rabanim said only a skirt that is 4 inches below the knee can do that (which is true).”
How do you know? I have plenty of skirts which completely cover my knees without being four inches below my knee.
November 8, 2013 4:49 am at 4:49 am #987617OURtorahParticipantObserver of yeshivish- tznious is not about attracting men. Its about being able to build an inner beauty that creates an atmosphere where one can trhive in their yiddishkeit. I grew up quite modern and for me tznious was not enforced once I learned halachos of tznious and was able to sloely take on each different part of tznious, I was able to recognize the beauty of it coming from the complete opposite. I feel more beautiful than I ever have cuz I know I’m making my neshama more beautiful. I baruch Hashem don’t feel self concious with he need to dress in a way thst will grab others attention.
That’s not to say thst dressing tznious means u dress like a shlub. On the contrary I dress like hashems princess and put myself together.
November 8, 2013 6:20 am at 6:20 am #987618frumnotyeshivishParticipantYatzmich – No you can’t! Making blanket denigrating comments about the “typical” yeshivish person is bad. If you have nasty comments about your own hygiene, I wouldn’t object as much.
keepitcoming – bchukosehem lo selechu is followed just as much by the not in style people: a. the style is just an older goyishe style; b. there are many goyim who don’t care about style. What must follow is that jews must care about style? Also, fyi goyim eat and breathe. stop doing that. R’ Moshe has a tshuva explaining what bchukoseihem means. It doesn’t cover denim. Denim is strong, cheap, and comfortable material. It sounds like a very informed person who dresses in such clothing.
November 8, 2013 1:04 pm at 1:04 pm #987619popa_bar_abbaParticipantIt’s chukas hatziyonim, because working people wear denim.
November 8, 2013 3:14 pm at 3:14 pm #987621streekgeekParticipantBack to the OP – I too have always heard many people claim that men think differently then women. Do men really have different eyes then women? Or is it just another way that society tries to control women?
November 8, 2013 3:29 pm at 3:29 pm #987622popa_bar_abbaParticipantstreetgeek: Do you think men and women think similarly regarding anything else in the world? So why would you think it is the same for this?
November 8, 2013 3:42 pm at 3:42 pm #987623🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantThe scary part is, the younger generation of women are growing up with this, and they’re thinking it’s normal.
I’d give this comment a standing ovation
November 8, 2013 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm #987624gavra_at_workParticipantIt’s chukas hatziyonim, because working people wear denim.
Which is why real Beni Torah don’t wear ties.
November 8, 2013 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm #987626streekgeekParticipant@PBA – I know that men and women are wired differently, but to what extent? I’ve heard people say really odd things of why we shouldn’t dress in specific ways cuz of men’s thoughts, and things just don’t add up! Are men from a totally different species??
November 8, 2013 5:09 pm at 5:09 pm #987627popa_bar_abbaParticipantNo, men were here first. We are the ones made from Earth (literally). You women are the ones from venus.
November 8, 2013 5:19 pm at 5:19 pm #987628streekgeekParticipantHey! Venus isn’t too far. And I love how men always take something that could have potentially been an insult and change it around completely. It has always impressed me.
November 8, 2013 5:39 pm at 5:39 pm #987629WIYMemberpopa_bar_abba
According to the Medrash Adam was created androgynous or as a sort of siamese twin with her on his back. (Ever since then men have been telling their wives “get off my back.” Hosafas atzmi.)
November 8, 2013 5:59 pm at 5:59 pm #987630popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’m a man. You heard it from me.
Do you expect your brother or a guy you met to admit to it?
November 8, 2013 6:38 pm at 6:38 pm #987631🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantperhaps a man; I guess it’s no longer a perhaps…
November 8, 2013 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm #987632suproneMemberwritersoul: Notice that keepitcoming pointed out that it has to be so “in all positions”. Is that still the case?
November 8, 2013 6:41 pm at 6:41 pm #987633fkellyMemberStreetgeek- I’ve heard it from my dad and brother.
November 8, 2013 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm #987634suproneMemberfrumnotyeshivish: What Yatzmich described of short and tight definitely IS a violation.
November 8, 2013 7:09 pm at 7:09 pm #987635writersoulParticipantsuprone: I think so. Nobody’s told me differently, and my mom’s pretty makpid.
November 8, 2013 7:44 pm at 7:44 pm #987636WIYMemberWritersoul
Its not about inches. The point is that if when you are sitting and the skirt rides up and doesnt cover your whole knee the skirt is too short. For most girls it may be 4 inches, for some it may be more for some it may be less.
November 10, 2013 1:52 am at 1:52 am #987637writersoulParticipantWIY: Oh, I know that. The point was that someone mentioned 4 inches like it was mideoraisa, which doesn’t make sense.
November 10, 2013 1:53 am at 1:53 am #987638streekgeekParticipantOK, I know you guys run differently, but how different could that be already?!?! We are told don’t do this cuz men think that, and don’t wear this cuz it makes men think about this… If you would hear what we women are told about you, you would probably be ashamed.
November 10, 2013 2:58 am at 2:58 am #987639WIYMemberstreekgeek
If we were so similar that would be boring and pointless. Besides, how would marriage counselors make a living?
November 10, 2013 11:37 am at 11:37 am #987640RedlegParticipantLadies, the people and and sem teachers who are telling you how men think don’t, themselves, have a clue how men think. To hear them, and some of the posters here, tell it men apparently think of little else. I’m surprised that men remember to eat. The fact is that the great majority of men don’t have “evil thoughts” when they see women going about their business. You all just dress and behave in a way that conforms to normative halacha and don’t worry about what men may be thinking.
November 11, 2013 3:32 pm at 3:32 pm #987643streekgeekParticipantExactly my point Redleg…Society (or dare I say, our teachers) trying to control us 🙁
November 11, 2013 5:22 pm at 5:22 pm #987644WIYMemberRedleg
Men have an instantaneous mental reaction to a woman they find attractive. Its not by choice. Hashem created us this way. You are a woman so you can’t understand. I guess its the same way we can never really understand some womens need to dress in a way that cheapens them.
November 11, 2013 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm #987645miritchkaMemberBottom line is women should dress according to halacha and use their heads too…
