What do you call your father? Tatti, Abba, or Daddy?

And if it is “Tatti”, when does it become “Ta”? (Or if it is “Daddy”, when is it “Dad”?)

    Daddy

What I don’t get is why is it abba and not imma?

my father was Totti, until my baby sister learned to speak. then he became “daddy”. so now he’s Dad, Daddy and Totti.

Totti, but somehow Mommy became, Ma. Chayav, I assume he means the yiddish of father = Futter.

Here is what I dont get. Mommy is English which seems to be the pretty excepted style…Yet Tatty is in the Yiddish vernacular. I suppose the reason is because in Yiddish Mom is Momma which is really close to Mommy, so there. But Tatta is not too close to Dad so it didn’t switch to the English Daddy as did the Mommy.

Although Tatta and Dadda and Tatty and Daddy aint too far off, I guess it kinda strayed to far from its Yiddish roots kinda thing.

I’m not sure why though, Abba is more common than Imma. You have some families that call their dad Abba yet they call their Mom Mommy not Imma. Kind of confusing. Although others call Mother Mommy (English) and father Totty (Yiddish) so I guess cross naming is kind of come standard in some homes.

When I was young I called him “daddy” like all the other american kids. When I was in HS we started calling him Tatty because we started listening more closely to what my mother was saying and she wasn’t saying “daddy” she was saying “tatty” or more so “de tatta hut gezugt”. So we got smarter in our older years. Then of course he became “Zeidy” which he preferred above all else 🙂

My kids call us Mom and Dad.

That makes sense, since their names are Wilma, George, and Walter.

    🙂

i feel like a tatti only works with all girls. i just don’t see a boy calling tatti………..

FTR, that’s not their names… no more than my wife’s name is really Eeees. In fact, my kids don’t have secular names at all (other than their last names).

Feel like the only one who says daddy here lol! Never said dad, hardly ever da either. Definitely not tatty and never abba.

its abba and ema in my house! i think this is the best because those dont have to change as kids get older. They are both pretty neutral. Also i always felt ma and ta had a negative connotation especially with teens. And totty always bothered me, and mommy i feel is kinda babyish so i would stick with ema and abba.

“i feel like a tatti only works with all girls. i just don’t see a boy calling tatti………..”

Yeah which is why when my brothers got older they changed Mommy/Totty to Mom and Dad. Some of us still do Ma and Ta, though.

My father is Dad, my shver (to me) is Pop.

My kids call me Abba, although in attempts at humor they will sometimes call me Poppa or Tatty.

I actually overheard some (American goyish) kids at the airport not long ago calling their parents “Father” and “Mother”!

My wife and I looked at each other.

It was like something from Charles Dickens!

We – are Abba and Eema.

    #779806

I have an Abba and a Ma who is sometimes called Mommy.

    I am a Tatty.

My father A’H always addressed his mother in the 3rd person. ?? ???? Although he did not expect it from us. Why? I guess pragmatism. We were growing up in 20th century USA.

also stop naming your kids after non-kosher animals like dov bear or wolf

So, I guess Ze’ev, Ari/Aryeh, Dov, Huldah and Devorah are all forbidden names according to you?

..stop teaching your children corrupt german

    OK. I’ll start to stop.

btw Anything wrong with Yiddish. Been spoken and sanctified by yidden for the past (I don’t know how many) years.

And what’s this about naming a kid after a non-kosher animal? The only name I’d give a kid is gidy. Anyways a tip from Poppy:

Several years ago, I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard my co-worker refer to her mother-in-law as “Mrs. ‘Smith’. I thoughr that was little too formal for my liking. Can’t say I have ever heard any Yidden do that.
