Correct—- but what’s weird is I was only thinking of one of those (the king of Moav). The other one I was thinking of was Shaul almost killing Yonatan (albeit against his will) for eating honey on a fast day.
Who was Shalum ben Tikvah?
January 11, 2012 6:44 pm at 6:44 pm #1159849sam4321ParticipantHusband of Chulda
January 12, 2012 7:29 am at 7:29 am #1159850longarekelMemberWe are all familiar with Shmuel Hanavi. Who else in tanach has the name shmuel? Who are the two people with the name shaul besides Shaul Hamelech? How many people in the torah have the name Chanoch? What are Shlomo Hamelech’s other names(he has four others mentioned in tanach)? And now a hard one: What shevet was the navi Hoshea from?
January 12, 2012 7:14 pm at 7:14 pm #1159851sam4321ParticipantShlomo,yedidiah,koheles and R’ Yehoshua Ben Levi added agur,yakeh,lemuel,and itiel.
January 12, 2012 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm #1159852sam4321ParticipantHoshea was from Reuvien.Just like Reuvien was first to repent so too Hoshea will be the first to urge bnei Yisrael to do tshuva.
January 12, 2012 7:22 pm at 7:22 pm #1159853writersoulParticipantShlomo
Yedidya
Kohelet
Lemuel (I’m pretty sure)
Is there another one in Tanach? I know of others but I don’t think they’re in Tanach.
January 12, 2012 7:23 pm at 7:23 pm #1159854sam4321ParticipantWhat tribe did the prophet Yehshayahu(Isaiah) come from?
January 12, 2012 9:09 pm at 9:09 pm #1159855sam4321ParticipantSaul of Rechovot (bereishis 36:37)
January 12, 2012 9:20 pm at 9:20 pm #1159856sam4321ParticipantChanoch- Kayin son,Noach’s Great grandfather,Reuvein’s son,son of Midian
January 13, 2012 4:42 am at 4:42 am #1159857longarekelMemberYeshayahu was from Yehudah. His father Amotz was King Amatzia’s brother. So here’s another question: who else in tanach has the name Amatzia? I’m still waiting for the other Shmuel. Here’s another question(hard): Who was Chavakuk’s mother(she is mentioned in tanach, though not where one would think)?
January 13, 2012 5:13 am at 5:13 am #1159858sam4321ParticipantShumanite woman story with Elisha. Who was his father, and was he a kohen levi or yisroel?
January 13, 2012 8:24 pm at 8:24 pm #1159859writersoulParticipantA kohen of the egel in beit el— in Amos
I just helped someone study Amos for their midterm!
January 16, 2012 3:00 am at 3:00 am #1159860writersoulParticipantI meant Amotz, just to clarify.
Come on, we need to wake this thread up a bit!
Who was Yehudis? (bearing in mind, of course, that this is a TANACH trivia thread…)
January 16, 2012 4:36 am at 4:36 am #1159861sam4321ParticipantDaughter of Yochanan Kohen Gadol.
January 16, 2012 8:29 am at 8:29 am #1159862longarekelMemberShmuel is found in Parshas Masei. The Yehudis of Tanach is one of Esav’s wives. Here’s another 2 questions: 1)What do Yirmiya, Tzefania, and Chulda have in common? 2)What do Noach, Daniel, and Iyov have in common?
January 16, 2012 7:03 pm at 7:03 pm #1159863writersoulParticipantSam2: GOTCHA!!!
2sense: correct!
Yirmiyah, Tzefanya and Chuldah were the major neviim in the time of the Churban Bayit Rishon. Yirmiyah spoke in the marketplace, Tzefanya prophesied in the beit medrash, and Chuldah taught from her home by Shaar Chuldah.
Thanks for giving me a review for my navi midterm in two days!
January 16, 2012 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm #1159864sam4321ParticipantWriter: Indeed you did,I was thinking the story of Yehudis is not in kesuvim rather in antioachis, gave it a try anyways even though it seemed to easy.
January 16, 2012 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #1159865writersoulParticipantSorry about that, Sam! That sounded kind of… infantile of me.
What are alternate names to each of the chamisha chumshei torah?
January 16, 2012 7:26 pm at 7:26 pm #1159866longarekelMemberWritersoul: Hatzlacha on your midterm. Here’s another two questions:1) What was Daniel’s babylonian name? 2)What was Tzidkiyahu’s original name?
January 16, 2012 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #1159867sam4321ParticipantOut of the 10 plauges who brought which ones, and for how long did each makka last for?
January 16, 2012 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm #1159868writersoulParticipant2sense: thanks!
Tzidkiyahu was Shalom, I believe, and Daniel was Balteshatzar.
January 16, 2012 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #1159869longarekelMemberTzidkiyahu was Matania. Here’s another: Who was the king of Yehuda when the Aseres Hashvatim went into galus?
January 16, 2012 8:16 pm at 8:16 pm #1159870sam4321Participantwriter: were you referring to Mechilta, sifri, sifra and mechilta l’sefer devarim?
2sense: At which point, the galus happened in intervals?
January 16, 2012 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #1159871chassidishY.U.typeMemberSam:Please tell us who Chavakuk’s father was.Thanks
January 17, 2012 12:02 am at 12:02 am #1159872sam4321ParticipantI am not 100% sure on this, but I would say Ido based on a Pirkei D’Reb Eliezer who says Shunamite was the wife of Ido.
January 17, 2012 12:16 am at 12:16 am #1159873writersoulParticipant2sense:What could I have been thinking of? I just checked and what I said makes no sense whatsoever. Oh well.
Sam and 2sense: During all of the stages, Chizkiyahu was king.
Sam: not those, the alternate names. One, as mentioned above (by Menashe) is Torat Kohanim for Vayikra. If there’s more than one for a sefer say both.
January 17, 2012 6:39 am at 6:39 am #1159874sam4321ParticipantBereishis = Sefer Hayashor(gemara AZ 25)
Shemos = Chumash Sheini(Behag)or Sefer Hageula(Ramban)
Vayikra = Sefer Cohanim
Bamidbar = Chumash Hapekudim
Devarim = Mishneh Torah

January 17, 2012 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #1159875writersoulParticipantSam: Correct!
How many Jews were there at the counting in Parshat Naso? In Parshat Pinchas?
January 18, 2012 12:12 am at 12:12 am #1159876sam4321ParticipantI think you meant parshas bamidbar,bamidbar = 603,550, leviem = 22,000. In pinchas = 601,730, leviem = 23,000.
January 18, 2012 1:28 am at 1:28 am #1159877sam4321ParticipantRe-post:Out of the 10 makkos who brought which ones, and for how long did each makka last for?
January 18, 2012 9:14 am at 9:14 am #1159878longarekelMemberAharon brought the first three, Hashem brought the next two, Moshe brought the next four, Hashem brought the last. (Aharon helped in the initial stage of sh’chin). Each makka lasted a quarter of a month(Rashi shmos 8 25), with the exception of choshech which lasted three days according to a simple reading of shmos 11 22-23, or six days according to Rashi there. (It could be the last day happened at the yam suf, see shmos 14 20). Noach, Daniel and Iyov are all mentioned in the same pasuk(Yechezkel 14- 14and20). Yes, there actually is such a pasuk. See commentators there for explanation. Now, another few questions: 1)What shevet was Ovadia from? 2)Which were the three main Arei Miklat in Eretz Yisrael proper(not eiver hayarden)? 3)Why couldn’t David Hamelech himself build the Bais Hamikdash? 4)(hard)Which people in tanach were a nazir(besides shimshon)?
January 18, 2012 7:22 pm at 7:22 pm #1159879writersoulParticipantsam4321: Correct- and yes, as you probably have been able to tell my brain is fried. Midterms will do that to a person.
longarekel: I like your new screen name! 1) He was a ger from Edom 3) because if he had built it, it could not have been destroyed— we would have been destroyed instead if we deserved a punishment 4) Shmuel was a nazir
January 18, 2012 8:12 pm at 8:12 pm #1159880sam4321ParticipantLongarekel: I was thinking of Shemos Rabbah regarding the makkos
Chevron B’Yehuda, Shecehm B’Har Ephraim, Kadesh B’Har Naftali
January 19, 2012 11:22 am at 11:22 am #1159881longarekelMemberwritersoul: Thanks! You have good taste. The reason given in tanach is that David was Ish Damim-involved with wars and killed many people. Therefore the Bais Hamikdash which lengthens people’s lives could not be built by David(similar to not using metal on the mizbeach, and in fact no metal was heard in the building of the entire bais hamikdash). Avshalom too was a nazir. sam: Please elaborate on Shemos Rabbah. Here’s another 2 questions: What was Nechemia’s job in the palace? Who was the last kohen gadol of the bayis rishon?
January 19, 2012 3:00 pm at 3:00 pm #1159882Shticky GuyParticipantLongarekel: the rashi that says each makka was a quarter of a month is not in shemos 8, 25 but in shemos 7,25 which is based on that pasuk that says 7 days.
NEW QUESTION: From where do we know that one getting married should check out the kalla’s brothers? You must bring a source! (Clue: Its not Lavan – unless you find a source. I couldnt find the source with lavan but found the source someplace else).
January 19, 2012 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm #1159883BaalHaboozeParticipantit says Aharon married BatSheva the brother of Nachshon(ben Aminodov. So the question is, why mention her brother? Answer is because one should check out what kind of person his Kallah’s brother is before he marries her.
i can’t remember the source, my brain is still sleeping….
January 19, 2012 4:12 pm at 4:12 pm #1159884algorParticipantThe source is the rashi on shmos perek vav posuk 23. This week’s parsha.
My question is how is it possible to read the exact same haftorah two Shabbosos in a row?
January 19, 2012 5:38 pm at 5:38 pm #1159885sternbergerMemberalgor – shabbos chanuka when there are two of them???
okay, now i have one. what are 5 words in a row that start with a “vav” in chumash?
January 19, 2012 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm #1159886longarekelMemberShticky Guy: In my edition of the chumash it is in 8 25. Algor: When Purim Mukafim falls out on shabbos the Mukafim read Pakod Pakaditi for parshas zachor and then again the following shabbos on Purim. Great riddle. Another question: Which foreign country backed the assasination of Gedalya? (My previous two questions are still pending).
January 20, 2012 2:00 am at 2:00 am #1159887writersoulParticipantLongarekel: yes, but that answer is incomplete. The question would still remain, why would he be forbidden from doing a mitzvah because he performed a mitzvah? The answer I gave was the rest of the answer.
BaalHabooze; her name was ELIsheva.
Longarekel: 1) he was the butler/wine taster 3) Amon
Challenge- name all of the shoftim without looking them up. You’re on your honor!
How many years did Moshe live in Midyan?
January 20, 2012 4:49 pm at 4:49 pm #1159888algorParticipantLongarekel: great answer. That is it.
Writersoul: we know them through a song that we learned in school.
January 20, 2012 6:36 pm at 6:36 pm #1159889longarekelMemberSeraya(Ezra’s father)was the last kohen gadol. He was killed by the babylonians. Hashem Yinkom Damo. Another question: Who are the two nevi’im named zecharia?
January 22, 2012 9:16 am at 9:16 am #1159890sam4321ParticipantZecharia Ben Yehoiada,Zecharia Ben Berechiah
January 23, 2012 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #1159891Shticky GuyParticipantLongarekel why in that rashi that we talked about does he say the makka was for a ‘reva chodesh’ when the pasuk says 7 days? Besides being an unusual expression it is not the same, as months have 29 or 30 days so a quarter of that is more than 7 days.
January 23, 2012 9:37 pm at 9:37 pm #1159892sam4321ParticipantShticky Guy: Shemos Rabbah learns 7 days of makka and 24 days of warning or vice versa.
January 23, 2012 10:34 pm at 10:34 pm #1159893MDGParticipant4)(hard)Which people in tanach were a nazir(besides shimshon)?
Avshalom, that’s how he got caught, when his long nazarite hair got tangled in a tree.
January 23, 2012 11:34 pm at 11:34 pm #1159895ToiParticipantMDG- would be a tough but im learning nazir.
How did Yehudah ascertain that tamar was jewish?
January 24, 2012 1:18 am at 1:18 am #1159896Shticky GuyParticipantSam thanx for your answer but my question was if the pasuk says the makka lasted 7 days why does rashi give a different time span saying it lasted for of a quarter of a month which is longer than what the pasuk says.
Also, if it took makkas kinim to force paraoh’s magicians to recognize that it came from Hashem and not kishuf then what was the point of bringing the first two plagues before kinim?
January 24, 2012 3:02 am at 3:02 am #1159897sam4321ParticipantBecause Rashi knew the Medrash I am assuming, and a quarter was the makka and the rest(24 days ) was a warning.
With regard to your second question I think the Medrash Tanchuma answers it. The Medrash says the 10 makkas are equal to the strategy of laying siege on a city(dam = cut water supply, frogs = make loud noise, kinnim = shooting arrows…).
January 24, 2012 12:30 pm at 12:30 pm #1159898Shticky GuyParticipant??? ???? does NOT equal 7 days as a ???? is not 28 days but 29 or 30.
With regard to my second question, ???? I found an answer in a gevaldiger ??? ????? ????? on the ???? by ??? ??? of ???? ?? ???: ?? ???? ?????
??? ???? ?? ?? ??????
I was looking thru the ?????? to find ??? in why ??? ??? is called ?? ??????, and more puzzlingly, what could ???? mean when he writes that ????? ???? ???? ?????? ????? ???? ?? ????? , how on earth does that fit in here by saying ?? ?????? refers to ??? ??? ???
Answer to everything: The ??? ????? says that even though another 3 ???? were coming but this one would be equal to all the PREVIOUS ???? brought so far as they got progressively worse, with ??? ?????? being the worst. This is why it called the current plague ?? ?????? (though according to that logic, every plague was worse than the one preceeding it so every plague could have been referred to as ?? ???????) This explains the order of the ???? and why ?? brought the first two plagues before ?????. Obvoiusly ?? was not as bad as ????? which was not as bad as ????? so it had to be in that order.
And my question why not bring ????? first to show that even ?? + ????? were not down to ????? but from ??, the ??? ????? continues that ???? was convinced that all the ???? were ????? and not from ?? – even by ????? when his magicians told him ???? ?-????? ??? he just assumed that ??? ????? were even greater magicians and could create something on a level that even his magicians could not achieve. Only by ??? ??? did even he have to admit that it must be from ?? as it was bringing hail and fire down from the heavens. This could only be ???? ????-??.
