    from Daily Halacha:

3502. Ta’anis Esther is a fast day for men and women. The fast day is to remember that Hashem listens when one is in a time of danger and need, as he did at the time of Purim. The fast is also a segulah to prevent the Satan from prosecuting an inadvertent sin done on Purim. Finally, many Mikubalim write that the decree against us from Haman has a potential recurrence each year and the fast day is a defense against the decree. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 686:1, Magid Maysharim par. Vayakhel, S’V Shevet Hakahasi 1:203

On a more elementary level, Esther HaMalka and the rest of Bnei Yisrael fasted for three days before Esther approached Achashverosh and Haman about the feast… since we can’t handle three days of fasting (we are on a significantly lower madreiga than Bnei Yisrael was at at that time), we only fast for one day.

snowbunny- except that was on pesach. They did fast on 13th before fighting in defense. I think this is actually what we are commemorating, but i might be wrong. Its called taanis esther because of the 3 day fast though.

The Mishna Brurah writes that we fast on the 13 because that’s when the Jews went to war and before Jews go to war they fast just like Moshe Rabbeinu. He then explains that the fast is called Taanis Esther because Hashem sees and listens to people who are in distress.See the Aruch Hashulchan for another understanding. Also the Shulchan Aruch brings down some people fast 3 days split up like bhab. The Kaf Hachaim brings a diff reason why we fast see it inside very interesting reason.

sam4321 – that’s very nice for the jews at the time. but why establish it as a fast day today – we’re not going to war today!?

UMMMM… Excuse me?!?!? We are fighting many wars at this time.

    1. Our Yetzer Hara

    2. The media war.

    3. For the right to circumcise our sons.

    4. For people to stop drinking so much on Purim.

    5. We had operation piller of defence, and Iran is threatening to seek revenge against Israel because of attacks that Israel might not have even done.

    6. Unfortunately, there is a Civil war in Syria, and the U.S. is considering intervening, meaning that could turn into world war three. Other countries are considering intervening as well.

    If not now, then when?
