I know I should ask a doctor but I just want to know what you guys think. So yesterday my throat was hurting a little. Now, today, I woke up and my throat was hurting more and I had a slight fever and I felt weak and my muscles were a bit achy. What do you think it is and should I take anti-biotics.

It might be virel and could go away in a day or two but it could also be strept so why dont you just go for a troat culture to check it out.

    I’d rather self diagnose.

you really should take a throat culture. its not good to take meds if you dont need them. pple are just trying to help. unless someone can look at your tonsils and see white spots on them, you should go to the doc.

You should always go to the doctor. They know much more than you. Read the story about a guy who died from a toothache last week.

    tro11 -“I’d rather self diagnose.”

Hey – me and you have something in common -I also like to self- diagnose. But then again, I went to school for years and I diagnose others also.

This is the way I would self- diagnose if my throat hurts. I’d take out my strep kit and do a rapid test, if I have one. If I don’t have one handy, I’d go to the Doc or one of these ladys in town who do rapid Strep tests. If I decided to go to the Doc, he has the option of doing a rapid test and/or a throat culture.

If either turned out positive for Strep, I’d start taking antibiotics. If it was negative, I wouldn’t take antibiotics because taking unnecessary medication can be harmful.

Hey health are you a doctor? Can I get a rapid test myself and just shove it in to my throat?

“What do you think it is and should I take anti-biotics.”

    MODS

    =====

My opinion is that one should first figure out what the problem is before considering taking antibiotics. Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can make the body more resistant and less effective in future rounds of those antibiotics.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this opinion IMHO.

But there was something definitely wrong in the OP’s response.

And look whose comment was pulled and which vitriolic posts remain? Really?

Troll- is this the first time you got a throat ache? You’re making it seem as though you are going through some major crisis which youve never experienced before.

Tro11 – I keep my profession private here in the CR.

Sure you can. But it works like this, you buy from a middle man, not the company. These wholesalers sell by the box. So you have to buy at least a box. So the cheapest box of rapid Strep A tests that I found are over $50. Some cost over a $100. And if it’s positive, where will you get the antibiotics from?

In case anyone is curious, I have a Palm Treo phone. One time I was connecting it to my GPS via bluetooth, and I missed the “e” so on my GPS my phone name is Tro. So that kinda stuck.

A fever plus sore throat and muscle aches, warrants a call to the doc. You might have the flu (yes, it IS around). Feel better soon.

tro11; Not being an MD myself. But having experienced similar symptoms + low grade fever. And I got progressively more thirsty and nauseous. Ibuprofen helped to relieve the symptoms for about Four Hours. When those symptoms persisted I went to the emergency room, where all kinds of tests were taken that came back Negative. I was sent home, only to return the next day. Same situation. When I went back the Third time, a CAT Scan was ordered, which showed that I have, what Doctors call a “Spinal Abscess”. All of the above was the easy part. How to treat the situation was the difficult part. With differing opinions by different doctors. B”H, I got cured after a 3-week hospital stay.

Lesson learned. Do not self-diagnose (If you’re not an MD.) or call friends. Go to a Doctor!!!

Tro11 -“but if i put one down my throat and its positive then i could go to the doctor.”

Sure you could, but why spend at least $50 on the kit?

You said you have insurance -so that should cover going to the Doc, getting tested and any medications you might need. I see no reason to buy kits unless you have nothing to do with your money. And what happens if the Strep is negative, are you going to buy a Mono kit to see if that’s what’s causing the sore throat? You see we learn in school signs and symptoms of diseases, so we don’t have to test everything out there. So you might have a cold virus or a Strep throat or it could be Mono or other more rare causes. So sometimes it’s better to check things out by a medical practioner than “self- diagnose”!
