Swine Flu has been spreading. In the Frum communities, it could be very dangerous. We are often in tightly-packed shuls and schools. The kids are in schools and closely around kids many more hours of the day then the goyim. Bachurim are in dormitories.
How are the sleep-away camps going to open with this virus spreading?
What will happen if all the yeshivos have to close down until this flu stops?
May 24, 2009 3:49 am at 3:49 am #656909kapustaParticipantThis can be avoided if people would be careful about hand washing (with soap), a word that is virtually unknown to some.
May 24, 2009 3:53 am at 3:53 am #656910ambushParticipantstatistics show that more people have died this year from the REGULAR flu, than from swine flu…
do what you regularly do and be extra careful to wash hands and not cough on your hands

May 25, 2009 2:24 am at 2:24 am #656927HealthParticipantWhat are you worrying about? Do you go to those yeshivos?
May 25, 2009 2:32 am at 2:32 am #656928kapustaParticipantbeliever, I heard (rumor) prospect said anyone with a child in any of the closed schools shouldnt send their child.
May 25, 2009 2:38 am at 2:38 am #656929mazal77ParticipantI don’t understand that, if some with a sibling in the affected schools shouldn’t go to school. What if someone was by their cousin home or a neighbors, or even in Shul together. I don’t think closing the schools will contain an outbreak unless, every school is closed.
May 25, 2009 3:22 am at 3:22 am #656931kapustaParticipantmazal, eventually, every school probably will be closed. I think more of a worry are preschools, babysitters, playgroups, and places with toddlers. Everything goes in the mouth, and there is very little hand washing.
May 25, 2009 3:30 am at 3:30 am #656932HealthParticipantTo ames,
What aspect does he think is overblown? The aspect that 200 patients think they are infected or the medical community’s response to it? Why does he think that is crazy for schools to close -does he want this to be a full pandemic? When he went to Downstate -didn’t he have to take epidimeology 101? And why did MMC just fire 3 PA’s if their doctor’s can’t handle the work load? Everyone else is grabbing up PA’s and they fired them. I’m not friends with these PA’s but I heard about it from my friends in PA school.
May 25, 2009 3:44 am at 3:44 am #656933JaxMemberi feel it’s pretty scary when it hits so close to home! it’s not just the public school that are in the news closing, it’s the schools we send the kids to!

May 25, 2009 8:17 pm at 8:17 pm #656938HealthParticipantTo ames,
I personally don’t know what schools do. I can tell you that administrators usually base decisions on a few factors namely – Dept. of Health regs., what they think their parents and community wants, and if they have a school physician -they might ask his/her’s opinion.
May 26, 2009 12:22 am at 12:22 am #656939JaxMemberHaQer: wow very personal question there! i wonder how it slipped through mod clearance!
shaatra: thanx for clearing that one up!
May 26, 2009 12:29 am at 12:29 am #656940ambushParticipantif a few kids had strep- which can be far more serious, would schools close?
They would probably do what they’ve been doing for the past 100 years, send the kid home, antibiotics…
close school?
for bird flu, maybe
May 26, 2009 2:34 am at 2:34 am #656941HealthParticipantTo ambush,
When you know so little about diseases, why would you comment? How do you know strep is more serious? How do you know how strep is spread? Do you even know why they give antibiotics for strep throat? What is the difference between swine flu and bird flu?
You don’t have to be in the medical field to comment, but at least go to a reputable medical web site and see what they say before you do.
May 26, 2009 4:49 am at 4:49 am #656942yankdownunderMemberHealth- Is swine flu classified as a pandemic, how can the general population protect themselves from being infected? Is the risk factor the same for everyone, or are some people more vulnerable? How can people protect themselves, so they will not be carriers? Moderators why are there two approved threads about Swine Flu, why not combine the two into one thread?
May 26, 2009 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #656943squeakParticipantMs. Health, please relax. No one is ignoring teh swine flu. We just feel, as most people do, that too much coverage and hype is being given to what is clearly just another disease. Every couple of years the medical community/WHO/CDC unveils another “apocalypse” pandemic to frighten us (remember avian flu and SARS, to name a couple of recent ones). Really it’s just about their job security. Because, really, what good do they do besides naming new diseases? It’s still the doctors who give care and do the patient research.
What was the big deal about MMC letting 3 PA’s go if they are in such high demand? I’m sure that these friends of your friends who go to school and work in MMC will be able to get “grabbed up” by some other hospital.
Can you please answer me why you are so interested in hyping this up? It’s not about awareness, because I think you can see we all know about teh swine flu. So what makes it personal to you, other than the PA’s?
May 26, 2009 4:17 pm at 4:17 pm #656944HealthParticipantTo yankdownunder,
Acc. to WHO- swine flu is a pandemic level 5. The CDC doesn’t know yet enough about this virus to say if any part of the population is more susceptible than others like they do with seasonal flu. What you read on news sites about weak & debilitated being more susceptible isn’t necessarily true. As far as the other questions -go to the CDC web site and you’ll find the answers. It’s too much info -for me to get into here.
To Squeak,
First of all- I’m a Rabbi to you (no ms.) -not even a Mister- I’m sure you’re just a typical am haaretz. Second of all, you’re the one that should relax- you’re so nervous you’re writing teh instead of THE. I don’t know why you’re saying I hyped this up- where in any of my posts do you find any hype? Also, I don’t own any web sites, so I didn’t decide swine flu was newsworthy -they did. All I did was answer commentors who I felt were not saying truthful comments. Also, my comment about MMC was directed toward someone else’s comment about his doctor having to see 200 patients in MMC who thought they had the flu. I was saying that he shouldn’t complain about his workload since his hospital thinks they have too many employees and just fired 3 PA’s. I personally wouldn’t work for MMC – I think the administration there are all a bunch of typical liberal Jews.
May 26, 2009 8:07 pm at 8:07 pm #656945squeakParticipantSadly, your pedantry in this case does you no good. “Teh” is an accepted Internet word, which I used intentionally and appropriately.
May 27, 2009 3:37 am at 3:37 am #656947JaxMemberwith Bais yaakov of Boro Park shut down, that’s like the whole Boro Park Population has off! wow!
May 27, 2009 4:08 am at 4:08 am #656948May 27, 2009 9:24 am at 9:24 am #656949nonni_devoraMemberTy Health for your insight…I’ve been posting the cdc.gov addy around every place I can manage it.
To all in here who are unaware of this fact:
People who have compromised immune systems; diabetics, people with heart valve replacements, people who have recently had any type of pneumonia, cardiac cath patients, etc. are at great risk from exposure to this flu.
If ignorance is truly bliss; we’d have a lot of very happy Frummies walking around.
Please stop giving out advice to people to NOT see a doctor. It is very important to remember that not everyone is as healthy as [you] may be.
Think of your fellow Jews who are not as healthy.
As for all these parents who are killing themselves because their kids are home for an extra day; I don’t get it? What is so horrible about having your own child at home for a day? I would rather have my child at home and not have the child exposed to something like flu, no matter if it’s swine, goat, camel, or pigeon! Who cares!
Good Yom Tov & Shabbos, have a happy safe and healthy one!
May 27, 2009 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #656950mazal77ParticipantI think this whole swine flu issue is really overblown. Healthy people are always getting sick and B’H they recover. Really those who should be concerned are people with underlying health issues. Trust me, I should be concerned because, my husband has underlying health issues but I am not panicking. I was just at the doctor today with my kids and I asked him about how do they confirm the swine flu and he said there is no exact test for the swine flu, they test for other forms of flu.
So basically, I feel that the numbers for the for swine flu are really higher then what health officals are telling us because not everyone is seeing a doctor and not everyone. The 4 people in New York who died all had underlying health issues.
My school is requiring anyone who even so much as skips a day of school to bring a doctors note on Sunday that they are healthy. I find that ridiculos. In that cause, ALL students should be required to bring in a doctors note that they are healthy.

I didn’t know this word till now. It’s an internet slang, not part of the english language. Why use slang on this site?
To n-devorah,
You’re obviously not part of the medical community, so you didn’t understand what I wrote. You (and others) should educate yourself by going to these sites- CDC.gov- the pages on H1N1 flu, not on seasonal flu. Also, PandemicFlu.gov and WHO.int.

I hope you were kidding!
May 31, 2009 3:55 pm at 3:55 pm #656959HealthParticipantTo Aussie,
No, I’m not!
To Ames,
No to both, but I’m in the medical field. Also, any doctor can post any comment he wants on my posts and I’ll discuss it with him. Anybody can post here, as long as you register with YWN. You aren’t your doctor’s spokesman.
As far as your last question- it’s possible, but there’s no guarantee. It depends on what the antigenic shift is. So let everyone expose themselves just in case. The CDC calls this “flu parties” and they recommend against this because even this flu has caused fatalities in people. They say since we don’t know who will die from this flu (even though it’s a small percentage), even young people without other illnesses should not expose themselves on purpose.
June 1, 2009 12:10 am at 12:10 am #656961BemusedParticipantHi Health,
Just a note to advise you to relax :). Telling another poster that “you’re obviously not part of the medical community so you didn’t understand what I wrote” is a trifle condescending, don’t you think? (Your toss to Squeak of “that’s Rabbi to you, you’re probably an am ha’aretz” was also a bit strange in an anonymous forum- perhaps Squeak is your Rosh Yeshiva? 🙂 Ya never know…)
It’s wonderful that you’re in school to become a PA; our physician’s and communities can certainly benefit from additional Physician’s Assistants. Nevertheless, your knowledge might possibly not trump that of some posters’ doctors, so a little restraint in making definite, “no room for argument” assertions might be helpful all around :).
Meanwhile, my free suggestion is for everyone to follow their physician’s recommendations, and practice good hand washing techniques!
June 1, 2009 2:25 am at 2:25 am #656962HealthParticipantTo Bemused,
The reason I answered Squeak the way I did was because he basically called me a woman. As far as my knowledge trumping any physician, I don’t know any doctor who responded to any of my posts. I don’t think they would disagree but if someone in the medical community doesn’t agree with everything I wrote, they are entitled to their opinion. All the people who commented on my posts only said what their doctor told them. They might mean well, but everyone heard of the game “telephone”.
June 1, 2009 2:28 am at 2:28 am #656963BemusedParticipantHealth,
And being called a woman is…some type of insult?
June 1, 2009 2:39 am at 2:39 am #656964BemusedParticipantHealth,
And being called a woman is…some type of insult? That is too volatile a subject for me to address :). So you felt that telling someone you could be his Rabbi, and that he is probably and am ha’aretz, is an appropriate comeback to being called a woman. Hmmm.
Furthermore, I think you insult the intelligence, not to mention memory, of fellow posters by categorizing their doctor’s communications with them as possible products of “playing telephone”. These were first hand comments, not usually subject to the “telephone game”.
I really don’t think you mean it, Health, but in one thread you managed to insult one poster by snootily tossing “you are obviously not part of the medical community and therefore didn’t understand” shot, another by labeling as “am ha’aretz”, some others by questioning their comprehension and retention of first hand communication by their physician, not to mention all the women on this forum who have just been informed that “being called a woman” is worthy of hurling insults in the other direction :).
Oy.
June 1, 2009 2:40 am at 2:40 am #656965HealthParticipantTo Bemused,
I’m not a mind reader, but from the tone of his post it seemed that he marginalized my comments by associating me as a female. Why don’t you ask him -why he posted the way he did?
June 1, 2009 2:59 am at 2:59 am #656966BemusedParticipantHealth, I think the ball is in your court to apologize for your insults. That would be the graceful thing to do, and a great learning experience for future interaction with patients.
I’ve had to do it too on occasion, and I’m still smiling :).
June 1, 2009 3:15 am at 3:15 am #656967HealthParticipantBemused -I don’t think I need to apologize, but I did try to expain to you my reactions. Also my comment about not being in the medical community- granted was partially an insult, but mainly I didn’t want to get into a debate about it because to explain what I wrote at that time would have taken a large chunk of time. As far as “playing telephone” even if they heard it firsthand, you have to know the context in which it was said. But I welcome anybody in the medical community who disagrees with anything I wrote to please comment and I will try to answer them.
