A new procedure will soon be approved that uses a laser to turn your eyes blue. Is this complete geneivas daas, or is this the same thing as bariatric surgery or a nose job, both of which were approved already?

    #1088422

why would it be geneivas daas? its not like they’re contacts which make your eyes appear a different color than they actually are…in this case they’re actually blue now for real.

whether someone who will make a shidduch decision based on eye color needs help desperately…well thats another story.

REALLY? I never heard of this. But a person could also wear blue contact lenses for the same effect. I can’t see the difference between this or any other cosmetic procedure that is done to make a person feel (s)he looks better. Anyone who only goes out with someone because of his/her eye color, though, is kind of shallow IMO.

the procedure costs a few thousand dollars and is not covered by any insurance- there are better ways to spend that money- maybe give it to tzedakah if he is your bashert eye color willnot matter. you have to be crazy to play around with something as delicate as your eyes if it is not medically necessary

This issue is not so pashut. The tzitz eliezer said it was assur and in fact said it is an insult to Hashem (see gemara taanis 20).Even if you want to say that elective surgery is mutar that was a case where it was nec for a shidduchim.Still every case is diff and just to do it for fun it doesn’t seem like there is someone to be somech on.

    #1088431

Such narishkeitin and shtus! Be happy and thankful for what you have, not what you don’t have.

Years ago, while in an elevator in the building that i worked in, someone commented that she dyed her hair blonde because she thought she would have more fun and it really did not help! It happens to be that in our family many of us are blonde or blonde shades with blue eyes and we ourselve B”H don’t focus on it.

i for one will make sure to spread this to my family that no one should end up with a fake person and heartache!

Why would someone take a chance with surgery on their eyes? That is just too scary! The risk of losing one’s eyesight vs the benefit of having blue eyes is a pretty stupid risk. Surgery is surgery and it should never be taken lightly. Every surgery has risks. Taking a risk to change eye color is foolish.

Eyes are too precious to play around with!!!

In Hebrew as a term of love one can call someone” my eyes” aynayim sheli -it means you are my everything.

If someone is worried about appearances for shidduchim, then makeup lessons, advice on wardrobe and weight control are all relevant, but surgery to change one’s eyecolour? All eyes are beautiful in different ways, think of beautiful people not all are blue eyed, variety etc makes life fun.

beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Some people beleive brown eyes are more beautiful than blue. (I think it’s the Italians who always say a dirty blond haired + brown eyes are the perfect set.) Anyhow, MOST people think blue is the nicest. Personally, I like only a certain shade of blue. But I know many people with blue eyes that aren’t so nice looking, and I know many brown/green eyed people who are BEAUTIFUL. So, unless someone is OB with blue eyes, i really don’t see this becoming a very popular procedure that people would be spending their hard-earned money on.

I dont think that it is Genaivas Daas,

since it IS Blue, whats the difference between blue from birth or not?

i cant imagine voluntarily walking into a hospital for that.

my eyes change from dark hazel to blue within a few days sometimes.

Maybe the person wants his kids to have blue eyes and since this person he’s dating doesn’t genetically have blue eyes then his kids won’t. It’s a stretch, but I could see cases where G’neivas Da’as is involved.

    #1088439

2cebts, if u were addressing me, the entire post was sarcastic. Including my physical description. I was saying ppl are putting too much emphasis on the physical.

It sure is g’navias daas, because some unwitting prospect will think he is getting an upper-crust, blue-eyed, royalty-mannered shidduch, when in reality, he is getting a plain shlepper (and quite possibly, a Galiztianer to boot).

Now, if we were talking about blue eyes AND blonde hair, that would be a game changer. That way, you’d get the sechel of a brunette, and the <edited> of a Norse in one neat package.

Why in the world would it be geneivas da’as?

I can hear what Sam2 is saying, but that would be a question of mekach ta’us, not geneivas da’as.

Blue eyes sound better than a blue mood.

Perhaps they can come up with a surgery to change that as well…

    #1088444

    -taking a break

that got me thinking. NASI should change their game changer to raise the price not just based on age but other factors as well. Should a 27 year old with blue eyes be the same price as a 27 year old with brown eyes? After all the shadchan needs to work harder for the brown eyed girl, right? Or should a 30 year old who sometimes wear flats be equal to a 30 year old who doesn’t? That makes no sense! All these things need to be considered to get a final price…including plastic vs real tablecloths, stacking dishes in the dining room vs in the kitchen, salmon vs gefilte fish etc…the resulting price list needs to be compiled by competent actuaries and should be no less complex than the tax code.

(taking a break’s sarcasm dripped into this post. I am NOT serious).

“I can’t see the difference between this or any other cosmetic procedure that is done to make a person feel (s)he looks better.”

It may be mutter for a “she”, but most certainly not for a “he”.

Also, bariatric surgeries and nose jobs may be beneficial health wise, while other cosmetic procedures are not.

” now i’m gonna have an even harder time shidduch. “

TAB – We would be willing to work around all the things you list, EXCEPT for the flats.

4″ heels may not be the most comfortable thing to wear, but c’mon..where is your mesiras nefesh?

Get a pair of Manolo Blahniks and give us a call.

” salmon vs gefilte fish “

CB, When did THIS make it ito the mix? From time to time, we serve salmon on friday night. is this an asset or a liability?

And do we score more or less points, depending on how its prepared?

    #1088448

LOL bpt. i think i’m gonna keep my flats. i just spent about 8 hours on my feet today running literally the entire time. and malanos are not in my student budget. 🙂

    #1088449

bpt it depends if you’re a half full or half empty kinda guy. “from time to time” is better than never but not as good as always.

speaking of half full vs half empty, I hope no one who’s fully empty up there will take me seriously and make fish choices an important issue. Uh Oh.

Ha! That was a trick question. Had you said, “ok, I’ll run out out and buy a pair”, we would drop you like a hot potato.

Now that we know you’re one of us, we can get to work, hazel eyes and all.

    ” on what exactly????? “

On making the shidduch process as easy as it should be.

In fact, you took the first step already. When asked to conform to some ridiculous social “must” (like 4″ heels) you said no.

Being yourself is a major step in finding someone who is suitable for you as you really are. Not as “they” want you to be.

    See how easy it is?

    “Am I a “PLAIN SHLEPPER?”

To the crowd that puts a premium on blue eyes, sad to say, most likely.

But to the rest of us, you’re just fine as you are.

Wanna know the scary part? Not to far back in our history, someone else put a premium on blue eyes. Now, we’re doing it ourselves?

    Vey, have we fallen.

    #1088458

bpt, i dont conform to most social “musts”. for example, i rarely dress as though i am going to a funeral. jewel tones are way more up my ally. and of course its easy! whats easier than being yourself? why waste the brain power to be a faker? its totally not worth it.

“i rarely dress as though i am going to a funeral”

That’s one way of putting it. And its one of the funniest sights, when you go to a mass gathering of frum women, that 95% of them are dressed in black.

I never did figure that out.

Color and beauty in this case are almost unrelated.
