I keep seeing comments, like oops my boss might be coming in now – Why do people think they are allowed to surf the internet while collecting a paycheck?
FYI, I noted on another <oops..wait a minute> thread, I don’t have a job. Maybe that’s why.
I work in a very liberal place…I often surf while on the phone with customers/suppliers…It does not affect my work and it’s done in full openness with my boss…If your company has a policy against it and you do it, don’t be upset if you get fired for it….
If they wanted to stop you they could put blockers in. Since they did not, they obviously do not care.
My boss knows I am on & doesn’t mind.
I work in telemarketing for a large financial institution. While I am on the phone I usually surf the web. It occurred to me that many times when you call a technical support center, or any call center for that matter (such as a bank) the typing on the keyboard you hear in the backround is not necessarily them looking up your information, rather they are updating their Facebook page or chatting with their friends. I know because I do this.
guy- lol! that makes so much sense.. iv been wondering what on earth they need to type so quickly when im on the phone with them..
i work in a store/office that is usually quiet. there r some days that no customers come in and the phone barely rings.. i cant imagine my boss expects me to sit in front of a computer for six hours a day and not use it…

Does your company put RFID tags on all the office supplies and RFID scanners at all the entrances? Obviously they don’t care if you take them for home use.

koillel101: There are many offices which block social networking sites and the like to reduce down-time. If your company didn’t chances are they don’t mind occasionally as long as you are for the most part fulfilling your tasks and being productive.
I think you should ask your boss if he minds- if he really doesn’t, he’ll tell you so and then you can have a fully clean conscience while doing it.

I’m never really OFF duty except for Shabat and Yom Tov.
I can’t surf while I work. I happen to be working in a warehouse not in a desk job but still (I do have a blackberry). Though now that I think of it, I usually am so busy I can’t even take out my phone to look at a text etc forget responding
