December 9, 2008 5:48 am at 5:48 am #1224872abcd1234Participant
how about having a link to each page on multiple page thread from the coffee room home page?
December 9, 2008 5:58 am at 5:58 am #1224873abcd1234Participantone more if i may, is it possible to have less posts per page like 15 instead of 20 or 30 or whatever it is right now?
December 9, 2008 2:45 pm at 2:45 pm #1224874noitallmrParticipantWhy would you want les posts per page abcd1234? If anything, more…
December 9, 2008 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #1224875brooklyn19Participanthow about if the pages go backwards? like instead of going to page 4 to read the most recent posts, the oldest ones will be on page 4 and the most recent on page 1
December 9, 2008 8:49 pm at 8:49 pm #1224876intellegentMemberI second the time stamp thing. Most of us know how to count so if we want to know how long ago it was we can use our fingers and toes.
brookly19 that is a great idea!
and about the “news room”, good joke! I don’t think anyone is envisioning a posh office on the 14th story in Manhattan! I’m sure it is made up of a couple of desks or dining room tables in some houses in boro park or monsey. In fact maybe only one.
December 9, 2008 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm #1224877JosephParticipantbrooklyn – you can click on the time (hours ago) on the main page of the CR, to go directly to the last page of a thread.
December 9, 2008 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #1224878noitallmrParticipantActually I agree whole heartedly to the closure of some threads. The moderators know excactly what they’re doing and the stuff that is discussed on some threads, leaves only one option- scrap it…It’s a Torsahdik website
December 9, 2008 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #1224879brooklyn19Participantoh cool thanks joseph. i guess i’m not “baki” at this stuff yet
December 9, 2008 9:22 pm at 9:22 pm #1224880notpashutMemberDefinitly MORE POSTS PER PAGE!!
Thanx
December 9, 2008 10:23 pm at 10:23 pm #1224881Pashuteh YidMemberDELETED. Yes, I know that you were trying to be funny.
December 9, 2008 11:14 pm at 11:14 pm #1224882abcd1234Participantre notpashut and noitallmr:
its annoying to have to go down to the last post on a page and sometimes the posts are very long…not vital but a suggestion…
December 9, 2008 11:21 pm at 11:21 pm #1224883JosephParticipantabcd, click on the hours ago under Freshness on the main CR page, and it will take you directly to the last page of the thread AND DIRECTLY to the most recently approved post on that page.
I do agree with those above requesting MORE posts per page. Perhaps unlimited if possible, otherwise 50 or 100.
December 9, 2008 11:25 pm at 11:25 pm #1224884abcd1234Participantthanks Joseph for that little tidbit, learn something new every day!
December 10, 2008 1:15 pm at 1:15 pm #1224885notpashutMemberHey Joseph,
How do you know all this stuff that nobody else knows…….
Hmmmmmmmm…….maybe……. just maybe….. could it be that you’re a……
Whoops, sorry, wrong thread. 🙂
December 10, 2008 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #1224886intellegentMemberJoseph,
thanks!
Never knew that!
abcd1234,
If you click “end” on your keyboard it should take you to the bottom. Or you can hold the little bar by the scroll down on the side of the screen and drag it down. It takes a lot faster than scrolling.
December 10, 2008 3:35 pm at 3:35 pm #1224888smh1Memberthanks Joseph for the help tip! any more?
idea: on the news page, how about going straight to the comments section when you click on “comments”, instead of going to the top of the news article, as it does now.
Hey Editor! do you like our ideas? Can you implement any? please let us know. thanks!
December 10, 2008 10:14 pm at 10:14 pm #1224889smh1MemberJoseph’s tip is great! maybe you could put it at the top of the CR page for everyone to see.
December 11, 2008 12:29 am at 12:29 am #1224890JosephParticipantEditor, Put post #’s, like on the main site, in the Coffee Room. It makes replying easier. (I believe its an option in the bbPress software – posts #’s are visible in the source.)
December 11, 2008 4:00 pm at 4:00 pm #1224892squeakParticipantOr, in lieu of Joseph’s suggestion, I would benefit from a Reply button embedded in a post tag that would copy over the content of the post in blockquote code. I like quoting the person I am replying to. I don’t know if this is available with this forum structure, but asking for it should be OK (even if the ans is no).
December 11, 2008 8:05 pm at 8:05 pm #1224893intellegentMemberJoseph,
Oh come one, do you want to be referred to as a number ?
December 11, 2008 8:38 pm at 8:38 pm #1224894charlie brownMemberintellegent,
referring to you by number would end the intelligent/intellegent debate. What would people argue about then? 🙂
December 11, 2008 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm #1224895noitallmrParticipantMuch prefer the “reply to post” idea then numbers because that means scrolling up to the number to see his post.
December 11, 2008 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #1224896JosephParticipantSo which coders are volunteering to implement all this?
December 11, 2008 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #1224897intellegentMembercharlie brown- EXACTLY!
December 11, 2008 9:31 pm at 9:31 pm #1224898myshadowMemberlol the YWN office has dial up? oy that’s why it takes a while to be updated! but otherwise great job luv the site! 🙂
December 11, 2008 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #1224899brooklyn19Participantthink of it like this: there a million pesukim and maamre chazal that tell us the reward for a specific mitzva. it’s not a secret. if someone only honors his parents so that he’ll live a long life, it’s not lishma – but he still did the mitzva. “mitoch she’lo lishma, bah lishma”
December 11, 2008 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm #1224900charlie brownMemberyou mean there’s something that’s faster than dial up????
😉
December 11, 2008 10:17 pm at 10:17 pm #1224901brooklyn19Participantwow how’d that last post of mine end up here?!?! sorry – ignore it!
December 11, 2008 10:18 pm at 10:18 pm #1224902charlie brownMemberbrooklyn,
was that supposed to be on some other thread or am I missing something here?
December 12, 2008 1:50 am at 1:50 am #1224903dont have internetMemberywn- i have one thing to say WOW ever since u put 40 threads on the page ywn cr has been more popular then ever -it goes back just 23 hours —its lol very stressful lol to go and catch up on everything i missed during the day because im just going on now–and u lately do a fine job updating bec when i go on -recently every day not before 8 pm for the first time that day and im trying to catch up on the day and it keeps updating in the middle so i have to figure out what i read and what i didnt read(dont worry its a good thing lol)
December 14, 2008 2:56 am at 2:56 am #1224904chaimssParticipantGetting to the most recent page is nice, but if my last visit only covered the first few pages? Clicking on the link should take you to where you last looked. I know many boards have that feature. Also, a PM system (or an e-mail member button) would be nice so that there would be a private place to take things instead of everything being fought out on the boards themselves.
December 14, 2008 4:49 am at 4:49 am #1224905brooklyn19Participantchaim
big fat no-no. nothing’s private in the coffee room!
December 14, 2008 4:14 pm at 4:14 pm #1224906intellegentMemberI think you should never allow people to post their emails and the like. As far as I recall, one of the “dangers of the internet” is the possibility of hooking up with anonymous people. Why would you want to help create such a situation?
December 14, 2008 4:20 pm at 4:20 pm #1224907brooklyn19Participantintell – personal messages would still be moderated so that wouldn’t happen. but i think it’s unnecessary. no reason for private talk. if it’s goog enough for one person it should be good enough for everyone to read.
it would also start talk between genders. even just shmoozing is not great. besides, they’d need a lot more moderators, no?
December 14, 2008 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm #1224908JosephParticipantNow that we have some threads working their way to 500 posts and being over 10 pages long to scroll through, its time to have at least 100 posts per thread.
December 14, 2008 7:36 pm at 7:36 pm #1224909I can only tryMemberBefore I actually make my suggestion / request for an improvement, let me just say that I realize it would entail work and an acceptance of responsibility that may not be reasonable or practicable.
Suggestion:
There have been several times that I wanted to send a response to a post to one person only. This was for a variety of reasons including:
b) The other poster made a mistake in quoting a sefer, rav, halocha, etc. that it would have been embarrassing to have publicly pointed out, but that the person would want corrected in a bitzina manner.
c) I had cautionary information that I feel would be helpful to a poster, but care must be taken that it is relayed in a mutar manner (and not be oiver loshon horo). In such cases you can let the teller know that the info will be viewed by three people who know who I am, and possibly require that the teller or someone on your side verifies that it is truly permitted.
e) The subject of an unreasonable attack can be told that the attacker may not have a rational perspective about an issue, so not to take it personally or bother responding. In such a case it would be better not to let the attacker know that such info is being given.
Thank you.
December 14, 2008 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #1224911lmParticipantYWN IS DOING A GREAT JOB! STATEMENTS ARE FIT TO PRINT YESHIVISH & TOIRAHDIG. MY PROBLEM IS THE SMALL PRINT WHICH IS HARD TO READ, I TRIED ENLARGING THE TEXT BUT DOES NOT APPLY HERE. PLEASE HELP. THANKS
December 14, 2008 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #1224912brooklyn19ParticipantICOT – wow. really good reasons. i didn’t think of any of them.
December 14, 2008 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #1224913DocParticipantPersonally, I think the moderators should reject about 60% of the comments that make it to the board.
December 14, 2008 9:17 pm at 9:17 pm #1224914oomisParticipantNo “flaming” allowed. One can disagree without being disagreeable. Calling someone an apikores or the like, is really insulting, and should not be permitted. Likewise, calling someone a stupid fanatic (don’t know if anyone did that, but I want to be fair-minded).
December 14, 2008 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm #1224915brooklyn19ParticipantDoc just don’t you become a mod
December 14, 2008 9:34 pm at 9:34 pm #1224916notpashutMemberbrooklyn,
There is actually something you didn’t think of?
WOW! lol
December 14, 2008 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm #1224917chaimssParticipantI was just thinking, even if they can’t actually go through each post and really comment to the guy why it was deleted, perhaps just an automated message being sent to the poster when his comment’s been deleted/edited. Because it’s quite possible that the person keeps reposting because they’re not sure whether it was deleted or just didn’t make it in.
December 14, 2008 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm #1224918jewishfeminist02Memberlm, look under the “View” menu at the top of the page; there should be an option to make text bigger or smaller. On my Mac, the keystroke combination is Command and the plus sign, though I’m sure it’s different for other computers.
December 14, 2008 10:50 pm at 10:50 pm #1224919I can only tryMemberbrooklyn19-
Thank you.
It’s not that I thought of them, but that I actually experienced at least a few of those situations.
December 14, 2008 11:11 pm at 11:11 pm #1224920chaimssParticipantOh, and another thing on that same note, maybe an automatic e-mail when you’re post’s approved.
December 15, 2008 12:02 am at 12:02 am #1224921lmParticipantThank you, JFem, I did that but the text on YWN did not change only in all other windows.
December 15, 2008 12:04 am at 12:04 am #1224922brooklyn19Participantnotpashut (i’m starting to like your name!)
i just try to be modest sometimes. i can’t let everyone know that i ALWAYS know EVERYTHING even though it’s almost true… i’m working on my middos!
December 15, 2008 1:05 am at 1:05 am #1224923Will HillParticipantEditor, which of these wonderful ideas are you considering? 🙂
December 15, 2008 2:47 am at 2:47 am #1224924mw13ParticipantIm, if you are using Morzilla Firfox, hold down the Ctrl button on your keyboard while scrolling down with the scroll wheel on your mouse. This will make the text on all open Firefox windows bigger, and you can keep doing it until you like the text size.
