How about after every thread is about to go off the most recent list, there should be a final answer to the OP question, like the most popular answer or suggestion should be put in right after the OP question.
January 9, 2011 4:55 am at 4:55 am #1225443Sam l AmMemberThe “Decaffeinated Coffee” forum says it only has 87 topic and only links to 2 pages. But it has more than triple that many topics and many more pages after page 2, with threads that cannot be accessed to since there is no link to it.
January 9, 2011 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #1225445☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhen a post is removed, all post which were in response to the removed post should either be removed, or, better yet, noted as a response to a deleted post.
May 22, 2011 1:30 pm at 1:30 pm #1225446☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe number of posts on the front page of the CR was increased, which is helpful. Is it possible to add a link for older/newer posts, so that a recent discussion which is no longer on the front page can be recalled without having to use the search link?
May 23, 2011 1:26 pm at 1:26 pm #1225447Shticky GuyParticipantGreat idea DY.
Often I see a good thread and either dont have the time right then to post or think of a response later, and if that thread is no longer on the home page and I’m not sure what it was called then I have no way of finding it again.
But if there could be a facility like on the news home page to view the previous archives then this flaw would be eliminated.
Mods efshar takke???
July 12, 2011 12:03 am at 12:03 am #1225448DroidMemberHow can I make more threads appear on the main coffee room page? They scroll off too fast, and I am losing track of threads that I was trying to follow, but disappeared only a few hours after recent activity. Is there any way to change it from 50 to 100 threads appearing on the main page?
July 12, 2011 1:52 pm at 1:52 pm #1225449adorableParticipantnot that I know of but anyone know why I cant use the search button to search for an old thread?
July 22, 2011 12:26 pm at 12:26 pm #1225450Derech HaMelechMemberIt would be great if there was some way to track which threads I posted in, or track if someone is responding to me. Instead of having to remember which threads I posted in. I am not an elephant.
July 22, 2011 1:40 pm at 1:40 pm #1225451tracht gutMemberIf you click on ur user name you can get all your info there.Where you last posted and if there are any replies..
August 21, 2011 6:24 am at 6:24 am #1225452WIYMemberThis may have been mentioned. I think it would be enjoyable to see how many users are currently logged in, how many are lurking and which names are logged in. Other forums have this. I don’t know if the YW system can be customized to these specifications.
February 22, 2012 7:17 am at 7:17 am #1225453cheftzeMemberCan we get an alert when someone replies to a comment we made? (Is there already somewhere you can check if anyone replied to your comment?)
February 22, 2012 3:50 pm at 3:50 pm #1225454No One Mourns The WickedMembercheftza: Agreed! I have to mentally keep track of all the threads I’ve responded to and check in to see if there has been a reply..
I’m new so I suppose the ‘addiction’ will end soon…

Not always strictly true. When you reply to a post, it takes time for your comment to appear. If its a slow modding day there can be several hours before it is approved and there is often a few posts that go thru on that thread together, all approved at the same time – if this is the case then your profile still shows no replies until the next time posts are approved, even though there could often be replies to earlier posts that you have not seen due to their being approved at the same time as yours. Does that make sense?
February 22, 2012 11:11 pm at 11:11 pm #1225457No One Mourns The WickedMemberThe Goq: Thank You! So Helpful.
February 24, 2012 11:29 am at 11:29 am #1225458cheftzeMemberThank you, Goq. That is a useful way of finding what I asked about (although much less efficient than if an actual alert was made when someone replied.)
July 23, 2012 11:50 pm at 11:50 pm #1225461Doodle-Man™MemberI think there shoulb be a Bump™ button.
July 24, 2012 12:58 pm at 12:58 pm #1225462ChortkovParticipantWe should be able to edit a thread: Once i create a thread, but before the mods have okayed it, there is no way to edit it. Nor can you change the name of the thread. I think there should be!!!
July 24, 2012 1:07 pm at 1:07 pm #1225463SayIDidIt™ParticipantI posted this on the “Mods? Mods?” thread. onegoal and Shticky Guy‘s posts were copied from the same thread:
onegoal
Do you think it would be possible to make it so a user can remove any of his posts at any time regardless of how long it’s been since it was posted.
Shticky Guy
…Onegoal thats an interesting idea but think how weird threads would look with posts missing then subsequent replies to those posts would not make sense. Instead, be aware that once you send a post you have no further control over it (after the edit period elapses) so – mussar haskel – consider what you write carefully before sending it.
Shticky, you are right that threads will look funny, however, MANY threads are already hard to read because Mods deleted posts. I think there should be an [edited] tag to threads that had posts removed so that people will understand why the thread looks so weird.
Also, if onegoal’s idea would be set in place, when one removes his/her post, instead of deleting the entire post it should be replaced by Post Deleted by <User’s Name>. The same should apply when a mod removes a post (Post Deleted by <Mod __>). It should show that the user posted something and it was removed. This way people can see why it doesn’t make sense.
I do like onegoal’s idea!

August 24, 2012 10:31 pm at 10:31 pm #1225468I can only tryMemberWould it be possible to not approve posts that were written on Shabbos?
I realize that there are posters from Eretz Yisroel, Europe, Australia, the U.S. West Coast, etc. (posts from those areas may have been written when it’s Shabbos in NYC but not where they live), but perhaps those could be approved or disallowed based on the IP they are sent from.
It would be too bad if anyone was mechalel Shabbos (accidentally or otherwise) by posting on this site.
August 24, 2012 10:44 pm at 10:44 pm #1225469vochindikMemberI can only try: Have you noticed that happen?
August 25, 2012 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm #1225470Shopping613 🌠ParticipantBtw that would be such a pain for the mods to check everyones IP address
though I do like the idea of a delete and a bump button!
August 26, 2012 10:37 pm at 10:37 pm #1225471SayIDidIt™ParticipantICOT, I don’t think we have to be worried about someone posting on Shabbos C”V. And what about non-Jews? Are they not allowed to post on Shabbos?
SiDi™
August 27, 2012 1:24 am at 1:24 am #1225472I can only tryMemberThere is one recent poster who seems quite self-satisfied with their own total lack of observance.
There is a different poster who comes from a non-observant background and is interested in finding out more about Judaism.
Regardless of my personal opinion of these posters (I’ll just say that I believe significant respect is due the second), my concern is about either of these types of poster writing something here on Shabbos.
“…that would be such a pain for the mods to check everyones IP address“
True. My suggestion / request may not be practical or even feasible. I don’t even know if moderators can see the IP address of posts.
“And what about non-Jews? Are they not allowed to post (here) on Shabbos?“
I’d think that isn’t a problem, but I’ll defer a definitive opinion to those who are more knowledgeable than me.
August 27, 2012 2:15 am at 2:15 am #1225473aurora77ParticipantHello I Can Only Try,
I want to be respectful of Shabbos, so I inquired of the CR Welcome Wagon CEO The Goq regarding the beginning and ending time of the Shabbos that we just had. I inquired because I did not want to post at an inappropriate time, and because I am trying to change my ways that are not observant of Shabbos. I spoke a bit about all of this in The Goq’s welcome wagon thread. I also found a couple websites with exact Shabbos times for my zip code so that I will have this information for future Sabbaths (I don’t know the plural of “Shabbos” yet!).
What I am trying to say is, I understand your concern, and I am dedicated to making respect of Orthodox practices my top priority here.
There is so much I don’t know yet, but I am trying hard. I am embracing all the feedback and suggestions that I am getting.
August 27, 2012 3:44 am at 3:44 am #1225474I can only tryMemberaurora77-
Welcome aboard!
The plural for “Shabbos” is “Shabosim” or “Shabosos” – I’m not sure if one is more correct than the other.
Your efforts to avoid posting on Shabbos are appreciated, and I wish you hatzlocha (success) in finding out more about your background and heritage.
August 27, 2012 3:50 am at 3:50 am #1225475aurora77ParticipantThank you I Can Only Try for your welcome and well wishes! I am very excited 🙂 And each new word I learn with help like yours makes me feel like one more little piece of the puzzle is falling into place.

The correct plural is Shabbosos or Shabbatot. The word Shabbas/Shabbat itself is feminine.

September 16, 2012 1:35 pm at 1:35 pm #1225482WIYMemberTo the decision makers,
I would like to make a recommendation for some improvements to the YWN main site. I noticed that matzav.com features shiurim as well as divrei Torah every erev Shabbos and erev Yom Tov. I consider YWN to be the only true Torahdik news website and therefore I think it would be appropriate that YWN have these features. Im sure many of the readers would appreciate if they could read a nice vort on the parsha or hear a nice vort, or read some inyanim of the coming yom tov. It would truly enhance the Shabbosim and Yomim Tovim of your faithful readers.
Thank you.
Wishing all members of YWN staff a Gut Gebenched Yuhr and a Ksiva Vchasima Tova!
September 20, 2012 6:05 pm at 6:05 pm #1225483RamchasParticipantIt would be great to have a Hashkafa/Halacha Q&A section separate from the CR (i.e: Ask Moses), where users could ask and post answers with ratings (i.e: Yahoo! Answers; Ask.com). As an example:
Question: Why does Rosh Hashana come before Yom Kippur?
Best Answer (ratings): Rosh Hashana is a Day of Judgement for the upcoming year based on our future plans. Once we’re set on a fresh path with clear commitments, we go back and “cleanse” the wrong-doing from the previous year on Yom Kippur.
September 24, 2012 12:32 am at 12:32 am #1225484hudiParticipantHow about a “like” feature for people’s posts in the coffee room (not linked to FB please because some people don’t have it).

October 16, 2012 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm #1225486WiseyParticipantI think YWN CR would do well offering free advertising space to certain tzedakkah organizations. It’s not like that would take up pages or inconvenience it’s readers because the space at the sides is anyways not used.
October 17, 2012 8:30 am at 8:30 am #1225487YW Moderator-42ModeratorWIY: YWN already does that, they have Divrei Torah articles every Friday.
Wisey: that empty space that you see is actually sometimes sold as advertising space for a lot of money. YWN cost money to run, they are a business not a chesed organization. Advertising space is worth a lot of money to them and they sell it when they can. Giving away ad space would destroy the whole business, why would a tzedaka pay money for ads if they can get it for free?
October 17, 2012 8:31 am at 8:31 am #1225488YW Moderator-42ModeratorJust as an aside, that empty space on the sides is only there when viewing the site on a large browser window so is not always there.

October 17, 2012 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm #1225491ZeesKiteParticipantShe’s not a lawyer, (not yet, maybe at her next career) but she sure can (and will) defend me. As she did at all my (previous) numerous escapades.

October 17, 2012 8:34 pm at 8:34 pm #1225493NaysbergMemberMay I suggest that the Coffee Room replace its current forum software package with a more modern, technologically sophisticated, forum software that has standard features such as being able to automatically quote a comment the user is responding to and allows html coding in the body of postings?

When closing a thread like the recent one on evolution can you at least append a few links of similar discussions for the benefit of the newer members. I don’t think purp has been here that long so she doesn’t know its been discussed…
