I need to buy a few air condition units. The ones I currently have take too long to cool off the room and make too much noise.Which brand/model do you suggest I replace them with?
May 30, 2011 1:58 am at 1:58 am #773143Leah222MemberNOT GE!

May 30, 2011 4:02 am at 4:02 am #773148relaxationMemberMy advise, friedrich is one of the best and I believe almost all modals work with a shabbos clock, whatever u do purchase stay away from fridgadaire
May 30, 2011 4:18 am at 4:18 am #773149emlfMemberWe have a Frigidaire. It is a 15000 BTU, which is the highest BTU you can get in a 110 volt unit. Not super quiet, but I don’t have a problem with it. Also, Frigidaire is, I believe, good in terms of service.
Please note: it’s important to make sure that you get the correct BTU for the room you are trying to cool. Room dimensions, as well as type of room (dining, bedroom), as well as floor the room is on (heat rises – attics tend to get HOT) all figure in. Don’t buy an air conditioner blindly – you’ll regret it.
I sold a few air conditioners in my time, so boruch HaShem I remember a few points . . .

May 30, 2011 8:03 pm at 8:03 pm #773151yaakov doeParticipantDoes anyone know which units in the 7000 9000 range have an auto restart after power interuption so they will work with Shabbos clock?
May 30, 2011 8:55 pm at 8:55 pm #773152600 Kilo BearMemberJust keep trying units from the Wal-Mart 14 day gemach until you find the one you want! By the time you’re done trying them summer will be over!
May 30, 2011 9:50 pm at 9:50 pm #773153HealthParticipantYaakov -What do you need that feature for? The Sharp AF 8,000 BTU, Fridgidaire also these BTU have built-in timers. The Fedders models have built in 24 hr. timers, so you don’t need a power interup restart!
May 30, 2011 10:17 pm at 10:17 pm #773154yaakov doeParticipantWe use the Shabbos clocks to turn the units on a few times daily on Shabbos. The built ins don’t allow more than one cycle.
May 31, 2011 2:14 am at 2:14 am #773155BSDMemberThank you everybody for your advice.
I’m considering another option I saw on line. It’s called a split ductless. I can have one condenser(the noisy part that goes outside like by a central unit) and up to four air handlers ( the part that goes inside and blows in the cold air) Since I need 4 units, it comes out not too much more than buying 4 window units. ( if I only needed 1 it would be a considerable difference) It has the air quality and quietness of the central unit and the advantage of a window unit in that you can have some off and some on or all set to different temperatures. It’s cheaper to install than central since there are no ducts. Does anybody have any experience with these?

I did a net search, which you can too. There are models that are 7 day programable which allow 4 on/off cycles per day. There are also many models which have the auto restart. Just be aware the more features a unit has -the more it costs.
May 31, 2011 8:18 am at 8:18 am #773157PosterMemberWhy dont you speak to a professional. Go into AJ Madison or the Buzz and ask their AC Specialist. They have experience with ACs and they would know shabbos modes etc…
May 31, 2011 3:59 pm at 3:59 pm #773158dunnoMemberDoes anyone know where I can get a replacement remote for a Frigidaire A/C?
May 31, 2011 6:24 pm at 6:24 pm #773159PosterMemberCall Frigidaire.

The “split ductless” units you describe are in many yeshivas and shuls.
Why don’t you see one there and decide if you like it?
The advice “emlf” gave is spot-on.
You need to know what your requirements are; room size, sun exposure, under a roof, flat roof, etc. – otherwise it’s like buying clothes without knowing the person’s size or even if it’s for a man or a woman.
