September 17, 2022 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm #2125594rightwriterParticipantYes, Moderator 29, a lot more neutral and positive than the sinas chinam topics you guys approve or post on the site. My topic, contrary to your taste is actually productive and thought provoking to find out the roots and sources for our Jewish customs. Should I have thrown some hate stirring attacks on others minhagim in order to get approved faster?
Ujm, yes how did you guess? Is that the most you can contribute to the topic? Its ok for you not to know everything so we forgive you in advance to not comment in future cases. : )

September 17, 2022 10:27 pm at 10:27 pm #2125630AviraDeArahParticipantThis list is full of arrogance. It’s not our place to decide which half of klal yisroel, which half of rishonim are “right” and which are “wrong”.
In the dead sea scrolls caves, for instance, they found both rashi and rabbeinu tam tefillin.
Eilu v’eilu divrei elokim chaim. Good chazal to acknowledge.
September 17, 2022 11:27 pm at 11:27 pm #2125642rightwriterParticipantAvirah maybe you see it as arrogance because you are self reflecting and projecting it on others. Actually this topic isn’t about who or what is right it’s about minhagim and asking those who practice the minhag this way or that for sources and reasons in order to understand why some have a certain minhag either way. It’s just that this forum has participants who are so negative that they will always try to find the bad in anything and start a contest of who can put downt the other on a more “clever” way. Pathetic.
Syag I’m actually not bullying anyone just stating facts from observation.
September 17, 2022 11:35 pm at 11:35 pm #2125646🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantFacts from observation would be “it took a lot longer than it should have to be approved”
These comments-
“a lot more neutral and positive than the sinas chinam topics you guys approve”
“My topic, contrary to your taste is actually productive”
“Should I have thrown some hate stirring attacks on others minhagim in order to get approved faster?”
Are neither facts nor “observations”And then you complain about other people’s negativity
Self reflect much?September 17, 2022 11:36 pm at 11:36 pm #2125644rightwriterParticipantI heard the kiddush cup with stem is a more recent American minhag. Is there any source to that? That is if anyone actually wants to talk about this topic or just write random things which make you feel so smart and brave. Those who don’t want to participate in this discussion are welcome to leave and not comment. I’m only looking for productive comments that can contribute information not for your silly 5 year old jokes.
September 18, 2022 8:38 am at 8:38 am #2125674rightwriterParticipantSyag nobody asked you. Nothing j said was negative they are facts and patterns that everyone is aware of. Like I said if you can’t contribute to this topic you are more than welcome to not comment. You aren’t coming off as clever or quick witted we’ve seen these boring comments over and over again by everyone. Change the record.
September 18, 2022 8:39 am at 8:39 am #2125675BaltimoreMavenParticipantThere is a syle of kiddush cup with a unique design which is attributed to the Ruzhiner Rebbe but which may date back to the Maggid of Mezeritch. Google “Ruzhin Sterling Silver Kiddush Cup bidspirit”
September 18, 2022 8:45 am at 8:45 am #2125682Sam KleinParticipantChanukah oil use Yes versus candles due to the miracle happening with oil on Chanukah lasting 8 days
Pesach Seder 3 matzos needed halachically and not only for kohein Levi and Yisroel but for all the steps of the Pesach Seder to make it through while the rest of Pesach only 2 at a time for lechem Mishna are needed
Rest on the list I have no opinion on but everyone has their own minhag of what they grew up with their family holding like halachically. Esrog With pitum or without. Open or closed lulav etc…. And the many other examples you mentioned. Sefardim use Sefer Torah standing up while leining from it so do sefardim say selichos for the entire month of Elul including through Yom kippur.
September 18, 2022 8:47 am at 8:47 am #2125700commonsaychelParticipantI heard Pizza on motza is a American minhag, is any source to that?
I heard that a Brisker size slice of kokosh caken is eaten both chasidim and MO, any soucre to that?September 18, 2022 8:49 am at 8:49 am #2125706ymribiatParticipant@ rightwriter Its rather pointless to post a topic in a forum that contains random questions that you could easily research on your own time.
The space is better used as a space for grownups to thoughtfully discuss their opinions about issues of the day.September 18, 2022 10:23 am at 10:23 am #2125749🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantI wasn’t trying to be clever nor pretend to be quick witted. I mistakenly thought that if you realized how stupid it sounds to spew negativity while blaming everyone else for it you would be humbled into changing your tune.

Wasn’t there one way of doing things before the churban? Just asking.
September 18, 2022 11:06 am at 11:06 am #2125788rightwriterParticipantBaltimoremaven, is it the one that looks like an apple with a lid? That’s what Google search shows.
Sam Klein, what about the wax sealing though? Without that there wouldn’t be any usable oil.
Also didn’t the Vilna Gaon hold by only 2 matzohs?
Yes I know everyone has their minhagim regarding lulav etc. More interested in reasons behind them. I’m sure there are many.
September 18, 2022 11:42 am at 11:42 am #2125811Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantRW, in most cases, the best minhag is from your family, unless it was clearly off “minhag shtus”.
Sephardi Torahs seem to be easier to handle and store upright. Also, their minhag is to do hagbah BEFORE the reading, which seems to make a lot of sense: you demonstrate the text to the kahal and then read it. If someone sees the problem, he can point it out beforehand. What is the explanation for the Ashkenazi order?
September 18, 2022 11:44 am at 11:44 am #2125815Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantEsrog – Eastern Europe would often get one esrog per town, according to stories. Would they really refuse it if was a pitom or pitom-less type?
September 18, 2022 11:45 am at 11:45 am #2125805AviraDeArahParticipantRight, you weren’t asking who we pasken like. You were asking who was historically correct, and by extension, who was right and wrong. Beis shamai were “right”, and we will indeed pasken like them when moshiach comes, according to the arizal. Beis hill were also right, and we pasken like them now.
September 18, 2022 12:45 pm at 12:45 pm #2125826Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantRW did not ask “who is right”, he asked “what was original” minhag. That is not the same. You don’t tell your students that Yaakov wore a shtreimel to support a minhag, I hope.

September 18, 2022 6:24 pm at 6:24 pm #2125962Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantwearing a headcover would be one thing. It is mefurash from the Gemora that _married_ men were supposed to wear a sudar (at least Talmidei Chachamim in Bavel).
Some other changes are documented in Gemora. Kesuba was assessed only on real estate. Later on, it was also assessed on movables. This confirms that “original” is not necessarily the “correct” one, especially when there was a beis din ruling to change it.
Days of the week when we do weddings changed a number of times.
September 18, 2022 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm #2125963rightwriterParticipantSyag I think you made your point already, that you are childish and needy for attention. Nobody asked you to join this thread. If you realized im trying to only reply and be in discussion with those who are staying on topic but you are relentlessly asking for attention.
Having said that , yes I think it is much more positive to understand beatiful minhagim of our people and its inspiring once you understand the meaning behind what our own people do from across the spectrum. You can keep being a wise-crack but dont be surprised if you will be ignored. Thanks for understanding 😉

-Correct but was focusing more on minhagim not on Halacha. Obviously many times they are interconnected but they are still 2 separate entities. I mean isnt wearing a Yarmulka just a minhag as well? So im more wondering to see peoples reasons and origins for the way they do things.
“Sephardi Torahs seem to be easier to handle and store upright”
-Well they are easier to store upright because they were made in a way to read upright. It wasnt just made this way to be convenient to store and therefore they decided to read it upright since Ashkenaz style reading would be pretty inconvenient with a Sephardi Torah. From what I understand Sephardi minhag is also to put up Mezuza Vertically and not tilted like the Ashkenaz way. Werent there opinions of putting up Mezuza horizontally before Rashi?
