I know that the issue of starbucks has been discussed here many times. But can someone explain why according to the CRC, if they sell meat sandwiches you shouldn’t drink the coffee, but if they dont have meat you can drink there even though they have other non-kosher food?
March 28, 2011 11:58 pm at 11:58 pm #1113766shlishiMemberthe problem is that starbucks washes the treif meat utensils with the coffee utensils.
March 29, 2011 1:09 am at 1:09 am #1113767tro11MemberI know – but why would they only wash their treif meat utensils with the coffee utensils. What about the utensils from the other meat things they make (danishes, etc.)?
March 29, 2011 1:39 am at 1:39 am #1113768shlishiMemberi dont think the other non-kosher items are prepared in the store. they are likely prepackaged and therefore do not need to be handled with any utensils.
although, if they cut treif pastries with utensils they later wash with the coffee utensils, it may open a whole new can of worms.
March 29, 2011 1:46 am at 1:46 am #1113769popa_bar_abbaParticipantAnd what if they have treif cheese sandwiches?
Or trief yayin nesech?
Or treif ?????
Or ???? ?????
What is the difference if they are meat?
March 29, 2011 1:57 am at 1:57 am #1113770ItcheSrulikMemberpopa: people talk about meat because they know about meat. Now I ask you, what about kosher food that was bought with kodshei bedek habayis b’zman hazeh?

Maybe you mean with food that you declared would be assur???? ???? ????? ???? ????? ????? (nedarim 11b)
I think the OP’s point was that the CRC specifically talked about meat sandwiches which implies that ??? ?????? would be ok.
March 29, 2011 2:38 am at 2:38 am #1113772ItcheSrulikMemberNo, I mean exactly what I said. It’s not exactly a complex shaila given that we pasken that hekdesh is chal today and we can’t touch it.
How does talking about meat sandwiches imply chelev is ok?
March 29, 2011 2:45 am at 2:45 am #1113773popa_bar_abbaParticipantBecause they should just say “treif food” or even “treif sandwiches”.
March 29, 2011 2:50 am at 2:50 am #1113774ItcheSrulikMemberAh. I was thinking if it comes off an animal and it’s edible it’s meat but I see your point.
March 29, 2011 2:56 am at 2:56 am #1113775tro11Memberand indeed there are many Starbucks locations that do not serve hot meat sandwiches. These are generally the Starbucks kiosks
that can be found in airports, department stores, highway rest-stops, supermarkets etc., and at these locations the cRc is able to
recommend any drink made from kosher ingredients (even though some items in those stores are not kosher certified).
This seems to imply that even though there are other items that are not kosher certified, it’s fine. As long as it’s not meat that’s not kosher certified.
November 26, 2015 1:54 am at 1:54 am #1113776JosephParticipantA call to OU and Star-K resulted in both rabbis ruling that one cannot drink coffee from Starbucks that sell nonkosher/meat products.
