Open thread – fire away!
You sports fans are out there, and millions more crawl out of their caves during the playoffs, so let’s discuss this right here in the YWN Coffee Room.
Please, no comments about “sports on YWN”?!
If this thread is approved, then it’s obviously OK, so let’s just keep this to sports talk.
Shikur.

Question: is this going to be a man only thread?
Comment: Negativity will not be tolerated against the Yankees or their fans, it will be tolerated and even encouraged against their opponents.

Royals Defeat Giants
In a stunning upset the lightly regarded Royals defeated the heavily-favored Giants in dramatic fashion.
After being taunted regularly by the Giants leader, the diminutive Royals starter managed to deliver a knockout blow that no one could have seen coming. Although the Giant slugger appeared to have no weaknesses, the Royal hurler managed to find a chink in his armor that he took full advantage of. Before the stunned crowd knew what was happening, the battle was over and the mighty opponent had been decapitated.
This modest young man has shown coolness under fire and a refusal to be rattled that bodes well for in increased leadership role in the future.
Despite his modesty, we who witnessed this epic battle will never forget the stunning upset that occurred today, with the final score: Dovid Hamelech 1, Golyas 0.

October 22, 2009 2:17 am at 2:17 am #922274NY MomMemberAs a mother, I would like to admit that last year, it was my fault that the Yankees did not make it to the post-season. Due to the fact that I have sons who have a healthy interest in baseball, I felt that it would affect their learning due to a lack of sleep, listening to all those late-night games.
So, I did it. I put the whammy on the Yankees last year.
I said, several times, out loud, with the heartfelt words of a mother’s tefillah: “The Yankees should XXXX!” (I won’t say it, but it’s a four letter word meaning “to be defeated”).
But I made a deal with my sons this year. If they would get to sleep at a reasonable hour, even with an important game on the radio, I would refrain from doing so this year. Obviously, they agreed.
So…the Yankees are doing pretty well this year, aren’t they?!
October 22, 2009 2:52 am at 2:52 am #922275NY MomMemberpookie: The Yankees are winning the playoffs, right now. They haven’t made it to the World Series, yet. All they need is to win one more game, and they’re in.

October 22, 2009 3:32 am at 3:32 am #922280JotharMemberI just realized that, as a New Yorker, it is in my economic interest to root for the Yankees to go all the way. It will generate much-needed revenue to help the city and state close massive budget shortfalls.
I feel sick.

October 22, 2009 1:52 pm at 1:52 pm #922283FerdParticipantJayson Werth slammed two homers and drove in four runs while Pedro Feliz and Shane Victorino also connected as the Phillies became the first team to reach back-to-back World Series since the New York Yankees eight years ago.
Andre Ethier, James Loney and Orlando Hudson also homered for the Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park as the teams combined to tie the record of seven home runs in a post-season match.
Right-fielder Werth had headed into the game with only one hit in 14 at-bats, but added three more hits to complete the NLCS with three home runs and six RBI.
It helped Philadelphia become the first team since the Atlanta Braves in 1995-96 to claim two consecutive NL pennants.
The Phillies will begin their bid for a third World Series crown next Wednesday at New York or Los Angeles.
The Yankees lead the Angels 3-1 in the American League Championship Series, which resumes on Thursday night at Angel Stadium. (Telegraph)

As I got older, I greatly reduced my “hoping team x loses” way of thinking – I’m sure there are people who would be quite happy if they win.
I’m not a Chicagoan, but if the Cubs win, I’ll be happy for you.
I see ballplayers as artists.
Although this may seem dumb art manages to find its place in the eye of its beholder.
Good luck – I’d never tease a Cub fan, ever since I learned middos 101, years ago.
October 22, 2009 9:38 pm at 9:38 pm #922295Feif UnParticipantShikur, you really are drunk… Ethier, Loney, and Hudson play for the Dodgers, not the Angels.

October 22, 2009 9:43 pm at 9:43 pm #922296jphoneMemberICOT: I’m sure 101 years of excellent middos have taught you not to say “How did that get through the legs of Leon Durham” or , “how did that ball bounce over the head of Ryne Sandburg a NINE TIME gold glove winner” or even “how did Rick Sutcliff walk Carmelo Martines on 4 pitches”?
October 22, 2009 9:55 pm at 9:55 pm #922297jphoneMemberFor those who are not long suffering Cubs fans or dont enjoy taunting them the references are to things that happened in the 7th of innning of game 5 of the 1984 playoffs between the Cubs and Padres. The winner of the series would have the honor of being the sacrificial lambs for the Detroit Tigers, baseballs best team, by far, that year.
Rick Sutcliff, arguably the best pitcher in the league that year opened the inning with a 3-0 lead. He promptly walked light hitting Carmelo Martinez on 4 pitches. The next batter (maybe 2 batters later?) hit a ground ball right at Leon Durham (this was actually GOOD luck for the cubs, since his range to the right and left was about 6 inches) and the ball went right through his legs. Later in the inning a ground ball bounced right over the head of NINE TIME gold glove second baseman Ryne Sandburg (cubs fans willt ell you it was a bad hop, I guess for the Cubs it was bad). the Padres went on to win the game and ended the hopes and dreams of Cubs fans everywhere.

I didnt know steroids were around in the 1880s/1890s.
I didn’t either, but who am I to doubt Jeff Kent?
“How did that get through the legs of Leon Durham” or , “how did that ball bounce over the head of Ryne Sandburg a NINE TIME gold glove winner” or even “how did Rick Sutcliff walk Carmelo Martines on 4 pitches”?
Either you’ve got a steel-trap memory, or the “Google” button is being put to good use.
The only things I remember from ’84 are the 2-0 (in games) blown lead, and Sutcliff hitting a ball out of the stadium in game 1.
October 22, 2009 11:06 pm at 11:06 pm #922300jphoneMemberICOT. You left out one possibility.
. I have a cousin, a long suffering cubs fan who has repeated these things so many times, i wont be able to forget them, for at least as long as the cubs havent won the world series.

ICOT. Not to go off topic, but this long suffering Cubs fan who laments that game 5, at least twice a week, is also quick to remind me how Charles Smith still cant hit a 3 foor shot, even if you gave him 5 MORE attempts. That is one that us knick fans wont forget for 101 years (the eibishter should grant us arichas yamim) either.

I was never a basketball fan, but I think I remember what you’re talking about.
Wasn’t he fouled on that play?
Didn’t the Knicks get payback a year or two later when they eliminated the Bulls after winning game 5 on a bogus foul call?
