Did anyone here get a speeding ticket? If so how much was it and how many points if any? Was it by a speeding camera or a cop?

    Yes on speeding ticket unfortunately

No points. Could have gotten a point but I went to court and said why I was speeding (Wanted to break my record for time it took to get to the place that I was going) paid like $200 something (judge told me to make better goals for myself in life).

Happened over a decade ago. Dunno the costs of such a ticket today and it must vary by state.

I got a speeding ticket many years ago. I had two choices, either pay the fine, which would have meant points on my license and paying higher insurance rates or going to an educational course for about 8 hours on the dangers of driving recklessly, etc., I’m sure you can imagine what it was about. You should find out if that is an option for you (if you’re going too fast or driving too dangerously, they don’t let). Also find out if there is a company in your area that gives courses either in Sunday or during the week.

I never got a speeding ticket. But a policeman once pointed a gun at me and threatened me for going through a red light. That’s a long story – maybe I’ll tell it later if I have time and if anyone is interested.

Not sure if it is this way everywhere, but in most locations, violations caught by camera without police involvement do not result in points on your license, or get reported to your insurance. Also, if given a police citation for the first time, many jurisdictions allow you to take a remedial driving safety course, which allows you to avoid points on your license, but you still have to pay the fine (unless you contest it and win in court).

Avram, I need to slow down and it is very hard when others are going much faster than you and are speeding around you. If I did get a ticket it was from a camera not the cop his or her self.

b”n, I’ll try to tell the story later when I have time. It’s a long story.

Don’t worry – there’s no l”h. It was in the US, and the policeman was a goy , and he didn’t do anything wrong.

Meno, that is why I started this topic because I was on the free way and all of a sudden I saw flashing and I did not know what it was and so I assumed it was a ticket. How could I tell if it was or was not a ticket?

If it’s a ticket they’ll let you know.

It could’ve been a hundred different things though, no point in worrying about it now.

    Could’ve been lightning.

Could’ve been a random person taking a picture of you.

Could’ve been you taking a picture of a random person.

Could’ve even been a ticket for someone else.

I got my one and only speeding ticket 41 years ago…rushing Mrs. CTL to the hospital to give birth.

The officer was quite nasty, pulled me over, I explained why we were in a rush, he let me go, followed us to the hospital and then after Mrs. CTL was admitted handed me a ticket.

I called the local newspaper and they ran a story on this insensitive policeman. That afternoon, I got a call from the chief of police telling me the ticket had been cancelled.

Youngest daughter got a speeding ticket in NY, near her college, last November. $300 fine. BUT since she has a CT driver’s license there can be no points assessed by NY and they don’t notify the insurance carrier for out of state drivers.

We took her car away for a month and she had to pay the fine from her own earnings.

in NY camera tickets carry no points. Tickets issued by PO in NYC must g to trial, no plea bargaining. Tickets outside of NYC by PO can be plead down , The better your record, the better the deal.

CTL, Most states do share points between states, as they are part of an interstate compact. NY happens to be one of the only states that doesn’t share or give/accept points to/from almost any other state, as NY is not party to the compact.

    Joseph,

I am well aware of this. That is why we never permitted our children to get NY licenses while at school in NY. As long as they come back to CT once every 30 days they can keep cars registered here and use CT driver’s licenses.

In general, NY has an attitude, they don’t like to share <VBG>

Why does this make you prefer a CT license over a NY license? With a NY license you don’t have to worry about getting points almost anywhere outside NY. (As long as you pay the out of state fine, the points won’t stick.)

This is a case where more points means less fun

    Joseph,

Keeping the CT license, registration and address equals far lower insurance premiums (especially when the cars are on my policy and I pay the invoice). No chance of NY points raising the premiums. Not one of the family has ever had a ticket here in CT. (The vanity plates and CT 100 Club Medallions help as well).

How do vanity plates help and what is the 100 club? Have you or family had occasion to utilize them where it avoided a ticket?

Local police recognize vanity plates. In fact some towns provide the police with a list of office holder, board and commission members’ plates. The officers tend to be a bit more lenient with these. It is easier to recognize and remember a vanity plate such as CTL-ESQ (NOT MINE, made up for this post) than a sequence of 8 random numbers and letters.

The CT 100 club was founded about 40 years ago. 100 citizens pledged $100 per year to help support the families of state troopers wounded or killed in the line of duty. The members get a Bronze medallion that mounts on the car. Over the years membership has expanded and the yearly donation has gone up.

Does it support a good cause? Yes

Do officers sometime ignore minor infractions because there family might benefit if tragedy strikes? Possibly

The second is not why I belong. I originally joined after being asked to contribute towards the cost of hearing aids for an elderly police widow who recived a tiny pension. I thought it was a proper cause to support.

The reason that they don’t assess points for camera tickets is that it’s not easy to tell who is driving. At least that’s my understanding of the way it works in NY.
