How much space should a driver leave between himself and the car in front of him?

    Hi iced,

I think I remember from driver’s ed. 19 years ago that, on the highway, it should be at least two car lengths.

When I took my permit test I believe they said 1 car length per 10 mph. For example, 5 car lengths for 50 mph.

according to the NJ drivers manual it is 1 car space per every 10 MPH

For every ten miles per hour of your speed, there should be one car length.

The three second rule: it should take three seconds for your car to get to where the car ahead of you is now, at you current speed. If you are moving slowly you should allow enough space to be able to see the bottom of his wheels.

I know I learned that you should count about a four second difference between you and the car infront of you passing the same sign. 🙂

Does anyone actually keep this law besides for a few grannies on the roads who do it unwittingly?

    Hello iced,

I am not sure about city driving, I am sorry! I think what people have posted here is much better than the smaller amount that I remember learning in Pennsylvania. We are pretty bad drivers down here it would seem!
