December 27, 2011 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm #838730soliekMemberanything non-jewish and youll be fine. i have yet to read a good jewish novel. read richard north patterson…amazing books

December 27, 2011 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm #838732Menachem MelamedParticipantIf you are into reading secular classics – I believe that Jules Verne is one of the few authors whose works are acceptable.
December 27, 2011 6:34 pm at 6:34 pm #838733Queen BeeMemberI agree with soilek, but I’m not going to tell you to read non-Jewish books if you only want to read Jewish books. There are some decent frum novels, though. I can’t think of any right now, sorry. I’ll come back if I do.

i laffed 😀
December 27, 2011 7:49 pm at 7:49 pm #838735kidoMemberDont laugh, soliek, and im not quite interested in secular novels either! What about some good jewish one?
December 27, 2011 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #838736OneOfManyParticipantanything non-jewish and youll be fine.
That assertion is ridiculous. There is plenty of non-Jewish rubbish out there (and I’m not talking non-kosher).
December 27, 2011 8:08 pm at 8:08 pm #838737soliekMember“some good jewish one”
mutually exclusive. which is sad considering that there ARE great jewish writers…they just arent writing novels…
December 27, 2011 8:11 pm at 8:11 pm #838738yitayningwutParticipantLol… OneOfMany, thank you for pointing out that obvious fact.
December 27, 2011 8:25 pm at 8:25 pm #838739soliekMemberim well aware of the fact that there is plenty of non jewish rubbish, but when i said that there are no good jewish novels i meant that there is not a single jewish novel that i have ever read that has blown me away like a richard north patterson book. it just doesnt exist.
December 27, 2011 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #838740OneOfManyParticipantsoliek: I don’t think that’s true. What about Marcus Lehman or Avner Gold? Their works are practically classics. And Etka Gittel Schwartz – newish author, historical fiction? I find her stuff very interesting and engaging.
I get that you think a certain author is matchless. I have a few particular favorites, too (and they aren’t Jewish writers, either). But that doesn’t mean that there CAN’T be any other works worth reading.
December 27, 2011 9:14 pm at 9:14 pm #838741soliekMemberi stand corrected. i forgot about those…yeah avner gold and marcus lehman are fantastic and i really loved their stuff…i was thinking about more recent works like yair weinstock and nachman seltzer which usually makes me gag
December 27, 2011 9:30 pm at 9:30 pm #838742Queen BeeMemberDecember 27, 2011 11:06 pm at 11:06 pm #838743soliekMemberyeah i was out of line…i should have known better.
its just…why cant we get some frum novels that dont follow the template? why must they be yeshivish? why7 cant they just be like regular secular novels without the swearing and the sex…just a story?! i am so sick of international plots involving kolel guys where the novelist uses a deus ex technique to bring in the rosh yeshiva at the last minute to save the day with information he somehow got from shor shenagach es haparah…it IS very frustrating
ive written stuff that had absolutely no swearing in it, no sex, nothing inappropriate aside from certain thematic elements like suicide and no one wanted to touch it because it didnt involve a kolel guy, divrei torah, and an omniscient rosh yeshiva. it makes me want to climb the walls!
December 28, 2011 1:14 am at 1:14 am #838744Queen BeeMembersoliek, exactly! I couldn’t have said it better myself! I have so many really great ideas for frum novels, but I know that editors won’t even touch it once they find out the actual plot. There are so many real, authentic, believable stories to tell that I think will entertain so many frum readers, but publishers just won’t allow it. I think if I ever do want to publish a frum novel, it would have to be through self-publishing. Have you ever thought of doing that? I think it would be great if you wrote a REAL frum novel!
Thanks so much for apologizing and not getting mad at me =).
December 28, 2011 3:49 am at 3:49 am #838745December 28, 2011 3:51 am at 3:51 am #838746OneOfManyParticipantsoliek (and Queen Bee), I have to say, I totally sympathize with you. I think I’ve sampled pretty much all the popular Jewish authors at this point, and they’re definitely getting worse. And I’d love to see anything you two wrote (don’t worry, I’m not so very picky).
P.S. For Kido – two more: Tzippi Caton (b’sheim LuvMe on the other book thread), and Mordechai Shmutter. If you’re interested in some clean secular stuff, let me know! 🙂
December 28, 2011 4:05 am at 4:05 am #838747Sam2ParticipantI have read one amazing Jewish novel: In the Spider’s Web by Chaim Eliav.
December 28, 2011 4:07 am at 4:07 am #8387482facerParticipantKido: if you want really well written books with a non-jewish style try my favorite author; Etka Gittel Schwartz. shes really the best by far and very liberal. she wrote ‘shortchanged’ and shes writing the ‘full harvest’ serial in the binah magazine. its aweswome!
December 28, 2011 4:48 am at 4:48 am #838749zeena.kastaMemberThe most amazing book ive read is called The Coffee Trader by David Liss. It is about a yid Miguel Lienzo (spanish inquisition escapee), but hes not exactly doing the right thing. Like making business partnerships with the dutch which wasnt allowed in the 17th Century. He is put in cherem and in the end is left with nothing and everything. really amazingly written
December 28, 2011 5:40 am at 5:40 am #838750Queen BeeMemberOneOfMany, thanks, that’s really kind of you. I’ll let you know if I get published =).
December 28, 2011 6:23 am at 6:23 am #838751hello5MemberHow bout yair weinstock or Chaim greenbuam
December 28, 2011 3:15 pm at 3:15 pm #838752kidoMemberIve read all of Yair Weinstock’s. they’re all a bunch of nonsense, nothing realistic. They might be somewhat interesting, but nothing really GOOD! i prefer those like Mexico File, Optical Illusions, Lone star and such. Any other?
December 28, 2011 4:14 pm at 4:14 pm #838753soliekMember“Ive read all of Yair Weinstock’s. they’re all a bunch of nonsense,”
!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL OF THAT!!!!!
dont even get me started on that tripe. btw…my biggest problem with many jewish novels is the overuse of deus ex machina
