WIY -You say you’re not pasuling anyone. Of course you are. Just because you say they are wonderful people doesn’t mean you’re not pasuling them. This is the difference between me and you. You say 99.9% of yidden don’t keep this halacha, although B’shogegg, even though they are wonderful people. I, on the other hand, don’t think everyone does aveiros, just that most people don’t have kavana. You can only comprehend that almost everyone doesn’t keep halacha, but you can’t comprehend that maybe most people don’t have kavana.

Lets not make this about the difference between you and I. Saying nobody has Kavana, thats DEFINITELY POSSULING THEM its possuling everyone and saying that we waste our time 3 times a day. You can go to all the shuls and apologize to everyone now…
You would rather say that, than say that people dont know Halacha!!!
However, saying most people are not well versed in Halacha is not Posseling them if its a fact theres no problem with stating the truth.
Im not saying they are Mezidim although if I recall the Chofetz Chaims words correctly, am haaratzis due to never learning a subject is akin to being a Mezid. Not knowing a Halacha doesnt make you a shogege if you are capable of learning it. Today when theres everything in English and any other language theres no excuses left.
Lets do an experiment, go open a shulchon Aruch (not Orach Chaim although it would likely work on that as well) and read off the 2 pages facing you. Now tell me, did you know all of those Halachos? Half? Any? Was there 1 you didnt know?
Well most people who opened it will also not know everything on the page. Its likely because they never opened it before in their lives!
Face the facts, people dont know enough Halacha. You can live in denial, or do something about your own lack of Halachic knowledge.
October 20, 2010 4:38 am at 4:38 am #708643apushatayidParticipantMost shuls have rows of table, shtenders or some other object that serves as a hefsek as far as this halacha is concerned. Most people, in most shuls are not davening shmone esrei in the aisles or otherwise in a place where they impede people from walking around. I think the entire premise of this thread is false and motzi shem ra on yidden in shuls everywhere.
October 20, 2010 7:14 am at 7:14 am #708644WIYMemberApushatayid
Not so simple at all. There are 3 conditions.
1. It is permanently in that place (can’t move, never moves)
2. It is at least as high as the person davening
3. Is at least 4 tefachim wide
Some poskim hold the object must only be 10 tefachim high.
In basically every shul the tables and chairs move besides the table has to be solid from floor moving up 10 tefachim minimum to be mafsik so we still have a problem.
I understand that you feel resistance. When I came across this Halacha a while back I also said that there’s no way. I just didn’t think it was possible, but I was wrong. Its a hard Halacha to do in many shuls, however I must tell you that once you become Makpid about it you will find a way around without walking in front of people davening. It will require paying attention to where you are going and looking around to scan the situation, you will have to calculate how you walk and in some cases have to take the long way and walk behind people instead of in front. Hashem will give you Siyata Dishmaya if you try your best to keep the Halacha, as with other Halachos.
October 20, 2010 8:16 am at 8:16 am #708645haifagirlParticipant100% of shuls? 99% of the kehilla?
Where do you daven? I think I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen someone walk in front of someone davening and still have fingers left over.
October 20, 2010 1:48 pm at 1:48 pm #708646bptParticipantI find it quite amusing to watch the 2 or 3 people in my shul zig-zag thru the tables, like mice in a maze, to avoid the “daled amos” buffer zone, yet the rov of our shul (who is by no means a small fry) relies on the 30″ tall / 12″ wide loophole (or perhaps he knows something the 2-3 frummies don’t) but at any rate, it really irks me to see someone out-frum the rov.
Same appiles for those who wash for shalesh seudos during mincha. If shkiya is such an issue to you, find a shul that supports your derech. (I can assure you, BP has several pre-shkiya shuls, so don’t think these guys are without options. Without sechel, perhaps, but not without options)

I never said davening is a waste of time -you did.
Since when did your observations become a fact -anymore than this Rov’s idea that people don’t have Kavana? Also, you quote the Chofetz Chaim that they are B’maizid and then you claim that you’re not passuling them??!! At least not having Kavana is B’shogeg!
“if its a fact theres no problem with stating the truth.”
Also, since you mentioned the Chofetz Chaim, I’m sure you remember him saying that – LH is even when it’s true and even on a whole group or population!
October 20, 2010 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm #708649cherrybimParticipantWellInformedYid – “Mamer Mordechai: He says the reason for this issur is because you are mevatil his kavanah. This fits well with the view of the Magen Avraham.”
So there are other things that may mevatil someone’s kavanah during the amidah. My pet peeve that disturbs my kavanah is when I’m davining shmoneh esrei and the fellow next to me davins loud enough for me to hear him, or insists on learning aloud while others are davining shmoneh esrei. They want to enhance their kavanah on the backs of others and this is assur.

There are 2 reasons for this Halacha. 1. The Shechina is there its not Kavod to walk there 2. By walking there you distract the person davening.
I know myself that if s/o walks infront of me especially within 2 feet of me its very distracting. Also when people take things off the table that’s immediately in front of you.
I have seen it brought down that someone who talks in shul and thereby distracts others who are davening are guaranteed 100% that their Tefillos WILL NOT BE ANSWERED!!!
I would think similarly, doing anything that will distract anothers Davening will have similar repercussions.
People often wonder (I’m referring to those who actually daven with kavana) why their tefillos don’t get answered. Often, the answer lies in their shul etiquette.

A lot of the things I brought are from Guidelines to Tefillah by Rabbis Elozor Barclay and Rabbi Yitzchok Jaeger.
From looking at the Hebrew sources its clear they went through many Halacha seforim as well as shu”t sfarim including many of the contemporary ones like Rav Shlomo Zalman Aurbach…they put incredible amounts of hasmodah into their sefarim.
The Guidelines Halacha series is a must buy if you want to know definitive Halacha tthat brings all the tzdadim.

People don’t know that you aren’t allowed to daven loud enough for others to hear you. That’s another one that sadly people don’t know. Actually, it says (Siman 101 sif 2 mishna berura sif katan 6) that one who davens loudly apparently doesn’t believe that Hashem can hear a silent prayer, and is following the ways of the false prophets who used to scream to their idols.

You are right maybe I shouldnt have used such a bold title. I accept your critique.
However I have been in many shuls in my life and I see many people not be makpid about this Halacha wherever I have davened and it bothers me that good people are doing this.
October 21, 2010 2:33 pm at 2:33 pm #708663HaLeiViParticipantThe Gemara says already that we don’t have Kavana and the Halacha exists nevertheless. But, I have heard numerous Heteirim through the years. There are stories of Gedolim who stayed out of Shul until everyone finished.
There are a few things involved here. Walking in front is Assur because of Kavana. Passing through or sitting, for a non-Mitzva is a problem all around because of the presence of the Shechina. Perhaps the less Kavana someone has, the less you have have to worry about the first part but the second, albeit less Chamur, problem still exists.
There is a concept in other areas of Halacha that you can’t Assur someone else’s property. I’ve heard this applied to our topic, too. In the isles and even near other places, when the person is sort of stepping into others’ territory, he is giving up or can’t Assur his 4 Ammos.
We can always see Medakdekim being careful about this, but it’s hard to give numbers because most people stay by their place throughout the Tefilla.
October 21, 2010 3:49 pm at 3:49 pm #708664Ben TorahParticipantAlso, let us not forget the related issue to this topic –
it is assur to say Shemoneh Esrei behind a door – effectively blocking people form entering/exiting due to the discussed 4 amos rule.
October 21, 2010 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm #708665HaLeiViParticipantAlso, it is Assur to knock over someone Davening, even if you are already passing through. I think we can all agree on that one.
October 21, 2010 4:47 pm at 4:47 pm #708666HealthParticipantHaleivi -the gemorrah doesn’t say we don’t have Kavana at all. Even nowadays, we might have some Kavana. But the generations get weaker, so maybe the amount of Kavana we have nowadays, is not enough for this Halacha to apply, as opposed to the time of the gemorrah!
October 21, 2010 5:27 pm at 5:27 pm #708667WIYMemberHealth
Than why doesn’t a single sefer say that?!
Besides, you are forgetting there are 2 reasons.
1. You are disturbing the persons Kavana
2. The Shechina is there
So first of all, who says how much Kavana is required for the Shechina to be there? Maybe the littlest bit is enough. Or maybe the Shechina is there automatically when one starts Shemona Esrei Hashem comes to hear our Tefillos, regardless of his Kavana levels. Of course we have a responsibility to have kavana when we daven.
Now on the other reason, the Kavana aspect so even if you will say that we have very little Kavana, we still have some Kavana and therefore it is assur to distract someone because you are ruining whatever Kavana he does have. Basic bein adam lchaveiro here! There’s no heter to distract another person who is davening!
I have seen it brought down in contemporary Halacha seforim that someone who talks in shul and thereby distracts others who are davening are guaranteed 100% that their Tefillos WILL NOT BE ANSWERED!!!
So obviously Halacha values our Kavana.
October 21, 2010 5:37 pm at 5:37 pm #708668HaLeiViParticipantLook, that’s a possible distinction, but not the kind that you make up without a Kasha to answer. I think the ball lies in your Rav’s hands.
Just a thought: Although many of us have a hard time keeping a focus on the meaning of the words, we are still aware of who we are praying to and standing in front of. We still want him to listen, and we say at the end, Yihyu Leratzon Imrei Fi. Therefore there is no reason for the Shechina not to be there. In other words, although you stopped thinking about De’ah, Bina and Haskel, you still think about Baruch Ato Hashem.
But do you agree at least not to knock people over?
October 21, 2010 6:22 pm at 6:22 pm #708669apushatayidParticipantWhat if everyone came to shul on time and stayed by their seat the entire davening.
October 21, 2010 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #708670frumladygitMemberHow about feeding animals on Yom Tov and shabbos? Once on pesach we were enjoying a sit in the park, and a young mother comes along with her brood of children and a bag of whatever, matza crumbs? And the start throwing it to the birds for fun.
How about washing netilas yadim and sitting at your place when you put the challa in your mouth, and actually swallowing a kezias or at least a drop before resuming partcipating in talking?
Or in one house the rebbetzin was washing each and every dish that returned to her kitchen after each course, and faithfully replacing them in the cupboard so everything should be in order, after drying with a towel, as well. As well as wiping the counter tops with a shmatta.
October 21, 2010 11:53 pm at 11:53 pm #708671HealthParticipantWIY -Boy you never give up! You keep repeating your same old argument. I’ll repeat what I wrote before -At a certain level of not proper Kavana, like we have nowadays, this Halacha of not walking in front of them doesn’t apply. Also, at this level, there is no Shechina there. If you want to argue, come up with a reasonable argument.
October 22, 2010 4:26 am at 4:26 am #708672WIYMemberHealth,
The reason I dont give up is because you are distorting Halacha! Im not kidding you, nobody heard of this Heter that you are claiming. Your Rabbi cant make up Heteirim and neither can you just because you dont want to keep Halacha.
I asked your question to gateways ask the Rabbi and this is what came back:
On October 21, 2010 5:18PM submitted the following question to asktherabbi.org
Hi Rabbi , I was discussing the Halacha of not walking 4 Amos in front of one davening Shemona Esrei with someone and the person said a Rov (I don’t know who the Rov is or how competent he is) told him that nowadays its not a problem because people don’t really have Kavana by davening. So he claims that because we don’t have Kavana therefore the Shechina doesn’t come so its no problem. Now I never saw such a Heter in any Halacha sefer so I want your opinion. Is this a valid Heter or a mistake on the part of the Rov who gave the Heter? Thanks
Dear :
I have no idea. I have never heard that idea before. The Halacha seems to be quite clear and I am not familiar with a source in Halacha that says that a lack of Kavanah means that the Halacha is not applicable.
Best regards,
Rabbi

I looked up the Titz Eliezer and the only issue I have is that he doesnt really discuss the part about the Shechina. He refers to some Eishel Avraham but I have no idea where because he doesnt give an exact source.
So I see we have our heter. Either way, I will continue to be makpid on this as much as I can. However it is clear, anyone who davens in a public aisle is a nuisance and one certainly doesnt have to worry about disturbing such a person.

Also, how old is your Rabbi? He’s probably younger than me. He’s definitely younger than the poisek I’m talking about, who’s at least in his seventies.

So here is a guy, who wants to show the world that he won’t walk back into my daled amos even though there is table. So this Tzaddik instead keeps turning around every few seconds to see if I’m done, because he has to get out of there. Even if it wouldn’t be mutter to go back, I’d rather this guy go back anyway; the amount of distraction he does to me is a lot more than if he would go back in my daled amos and then leave. HORAV SHMUEL KAMENETZKY SHLITA TOLD ME THAT IT IS NOT PROPER WHEN HE SAW ME IN THE YESHIVA DOING THIS (WIPING MY GLASSES WITH MY ARBA KANFOS ) ON THE STAIRWAY IN THE YESHIVAOctober 24, 2010 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm #708685Shouldnt be hereMemberyidel1 What did the R”Y tell you? Past nit or Assur?
Was he perhaps referring to one of 2 possibilities
1) pulling out your T”K from under your shirt?
2) running around in the hallways in a T”K only with no shirt?
Somehow I am under the impression that Philly talmidim do not their TKs out

Shouldn’t be Here
I wasn’t asking you to transcribe it. Only to tell me what he said or to give me a link but later I found it online.
You should really chill out.

If you read the Tzitz Eliezer you will see he is looking for a heiter (based on the request of the questioner), in particular for occasions when people are davening in the aisles. He then brings a few reasons why and how a person could be lenient, and concludes that if a person needs to move into the shul to be able to daven properly, and to sit down and learn, it would be permitted for him to walk in front of a person davening, especially if he is in the aisle. In any event, he does not say that “bizman hazeh it is no problem and one can do it”. He would agree that for no good reason, it is certainly forbidden.

When I wrote You ignored my previous referrences I was referring to
WIY It may hard be hard for you to digest but we do not have Kavanah is not so novel If the psokim as far back as the Rosh’s Rebbe say ???? ??? ??????? ?? ?? what would say to our Davening. We gotta do what we gotta do & concentrate but???? ??? ??????? is still a factor in Halacha.I can see a competent Posek use it as a Snif even if it is not the Aruch Hashilchon. You owe Health’s Rav an appology .

October 25, 2010 12:35 am at 12:35 am #708691Shouldnt be hereMemberWIY If you look through my posts you will see that I did not say anything about a general blanket recision of the Halacha. I wrote I can see a competent Posek use it as a “Snif”
I was harping on your seeming obstinance to accept that this could be a factor. Not that the air is cleared can we be Mekayem ??? ??? ????? ?
