I think people who wear both socks and slippers at night are crazy. You should wear one or the other, but not both. If you must have traction, get socks with rubber on the bottom.
April 12, 2013 1:14 am at 1:14 am #945544PaylesherMemberMany have a minhag to never walk in bare socks.
April 12, 2013 1:18 am at 1:18 am #945545Torah613TorahParticipantPaylesher: You’re joking. Why?
April 12, 2013 1:20 am at 1:20 am #945546PaylesherMemberNot at all joking. Don’t know (or remember) the reason. But Rav Miller’s daughter told me that was the minhag in her parents house. It is in my family too.
April 12, 2013 1:21 am at 1:21 am #945547Sam2ParticipantPaylesher: That’s a Minhag without any real Makor. My best possible Limud Z’chus for those Makpid on it is “Al Titosh Toras Imecha”. But it comes close to bordering on Nichush.
April 12, 2013 1:25 am at 1:25 am #945548PaylesherMemberYour lack of knowledge of a mekor does not negate there is a mekor. Especially in light of the fact that it is practiced by gedolim.
April 12, 2013 1:28 am at 1:28 am #945549The Best BubbyParticipantIt is actually written in Shulchan Aruch, that to go in stocking feet is a sign of aveilus. One should wear shoes or slippers. My parents A’H were very makpid on this inyan and so are we.
Wishing all a Gut Shabbos!
April 12, 2013 1:38 am at 1:38 am #945550Torah613TorahParticipantYet another minhag to make sure my future husband doesn’t have.
April 12, 2013 1:46 am at 1:46 am #945551PaylesherMemberThank you, Bubby. I should’ve mentioned that, by us, those whose parents are still alive are makpid about this.
April 12, 2013 1:47 am at 1:47 am #945552Sam2ParticipantThe Best Bubby: It’s in Shulchan Aruch? Where? If it is, I’ll retract my statement. But I’m pretty sure that it’s not.
April 12, 2013 1:52 am at 1:52 am #945553Torah613TorahParticipantLOL, I had no idea that there was such an inyan. Good to know!
April 12, 2013 5:52 am at 5:52 am #945554ben_yehudaParticipantSome people may not want the bacteria stored in their slippers due to sweat to touch bare skin. Similarly, people try to wear socks with shoes.
P.s. ankle socks are actually comfty
April 14, 2013 2:42 am at 2:42 am #945555YW Moderator-42ModeratorIs it tznius to walk around without socks?
On a more serious note, there is an inyan not to walk around in socks due to it being derech aveilus. I have not heard that this only applies to someone with both parents living as was mentioned above (lo shomati ana raaya but I thought I’d mention that as I can hear a svara against it).
April 14, 2013 2:46 am at 2:46 am #945556PaylesherMemberPut aside for a moment tznius, minhagim or even halacha. I think it is tacky to walk around in socks. Why would anyone want to do so?
April 14, 2013 2:36 pm at 2:36 pm #945557Torah613TorahParticipantYW 42: That’s interesting.
Paylesher: Because they can’t find their slippers?
April 14, 2013 3:09 pm at 3:09 pm #945558yetelzMemberTorah, the best bubby wrote the same thing mod42 wrote. and if the reason is that they simply cant find their slippers, whyd you write it is crazy to wear both??
April 14, 2013 10:43 pm at 10:43 pm #945559Torah613TorahParticipantyetelz: Honestly, this was a throwaway question. I had absolutely no inkling that there was such an inyan. What I do at home is irrelevant. I was just bored of hearing about sem, shidduchim, and weight, then weight, shidduchim and shem, then shidduchim, weight and sem all day, night, evening, and last week.
April 15, 2013 2:24 am at 2:24 am #945560🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantThis may be slightly off topic (gasp) but my sister was the type who always put on socks and shoes in the morning and wore them all day. I always walked around barefoot (as in not even socks). When my sister died I was 19 and I had a dream that she came to see me. She told me a bunch of things, and then turned to me as if she was bringing up a topic we often discussed and said, “and by the way, you are supposed to wear socks when you’re sleeping”. I thought it was nonsense but someone close with Reb Moshe ZTZ”L mentioned it to him and he said that actually it wasn’t.
April 15, 2013 2:52 am at 2:52 am #945561yetelzMemberyoure supposed to wear socks when you are sleeping?? i never heard that. based on what and for what reason?
April 15, 2013 2:59 am at 2:59 am #945562🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantHe didn’t say you have to wear socks when you are sleeping, he said I was wrong in thinking it was nonsense. I didn’t get any further info.
April 15, 2013 11:30 am at 11:30 am #945563TheGoqParticipantI consider myself to be very holy or is it just my socks that are that way?
April 15, 2013 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #945564Torah613TorahParticipantSyag: That’s a really spooky story. Very interesting and thank you for posting it.
