noitallmr- Is that “The Easy Way to Quit Smoking?” I think I heard my 20 and 22 year old brothers talking about it recently, (although they both said they’re not reading it right now because they’re not ready to quit yet, hashem yishmor.)
December 19, 2008 4:34 am at 4:34 am #633193noitallmrParticipantYeah Esther1. He has stopped over 6 million people globally from smoking and it is a must-read for any smoker. But obviously it’s only gonna work if you wanna stop but just can’t. If you don’t wanna stop don’t bother with it.
December 19, 2008 1:17 pm at 1:17 pm #633194tzippiMemberBrooklyn 19, most quitters gain some weight. I know a woman who started out petite and put on a few sizes after quitting. Her doctor says she’s still infinitely healthier.
January 13, 2009 2:18 am at 2:18 am #633196syriansephardiMembersmoking is gross. i know someone who quit smoking erev rosh hashana because he said how can i stand in shul and ask Hashem to give me another year of life when im being a hippocrit and kiiling myself from smoking. thats something every smoker should think about
January 13, 2009 5:01 am at 5:01 am #633197anonymisssParticipantSmoking is gross – in your opinion. If people in your circles would typically smoke, you would very likely think otherwise.
January 13, 2009 6:29 am at 6:29 am #633199yankdownunderMemberSmoking is an obnoxious and destructive habit everybody knows this. To condemn and gives words of Mussar do not help motivate a smoker to quit. What may help is to make suggestions such as offering to go with them to a Smoking Cessation Meeting and being their sponsor to help support them, another idea is to go to the local health food store and buy a stick of Licorice Root which may help curb their addiction, and the list goes on.
January 13, 2009 9:50 pm at 9:50 pm #633200syriansephardiMemberanoymisss: ur very wrong
January 14, 2009 12:38 am at 12:38 am #633201gabsMemberfor your info i smoke right now (im in middle of reading allen carrs book on smoking) and just to make a few things clear.one cigarette can “not” get you addicted, it take usually a month or two and it only takes 3 weeks to get the nicotine out of your body even if you smoked 100 cigarettes for a year, and as i saw on one of the pages someone wrote it costs 8 dollars a pack you can get it at 3.50 a pack if you buy it by the carton.also the reason it is wrong to smoke on purim is because once you take that first cigarette you want another one.and another thing ,im a teenager in yeshiva and as far as im concerned most people start out of peer pressure not because they want to be cool.and as far as halacha is concerned to have internet is probrably more against halacha than smoking (i have yeshivanet).as far as drinking i think its ok to drink once a year.its a mitzvah (even if bochurim take it a little over the limit).
January 14, 2009 2:46 am at 2:46 am #633202mchemtobMembermy uncle is a living example of why people shouldnt smoke. the carcinogens from the cigarette smoke have literally killed his eyes to the point where he was being blinded by it…the only way to save his vision was to have a cornia transplant so now he has a new eye and a new view on life . when my kids asked him why one eye is blue and one eye is brown he told them… and now they run around shul telling people if you smoke you’ll have to get an eye from a dead man so you don’t go blind. maybe the cigarette companies should put that on the box. lol!
January 14, 2009 3:28 am at 3:28 am #633203syriansephardiMemberMchemtob: omg hazeet! They’re not gonna put that on the box so they can lose $ lol (even though ppl would buy it anyway)
January 14, 2009 3:30 am at 3:30 am #633204anonymisssParticipantgabs- you have a lot of opinions. Anything else you would like to share with us?
January 14, 2009 3:30 am at 3:30 am #633205brooklyn19Participantsyrian – you gotta cut out the lingo :}
January 14, 2009 3:31 am at 3:31 am #633206syriansephardiMemberAnd gabs- I feel bad for u, ur a teenager who smokes. Doesn’t sound to good. I hope u no that girls DON’T like when men smoke, think about that (but u don’t sound the type to care)
January 14, 2009 3:43 am at 3:43 am #633207oomisParticipantwhen my kids asked him why one eye is blue and one eye is brown he told them..
For the record, it is the IRIS, not the cornea that is the colored part of the eye, so I am not sure what your uncle’s story is. A cornea transplant would not change an eye color. Maybe he has a cataract on the other eye, making it appear a different shade. In any case, DON’T SMOKE – – it’s really bad for you and for everyone around you.
January 14, 2009 4:04 am at 4:04 am #633208syriansephardiMemberBrooklyn: ha why? And btw u deff are syrian! Or close to it!
January 14, 2009 4:09 am at 4:09 am #633209gabsMemberoh ye i made a mistake anonymisss i wrote “100 cigarettes for a year” i meant 100 cigarettes a day for a year.
January 14, 2009 4:47 am at 4:47 am #633210anonymisssParticipantIs that all, gabs?
January 14, 2009 5:02 am at 5:02 am #633211beaconParticipantThis can go in the random q’s thread too but I’ll put it here:
Why is it accepted that frum guys smoke but totally out of the question for girls? What’s the difference?
January 14, 2009 5:19 am at 5:19 am #633214mazal77ParticipantYou’ve just met someone whose Ashkenaz mother of Hungarian/Polish Parents learned to speak fluent Arabic. My mom speaks Yiddish, Hungarian, Hebrew, Arabic, English, & Spanish.
January 14, 2009 5:25 am at 5:25 am #633215oomisParticipantWhy is it accepted that frum guys smoke but totally out of the question for girls? What’s the difference?
Who says it is? I would NEVER allow a shidduch with one of my daughters with a guy who smoked (even a little bit). They would never want a guy who smokes. It is a filthy, smelly, expensive, and health-threatening addiction. which imperils the people who live with a smoker almost as much as it imperils the smoker. That being said, many people view women smoking as being untzniusdig. Man or woman, I am against anyone smoking, at least anywhere near my loved ones or me. By the way, for any woman who does smoke – it ages and wrinkles your skin prematurely, because of the motion you make while taking a repeated puffs, as well as the toxins ingested in the smoke.
January 14, 2009 5:39 am at 5:39 am #633216mazal77Participantmod, u missed my post about Hazeet to Syrian. My above post doesn’t make sense with out it.
January 14, 2009 5:49 am at 5:49 am #633217qwertyuiopMemberthe only addiction i have is the CR addiction. and may it be my worst.
January 14, 2009 5:59 am at 5:59 am #633218mazal77Participantokay, I was merely defining what Hazeet means. What nebbach is in yiddish and what miskein means in Hebrew = Hazeet. Syrian, I understood what it means, but most people here don’t understand SY Lingo, so please explain when you use it.
January 14, 2009 6:06 am at 6:06 am #633219brooklyn19Participantmazal – you are so not half ashkenaz!
January 14, 2009 6:11 am at 6:11 am #633220mazal77ParticipantOh yeah?? I like gefilte fish with a bissel Chrein then I have my Bamia with Rice. Like I said before, I am a half-breed and quite proud of it. so is my hubby.
January 14, 2009 6:19 am at 6:19 am #633221brooklyn19Participantso curious if i know you. mazal – that could be your name. (or it’s an english version – tunie or fortune or michelle…)
you said you have kids. (i assume you’re not 77!!!!)
lol gotta think about this one.
January 14, 2009 6:46 am at 6:46 am #633222asdfghjklParticipantsame here–the only addiction i have is the CR addiction. and may it be my worst. !!!!
January 14, 2009 1:09 pm at 1:09 pm #633223syriansephardiMemberMazal: I totally agree with u that the smoking thing I’d discusting!
And I was telling mchemtob hazeet bc I know he fully understands it but thanks for explaining it to everyone lol
January 14, 2009 2:23 pm at 2:23 pm #633224qawsMemberI heard that a major poseik said that starting to smoke is assur. If you already smoke, then its obviously dangerous but its not assur because you are addicted and its not your fault because the addiction takes over your self control.
January 14, 2009 3:04 pm at 3:04 pm #633225noitallmrParticipant“Why is it accepted that frum guys smoke but totally out of the question for girls? What’s the difference? “
Oh come on you really can’t see a difference? Simply because however disgusting smoking is it’s still a guy’s habit like drinking and is therefore unimaginably nauseous to have a girl drinking or smoking- much more then a boy (don’t get me wrong, I also don’t like boys who smoke or drink…)
January 14, 2009 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #633226mazal77ParticipantBrooklyn19, Pickled herring in cream sauce is pretty good. (Especially, the Honey Mustard pickled Herring by Pomegrante, but this should be in the Fave Food thread) We took the kids a few years back to the Homowack for the weekend. My Eldest son(who was 9 at the time) ordered the pickled herring in cream sauce, the waiters couldn’t believe he ordered and liked it!!!
January 15, 2009 2:24 am at 2:24 am #633228gabsMemberwhy is it worse for girls to smoke? first of all why dont most jewish girls smoke altogether and secondly a girl altogether is looked down on ten times more than a boy that smokes since smoking is more common by boys and as far as im concerned girls smoke cause it makes them look sophisticated whereas boys always smoked to make them look manly so you can understand why there will always be more men that smoke (especially jewish) than woman
January 15, 2009 2:52 am at 2:52 am #633229syriansephardiMembergabs: ur wrong- girls dont smoke bc its sophisticated, they smoke bc they think its cool!! like 30, 40 years ago it was considered sophisticated
January 16, 2009 4:42 am at 4:42 am #633231gabsMemberi hold the reason alot of frum men smoke is because they go through much more stress than a non jewish man/woman
January 16, 2009 5:27 am at 5:27 am #633232beaconParticipantWhat a ridiculous comment, gabs. Sorry
January 16, 2009 5:37 am at 5:37 am #633233moish01Memberyou think less non-jews smoke than jewish ones? no shot at that one.
January 16, 2009 5:42 am at 5:42 am #633234anonymisssParticipantgabs- I think non-jews have plenty of stress in their lives, too. The stress is different than our kind of stress, but it is stress all the same.
~a~
January 16, 2009 2:45 pm at 2:45 pm #633237squeakParticipantgabs – so women have less stress than men, huh? I knew it! Now let me go tell every woman I know how easy her life is….
January 16, 2009 5:29 pm at 5:29 pm #633238areivimzehlazehParticipantnotice how squeak didn’t say “now let me go tell MY WIFE…”. I hereby pronounce squeak an elligable bachelor.
going once, going twice, going three times….
January 16, 2009 6:04 pm at 6:04 pm #633239asdfghjklParticipantareivimzehlazeh: ha got any shudduch ideas for squeak??? maybe curious???
January 16, 2009 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm #633241squeakParticipantnice diyuk, but the loshon I used was typical of me. I am purposely as ambiguous as possible in the CR.
January 16, 2009 7:27 pm at 7:27 pm #633243JosephParticipantAreivim, you make a good observation.
squeak, you come across way too paranoid of life.
January 16, 2009 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm #633244CuriousMemberasdf – I’m overwhelmed by all the suggestions.
January 16, 2009 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #633245gabsMembersorry what i meant to say was the percentages are much more by jewish men
January 17, 2009 11:23 pm at 11:23 pm #633246oomisParticipant“nice diyuk, but the loshon I used was typical of me. I am purposely as ambiguous as possible in the CR”
I have always thought Squeak is female. The comment about telling every woman Squeak knows how easy her life is, is something a woman would say. Frum guys are generally not as sensitive to the tribulations of Jewish women (even when they are very caring guys).
So I vote “Lady Squeak.”
January 17, 2009 11:28 pm at 11:28 pm #633247JosephParticipantCurious, everyone’s trying to help you out…
