Would you rather be the brainy Know-it-all, or the popular type that has a million friends?
February 13, 2011 11:48 pm at 11:48 pm #988724gefenParticipantHard to choose as I am both! Also modest! LOL!
February 14, 2011 12:01 am at 12:01 am #988725ZeesKiteParticipantI’d rather be someone sure of him/her self. What does brains add. What do ‘a million’ friends add.
February 14, 2011 12:06 am at 12:06 am #988726observanteenMemberZeesKite: Huh? What do you mean?
February 14, 2011 12:11 am at 12:11 am #988727s2021MemberThe popular. Brainy know-it-all doesnt necessarily get u too far in life happiness-wise. The person with great social skills, lots of friends… i would imagine would have better quality of life and could get further..

the brainy guy will get a high powered, high paying job, bringing in boatloads of cash. what good will the social skills do?
February 14, 2011 1:02 am at 1:02 am #988729gefenParticipantWhat good is tons of money and no friends? Pretty lonely life, I would think.
February 14, 2011 1:41 am at 1:41 am #988730observanteenMembergefen: true, but, money talks, y’know.
February 14, 2011 1:45 am at 1:45 am #988731wanderingchanaParticipantNeither before MIDDOS!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 14, 2011 5:02 am at 5:02 am #988732s2021Membershlishi- in my opinion the guy with all the street smarts is usually more successfull than the socially awkward braniac..
February 14, 2011 5:11 am at 5:11 am #988733☕️coffee addictParticipantI would rather be the guy that has a million friends (if it’s just in between these two choices)
with friends it’s a lot easier to network and thereby get a job, whereas brains earns you a degree but if you dont have connections you’re “too qualified for the job”

Agreed. Being able to utilize/maximize our unique abilities Hashem has created us with, is really the right and biggest blessing. We are each unique in our own way.
Billions of people on the world. Yet, no two look exactly alike. So too, says the Gemora, do no two people think alike. I’d understand that, that no two people have exactly the same abilities either.
February 14, 2011 5:23 am at 5:23 am #988735ZeesKiteParticipantobservanteen
What I mean is that ‘a million’ friends is ‘no true’ friends. Better a few TRUSTED friends and a good sense of self-worth. That will get you somewhere. IMHO. Correct me if I’m wrong.
February 14, 2011 11:28 pm at 11:28 pm #988737cocacolaMembercoke, try it again without all-caps
February 14, 2011 11:39 pm at 11:39 pm #988738stamagoyMemberwuld you rather be 8 feet tall or 3 feet tall?
Would you rather be 100 lbs overweight or 100 lbs underweight??
These are irrelevant questions cuz its not up to you!!!!!!
February 15, 2011 12:13 am at 12:13 am #988739doodle jumpParticipantMost definitely smart. Friends come and go. No need to be SO popular. All you need are two or three really close friends. Friends come and go. Family is forever. Smart is the way to go. Does not mean you have to be a nerd. Just smart.
February 15, 2011 7:36 am at 7:36 am #988740mischiefmakerMemberPopularity can make you happy and get what you need (ex. jobs-if you have many friends they might know of one…). Personally, I can’t understand socially awkward geniouses. Obviously, some amount of brains you need but to be a genious…not me. I prefer to spend my night talking on the phone than studying. And for those of you who say friends come and go, so does money.
February 15, 2011 7:46 am at 7:46 am #988741haifagirlParticipantDefinitely smart. But that’s because I am and I can’t imagine what it’s like to be less.
Popular is nice. I’m smart and have a lot of friends.
I’m not sure why people think smart and popular are mutually exclusive.
February 15, 2011 3:08 pm at 3:08 pm #988742ZeesKiteParticipantYosef (not JOSEPH!) daas, Yosef Ma’achov. Doesn’t get you too far. I once heard why ‘Lo LaChachomim Lechem’ – HaShem sais “Youre so smart, let’s see what you could do for yourself”. For someone extremely bright, there’s an additional Nisayon of Emunah. OK. I AM NOT BRIGHT!
February 15, 2011 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #988743bptParticipantI agree with Zeeskeit. I’d rather have a few good friends that are terrific human beings, than have a mailing list with hundreds of “aquaintences”
Smart? And confuse myself with lots of facts? What for?
February 15, 2011 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm #988744guy-ochoMemberpopular because you could use your friends brains. kill two birds with one stone.
February 15, 2011 4:45 pm at 4:45 pm #988745HealthParticipantFor this world, I’d rather have been socially smart than Mr. Brainy. I suffered a lot because I lack Social Smarts. In the next world, who knows? Wait till I get there and then I’ll know!
February 15, 2011 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm #988746ZeesKiteParticipantHealth, I’m with you. Maybe we’ll gain some ‘Social Smarts’ here!
Smile! (suggested, not required)
February 15, 2011 11:53 pm at 11:53 pm #988747cocacolaMemberwell.. since i value friends over test marks.. i would have to go with POPULARITY!! which B”H i have (bli ayin hara) so im good! :)oh yeah.. and im modest too! 😉
February 16, 2011 12:19 am at 12:19 am #988748observanteenMembercocacola: But, brains come in handy. Life’s not always easy and you gotta know how to deal with its ups and downs, no?
February 17, 2011 2:07 am at 2:07 am #988750cocacolaMemberobservanteen: true! but when i wrote popularity over brains.. i was talking about book smart 🙂
February 17, 2011 3:13 am at 3:13 am #988751✡onegoal™ParticipantI happen to be both and it’s great!

February 17, 2011 8:22 am at 8:22 am #988752wanderingchanaParticipantSo, I wonder how someone who’s more popular than smart balances that with the importance of doing mitzvos and learning?
I don’t think it has to be either/or, but it depends on your goals…
February 17, 2011 5:48 pm at 5:48 pm #988753poster613MemberI think I almost find the answers here insulting to those of us with nerdy, smart and high end degrees. The way a professor of mine said it was, “It’s the nerds that make the world go round.” So, for those popular people that enjoy the phone remember who invented it. Remember who developed the technology for instant texting and wireless internet for instant communications. Remember who sends satellites into space so you can use your GPS to get to the mall and the highway systems upon which you drive. And, remember who designed the mall when you get there. And who developed all the medications to keep you healthy so you can spend time with your friends instead of a loner in bed.
Maybe when popular people see how they remain popular, they will remember us nerds who built it all for them.
But on a more serious not, popular people sure do provide us with entertainment…… 🙂
February 17, 2011 8:54 pm at 8:54 pm #988754pet peeveMember“people smart” is the way to go. someone socially savvy knows people-people interactions, a phenomenal skill to have in life. book smarts are great for a job, possibly, but you can’t argue that the social skills necessary are also invaluable. and, as was mentioned, its not the popularity per se that is important, b/c having millions of friends is a statement while a few close and trustworthy friends are what counts; its the social skills that i would find important. chances are, someone with good skills will be successful in numerous relationships.
February 18, 2011 12:07 am at 12:07 am #988755observanteenMemberPoster613: Wow! I never thought about it that way! You’re so right. I do love hanging out with friends, but, at the same time, love to learn serious stuff too.
February 18, 2011 2:31 am at 2:31 am #988756HealthParticipantI’m glad I’m not socially savvy. It seems from the description of them from the posters above, that a lot are two faced!
April 10, 2011 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #988757wallflowerParticipant“Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.”

April 10, 2011 7:53 pm at 7:53 pm #988758kishke 4 shabbosMemberI wasn’t always popular, but i was always smart and now that im popular too, i think its better to be popular because the high test marks didnt help me any when i had no friends and i was pretty miserable.
April 10, 2011 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #988759dancinggirlMemberi wud rather be how i am now socially, but be brilliant. its like that question “Wud u rather have the strength of a thousand athletes or the wisdom of a thousand scholars?” how cud strength compare to wisdom?
April 10, 2011 9:47 pm at 9:47 pm #988760i am hereMemberyou need a balance of both. sometimes its the one or to really good friends thats needed along with being smart as in practical not necessarily with test marks.
April 10, 2011 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #988761StuffedCabbageParticipantidk im not that brilliant now and im really totally fine with it… but i wouldnt mind having more friends. the more the merrier!!
April 11, 2011 2:12 pm at 2:12 pm #988762mytakeMemberThe popular debate among smart high schoolers…!
I don’t care for either of them.
It’s in my nature to resent popularity. I’m popular among my friends and family. But I was never the kid in school that EVERYONE (Nursery thru twelfth)) knew her name.
And about “smart”? Well, I’m definitely not stupid. But here’s how dictionary.com defines smart:
Smart: having or showing quick intelligence or ready mental capability
I’m more impressed with this one:
Wise: having the power of discerning and judging properly as to what is true or right; possessing discernment, judgment, or discretion.
Lucky me, I got both! 🙂 But seriously, smarts are overrated.
(If I’d define smart differently, I’d probably attach more importance to it, though.)
April 11, 2011 2:58 pm at 2:58 pm #988763hanibParticipantmytake – you took the words right out of my mouth.
i’d like to be wise most of all (though i believe if i was wise, i’d also be smart and know how to have/be friends with those i wish to be friends with.
April 11, 2011 5:26 pm at 5:26 pm #988764adorableParticipanti would rather be popular and then my friends can help me along in the brainy areas but you wont have so many friends and get very far if you dont have friends!
April 11, 2011 6:14 pm at 6:14 pm #988765hanibParticipantthough if you’re smart, you can help the popular girls and they’ll want you over at their house all the time to help study, and then can be friends with popular, if you want.:)
April 11, 2011 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm #988766StuffedCabbageParticipantyeah but then theyll just be using your brains-if you had no personality they wouldnt want to be your friend even if you had brains……
April 11, 2011 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #988767mytakeMemberJust because someone isn’t popular, doesn’t mean they don’t have plenty of friends.
For example, I was/am always popular among my friends, but not in the community/school/camp etc.
April 11, 2011 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #988768i am hereMembermytake – you are a hundred percent correct.
June 10, 2011 2:53 pm at 2:53 pm #988769wallflowerParticipantWhat’s popular anyway? Seriously, since when does quantity of friends count over quality?
June 10, 2011 7:27 pm at 7:27 pm #988770Sister BearMemberthe brainy guy will get a high powered, high paying job, bringing in boatloads of cash. what good will the social skills do?
Help you become the president 🙂 if you’re good with people and charismatic…
Seriously though, if you’re popular, in general it means that you have good middos because people don’t like hanging out with nasty people (I’m totally generalizing here). Now I’m not saying that if you’re smart you don’t have good middos I’m just focusing on popular. So I’d rather be popular than smart because books aren’t going to be there when you’re down and going through something difficult in life, like friends will.
And for those that said that friends come and go, true but there is nothing like a lifelong friend.
June 12, 2011 8:29 am at 8:29 am #988771haifagirlParticipantI would rather be popular, and then my friends can help me along in the brainy areas. [edited for spelling and grammar]
What makes you think you will have smart friends? Smart people like to hang out with other smart people.
June 12, 2011 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #988772wallflowerParticipantSister Bear — Books will too be there when you’re down.
