Is sleeping in the Sukkah obligatory or optional under halacha?
October 7, 2011 1:59 pm at 1:59 pm #816889GumBallMemberI always thought it was TONZA FUN!! its so cool 2 sleep in a sukkah no??
October 7, 2011 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm #816890shlishiMemberGum, How can any girls sleep in the Sukkah if the guys are sleeping there?
October 7, 2011 2:44 pm at 2:44 pm #816891✡onegoal™ParticipantA mechitza should work, but you need separate entrances.
THE ABOVE SENTENCE WAS A JOKE AND SHOULD NOT BE MISUNDERSTOOD FOR GIBBERISH.
October 7, 2011 2:49 pm at 2:49 pm #816892Sam2ParticipantObligatory unless it’s raining/too cold or there is a legitimate concern that you would get yourself sick.
The Rama has a Heter for married people and Chabad (in theory) has a Minhag not, but it’s against the Din of the Gemara and Poskim so it’s probably not a Minhag that should be followed.
October 7, 2011 2:56 pm at 2:56 pm #816893Dr. SeussMemberSo Shulchan Aruch mandates sleeping the Sukkah, correct?
October 7, 2011 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #816894adorableParticipantwhy wouldnt you want to? unless its cold but even then. bundle up and have a great nights sleep! YUM! yes I am a girl and I have slept in the sukka many times!
October 7, 2011 3:06 pm at 3:06 pm #816895✡onegoal™ParticipantHow about the animals, some places have raccoons, rats, skunks, possums, and who knows what else? Is there a heter for it then? I assume if you live in a bad neighborhood where you may not be safe in your sukkah, you would not have to sleep in it.
October 7, 2011 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #816896GumBallMemberLOL I don’t sleep in a sukkah!! only my brothers and father!!! I wish I could Sleep in a sukkah!! TONZA FUN!!
October 7, 2011 3:22 pm at 3:22 pm #816897adorableParticipantso do!
October 7, 2011 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm #816898GumBallMemberYea i wish but i cant cuz i cant really sleep with 3 boys and my father!!
October 7, 2011 3:42 pm at 3:42 pm #816899Sam2ParticipantCorrect, if it’s unsafe one can leave. The rule is that you treat the Sukkah like your own room. If you would leave your bedroom because there is noise, animals, etc. and go to a different room in the house then you can leave the Sukkah for those same reasons.
October 7, 2011 3:47 pm at 3:47 pm #816900adorableParticipantnever thought about what I would do if I had a racoon, squirrels, and chipmunks in my room.
October 7, 2011 3:49 pm at 3:49 pm #816901GumBallMemberadorable-LOL did u ever sleep in a sukkah b4?
October 7, 2011 3:51 pm at 3:51 pm #816902Sam2ParticipantGumball: Maybe you or your father can make you your own small Sukkah just for you to sleep in. I have seen people do that.
October 7, 2011 3:56 pm at 3:56 pm #816903supergirl613Memberi have slept in hte sukkah before any of my siblings were married, so it was just me and my father and brother. my sukkah was also on the roof, so it was easier. but when my sisters got married, then I had to stop. but gumballs right, it is TONZA FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 7, 2011 4:04 pm at 4:04 pm #816904zahavasdadParticipantDont Forget Possums
Those things are nasty
October 7, 2011 4:15 pm at 4:15 pm #816905adorableParticipantdo you let zahava sleep in the sukka?
October 7, 2011 4:18 pm at 4:18 pm #816906sam4321ParticipantSam2:Do not forget Belz, they also don’t sleep in the sukkah.
October 7, 2011 4:20 pm at 4:20 pm #816907Sam2ParticipantSam4: I don’t know what to say to those who don’t. It’s against a black and white Din in the Gemara. Assuming the weather is fair it’s a Bittul Asei D’Oraisa. The weather always having been too cold in Europe can’t be an excuse for Eretz Yisrael (and sometimes in America) now.
October 7, 2011 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #816908YW Moderator-80Memberthere are numerous heterim
many Poskim say if your wife, who may not have a Mitzvah to sleep in the Sukkah, wishes not to, then the husbsnd has a heter to not sleep in the Sukkah, and it may even be preferable to NOT sleep in the Sukkah, as that is not his normal way of life to sleep apart.
similar to those who eat in the Sukkah (not the first night) when it is raining, who are called fools.
October 7, 2011 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm #816909Sam2ParticipantM80: I quoted that there is a very good Heter for married people. I believe it’s a Rama. What’s the Heter for Bochurim?
October 7, 2011 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm #816910ItcheSrulikMemberMy neighborhood has way too much wildlife (four, six, and eight-legged) to sleep in the sukka, but I tried it one night last year anyway. I spent half the night chasing feral cats and the other half getting bitten by mosquitoes. I’m debating whether or not I learned my lesson about being such a frummak.
October 7, 2011 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm #816911sam4321ParticipantIn New York it is hard to sleep in sukkah the extremes of weather(really cold or really hot)but I think it is best to try and then if your uncomfortable then you leave.
October 7, 2011 5:19 pm at 5:19 pm #816912YW Moderator-80Memberdont know of any heterim for bochrim specifically
i believe we are all called an istinus today in america
perhaps tzar from the cold
fear of muggers, animals
inability to sleep due to those and other discomforts
dont know really
October 7, 2011 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm #816913happiestMemberMy father and brothers don’t sleep in the succah but for safety reasons. I live in a safe neighborhood but it is also very very close to a not so safe neighborhood so they were told not to sleep in it.
October 9, 2011 3:22 am at 3:22 am #816914Dr. SeussMemberNew York’s weather is inhospitable to sleeping the Sukkah?? Sukkos was put in the cold season by design by Hashem. The sleeping in the Sukkah halachos are despite that.
October 9, 2011 3:27 am at 3:27 am #816915popa_bar_abbaParticipantSukkos was put in the cold season by design by Hashem. The sleeping in the Sukkah halachos are despite that.
Yet, the halacha still is that mitztaer is pattur from sukka.
It is so cool what you can do when you learn halacha from halacha seforim instead of from third grade.
October 9, 2011 3:31 am at 3:31 am #816916Sam2ParticipantDr. Seuss: In Eretz Yisroel it’s not cold.
October 9, 2011 3:37 am at 3:37 am #816917sam4321ParticipantAll you have to due is your histadlus if it is too cold then you go inside.
October 9, 2011 3:48 am at 3:48 am #816918HealthParticipantSam2 – “I don’t know what to say to those who don’t. It’s against a black and white Din in the Gemara.”
In other posts you wrote Minhag Oiker Din, so why can’t there be a Minhag not to?
October 9, 2011 3:56 am at 3:56 am #816919HealthParticipantSam2 -M80: I quoted that there is a very good Heter for married people”
I used to think like you, but a lot of Poskim don’t like this Heter. As a matter of fact I just saw a Poisek saying even if your wife won’t have a good nite’s sleep because she will toss and turn because she is alone, it’s not enough to Patter the husband.
Cold is also not so Poshut because you can sleep with a heater or a sleeping bag. If you still are uncomfortable, then you can go into the house to sleep.
October 9, 2011 3:58 am at 3:58 am #816920Sam2ParticipantSam4: If it’s obviously way too cold you don’t even have to try, especially if there is concern you might get sick.
October 9, 2011 4:02 am at 4:02 am #816921HealthParticipantSam2 -“Sam4: If it’s obviously way too cold you don’t even have to try, especially if there is concern you might get sick.”
Read my post above -Yes you have to try.
Also, you can’t catch a cold (virus) from cold weather!
October 9, 2011 4:10 am at 4:10 am #816922Sam2ParticipantHealth: If it’s obvious you don’t have to try. Just like I wouldn’t go into my room if it was 40 degrees (F), I don’t even have to go into the Sukkah. And while that is technically true, your body has a much harder time fighting off any infection or virus whatsoever when it’s colder.
October 9, 2011 4:20 am at 4:20 am #816923HaLeiViParticipantHealth, although we all know that the common cold is actually a virus, we also observed the fact that people usually catch it when they were in the cold. That might be due to an inhibited immune system, or anything else. There is no need to ignore the observed facts in favor of what you know.
October 9, 2011 4:23 am at 4:23 am #816924HaLeiViParticipantSam2, I didn’t get to it this year, yet, but I think the Rama was actually trying to find a reason for what was already an established Hanhaga that people didn’t sleep in the Succah.
October 9, 2011 4:29 am at 4:29 am #816925HaLeiViParticipantHey, that’s an interesting parallel. The Rama adapted his knowledge to the fact that it was not Nahug to sleep in the Succah. And here, we are doing that with regard to the knowledge of the common cold being a virus and the fact that it is commonly caught in the cold — hence the name.
October 9, 2011 4:30 am at 4:30 am #816926HealthParticipantHaLeiVi – Yep, that’s why I wear a coat in the winter, something I don’t see a lot of kids doing nowadays, esp. during recess.
October 9, 2011 4:38 am at 4:38 am #816927HealthParticipantSam2 -“Health: If it’s obvious you don’t have to try. Just like I wouldn’t go into my room if it was 40 degrees (F), I don’t even have to go into the Sukkah.”
Sorry to disagree with you Rabbi, but there is a Chiyuv of Kein Todoroo. So 40 degrees can be changed with a heater or using a sleeping bag. (Sleeping bags -Some actually go to 20 degrees.)
Cold isn’t a P’tur, unless you are a Mefunak!
October 9, 2011 7:09 am at 7:09 am #816928sam4321ParticipantSomeone asked Rav Shlomo Zalaman if one is in his first year of marriage is he patur from sukka? He said he did not see it mentioned anywhere that he should be patur, but in the case his wife is afraid to sleep alone then in that case it seems one could be maikel.
October 9, 2011 10:53 am at 10:53 am #816929twistedParticipantSorry chevra, but at least those of you who feel meshubad to the Rama, need to brush up on tav resh mem/daled, according to which, if a preexisting condition (wild life, likelihood of thieves) prevents one function of teshvu k’ein taduru, such as sleep, then you are not yotze any other function either, such as eating.
October 9, 2011 4:38 pm at 4:38 pm #816930sam4321ParticipantTwisted: Wouldn’t there be a nafka minah if with other people or by day time it is safe, but at night by yourself you are more prone to danger?
October 9, 2011 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm #816931Dr. SeussMemberWhere is a second or third floor Succah unsafe at night but safe at day?
October 9, 2011 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm #816932sam4321ParticipantWho said it is on a second or third floor.I am talking about on ground level where if there is many people it will deter thieves but during late night it is not safe.
October 9, 2011 5:08 pm at 5:08 pm #816933i am hereMembermy father used to sleep in the succah at night but once when he woke up in the morning he saw that someone had spray painted a swastika on the succa wall on the outside and left a bottle of gasoline near the succah so since then he just takes naps in the succah in the afternoon.
October 9, 2011 5:37 pm at 5:37 pm #816934am yisrael chaiParticipanti am here
OY!
Any arrests?
October 9, 2011 6:16 pm at 6:16 pm #816935HaLeiViParticipantI am here,
That’s still way better than finding it on the inside!
October 9, 2011 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm #816936twistedParticipantSam4231: There doesn’t seem to be a nafka mina in a plain reading of the halacha. The prime example the SA gives for mitztaer is the inability to sleep due to bugs odor or wind, but only if not expected, and one cannot build a sukkah in such unpleasant circumstances and claim to be mitztaer, or iow you were mavatel the mitzva. The Rama’s calculus says if it is unusable for any basic function that you home provides, it is not a sukkah.
One nafkamina is that unlike most halacha, mitztaer is somewhat subjective. Thats how in places like Petrograd, they bundled up, put on the fur hats, and drank hot, fermented borcsht in conditions that the SA would say is patur. With the same subjectivity you might say that the stymied lone sleeper is not yotzee eating breakfast either, but his guests who had no intention to sleep there, are yotze eating there. I know one fellow, locked and loaded, who would love nothing more than an intruder. But the halacha generally doesn’t focus on the odd case. Run this by your LOR.
October 9, 2011 9:05 pm at 9:05 pm #816937i am hereMemberno arrests but it was enough of a scare for my family. I do think that my brothers sleep in the succah anyways since this happened b-4 we were born.
