I am sitting in Starbucks drinking coffee right now. (I sometimes come and sit here all day drinking free refills.)
While on line, I asked myself why I was willing to drink it. I noticed that the coffee drips into large metal boxes, which probably are washed in a dish washer. If it is done without soap and with tarfus, the keilim should be treif, I imagine.
I decided that stam keilim are ainum bnei yoman, which is a sfeik sfeika, since the keilim may not have been exposed to tarfus in the last 24 hours, and even if they were, it may have been something which is pogem b’ein.
I further decided that bacon sandwiches are definitely pogem coffee. I further decided that I was drinking it, since I always have, and they didn’t say you can’t.

Mods, I thought that word wasn’t allowed on YWN anymore.
February 13, 2011 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm #756565deiyezoogerMemberwhat kind of respond do you, popa, want to hear?
February 13, 2011 6:16 pm at 6:16 pm #756566popa_bar_abbaParticipantI was hoping for other people to chime in why they are still drinking it also.
February 13, 2011 6:36 pm at 6:36 pm #756567deiyezoogerMemberwho said somebody is drinking from there? maybe your the only one there? jk lol!
February 13, 2011 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm #756568☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think consuming that much coffee is pogem one’s brain.
By the way, with or without the hooves?
February 13, 2011 6:47 pm at 6:47 pm #756569popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe hooves are not pogem. That is why I was concerned about them on the other thread.
February 13, 2011 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #756570chayav inish livisumayParticipantwe have a klal that goyim cant be trusted for aidus. therefore how can u rely on them that something they say is chazaar is really chazaar. Furthermore there is no hechsher on macdonalds saying that it is reaslly treif. i was mitxtareif these two svaaras and if you also realize that all live pigs are anoy ben yomo and are cold, there is no problem to eat in macdonalds because after all lo nitnah hatorah limalachay hashurays.

February 13, 2011 7:46 pm at 7:46 pm #756573popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhy? are they the only one’s you trust? What kind of bubby are you anyway?
February 13, 2011 7:53 pm at 7:53 pm #756574ShintavMemberHow come whenever you ask an innocent, non-l’maysa question to some people the answer (both on and offline) becomes ‘ARE YOU A POSEK?!?!?!’ My answer to this would be ‘No. No I’m not. I’m trying to have an intelligent conversation. Is this new to you?’
February 13, 2011 8:04 pm at 8:04 pm #756575☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI’m trying to have an intelligent conversation. Is this new to you?
In the coffee room? Unfortunately, too rare.
February 13, 2011 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #756576rabbiofberlinParticipantwhat is going on here ? it seems that the coffee went to popa’s head! all silly talk and frivolous remarks…on a serious note- those huge metal pots of coffee are to big to put into any dishwasher.they are (probably) scoured by hand and thouroughly washed separately. I am also pretty sure that detergent is always used- for sanitary purposes. Plus= what “keilim’ are there that may be treif- i said once before that the food is brought in from a central commissary and is offered on disposable plates. I am still waiting for the CrC paper….
February 13, 2011 9:30 pm at 9:30 pm #756577truth be toldMemberGood Rabbi: Why do jou write CrC? Its cRc
February 13, 2011 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm #756578shlishiMemberyou’re making too many assumptions rabbiofberlin. the cRc didn’t make this announcement to stir up trouble. there is a genuine concern here. until that is clarified, best to stay far away from starbucks if you value kashrus.

There’s one sha’ala you’ve not addressed. Is one allowed to drink coffee outside CR. Something like ??? ?????.
February 13, 2011 10:11 pm at 10:11 pm #756580popa_bar_abbaParticipantWell, I don’t need to answer that, since I am in the coffee room.
February 13, 2011 10:16 pm at 10:16 pm #756581ZeesKiteParticipantCounselor, kindly refer to par. 1 – ‘I am sitting in Starbucks drinking coffee right now’
February 13, 2011 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm #756582ItcheSrulikMemberYoreh or yadin? Which one?
Seems that I should start being makpid to drink starbucks whenever possible.
February 13, 2011 10:32 pm at 10:32 pm #756583popa_bar_abbaParticipantUPDATE:
I asked the lady how they wash the carafes. She said by hand with a special cleaning agent. (Presumably made from pig’s hooves.)
Furthermore, there are no removable pieces of the pot which are not touched only derech irui. I assume the klipa is batul b’shishim, but even if it wasn’t I would rely on the Rema 91:4, see taz 7 argues, shach 8 agrees to Rema when it is nivlal (like here).
New question. I asked for a decaf, which they made in a one cup dripper, and brought the hot water in a plastic measuring cup. I am drinking it. Why?
February 13, 2011 11:00 pm at 11:00 pm #756584ZeesKiteParticipantAll kidding aside, is there a problem with the coffee they serve on planes?
February 14, 2011 12:33 am at 12:33 am #756585The Other GuyMemberIs plastic bole’a? Even so, I see them washing things by hand all the time, a mesuring cup used just for water is bistomah ok…

apparently youre not waiting for it before arguing with it
February 14, 2011 1:46 am at 1:46 am #756587HealthParticipantI know a problem that I’ve been told about Starbucks, that a lot of people are Nichshol in. They sell this cookie and people found out that it’s kosher. The store even hangs a Tzeteil (paper) about the hechsher. So a lot of frum people eat it. So what’s the problem? It’s treif -the cookie- because what they do is heat up their cookies beforehand to make them crisp in the treif oven and rewrap them. Noone asked except for one person I know. So everybody eats the cookies because they are “kosher”!
I wouldn’t underestimate a chusuver hechsher like cRc. You don’t know what goes on behind the scenes.
February 14, 2011 2:30 am at 2:30 am #756588Shmuel294MemberHealth:
As in anyplace a person must be careful with what he is eating. Because some things in the store are kosher does not mean everything is. Our discussion is about the COFFEE not any other items that Starbucks sell.
Next. About their coffee, as was said before, there was a hechsher which meant that the things that are kosher, are kosher.
February 14, 2011 2:35 am at 2:35 am #756589canineMemberShmeul294: Starbucks coffee in their coffee shops does NOT have a hechsher.
February 14, 2011 2:40 am at 2:40 am #756590Shmuel294MemberPopa:
Personally, I don’t know why people want to drink at Starbucks so much to make sucha big deal out of this. I suggest DUNKIN DONUTS instead. (don’t worry, they don’t serve hooves there)
February 14, 2011 2:42 am at 2:42 am #756591HealthParticipantShmuel294- I don’t know what you’re talking about. No starbucks that I know of has a hechsher. The store put up a sign advertising that the cookies that they sell there are kosher. Well they might have been kosher until starbucks got a hold of them. Do you work in a kashrus org.? How do you know their coffee is kosher? If the cRc says there might be a problem, before you or anyone Machs Avek at least contact them to see what they have to say. Sitting around and Maching Avek is easy thing to do, esp. if you think you’re the Grose Talmid Chochom. But watch out, if there is a problem, you can’t claim shogeg anymore!

I am not in Starbucks anymore. But, I was there from 8:30 AM until 7:00 PM, during which time I bought one “tall” coffee for about $1.65, and had about 4 free refills. Good deal. Even for treif coffee.

They do cite that only cans and bottles (except strawberries) is under their actual supervision but they say nothing about the coffees consumed on the premises.
popa- if i’d be a dayan ,i’d say that you are guilty of ‘geneivas daas”. Seriously, though, you must have a very boring life to spend your whole day in Starbucks…..

Chicago Rabbinical Council
Guide to Starbucks Beverages
February 2011
Starbucks shops serve many kosher and non-kosher items, with the most
serious non-kosher item being hot meat sandwiches. The standard daily
clean up at Starbucks includes a hot wash of all utensils and some
parts of that washing are done without soap. This clean up process
significantly challenges the kosher status of the otherwise kosher
products and each product must be judged by a competent halachic
authority. The cRc will be printing a detailed review and analysis of
this topic in the upcoming edition of The Journal of Halacha and
Contemporary Society, and that article will subsequently be available
on the cRc website.
The good news is that there are many Starbucks locations that do not
serve hot meat sandwiches. These are generally the Starbucks kiosks
that can be found in airports, department stores, supermarkets, etc.,
and at these locations the cRc is comfortable recommending any drink
made from kosher ingredients (even though some others use ingredients
that may not be kosher).
This list is accurate at this time for stores in the United States,
and does not address toppings and other items added to beverages.
Since the information on this list is subject to change, this list
should not be used after June 30, 2011.
Note: I just tried this link and it does not work, but it worked earlier. Strange. This link from Google is also broken.
February 14, 2011 3:51 am at 3:51 am #756603Josh31ParticipantWas the Starbucks on a street corner?
If yes, then sitting their for 10 and a half hours will qualify you as the “yoshvei keranos” (those who sit at street corners as opposed to the Beit Medrash) mentioned at every Siyum.
To avoid this designation go to a Starbucks that is not at a street corner, or stand up at least once every 18 minutes.
This year I get to do Purim Torah for 2 months!!!

Firstly, it is a good thing you are not a dayan. I didn’t start this issue. http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/crc-starbucks-kashrus-alert
Secondly: “Seriously, though, you must have a very boring life to spend your whole day in Starbucks…..“
Why would you say that? Why don’t you ask what I was doing in Starbucks all day? (In between talking to myself on YWN.)

as i remember it, lmaskana, they came out that there really was no problem with indian hair sheitels. they might not be recomendable, but not a problem. also, if u look at the pervious disscussion, the one that got closed before popa opened it again, a post by SHILSHI said and i quote “how can anyone drink from starbucks even now, knowing what we now know. even if more information if forthcoming, we already know there is a major problem. i dont see how its possible to drink there” and this is before the cRc has made their final desicion.
