It looks like tonight, many in the tri-state area will be unable to have their seudah in the sukkah. Even making kiddush and hamotzi will be done without a bracha if the weather forecast stays as it is now.
So how do we keep our simchas yom tov going, when we are missing out on this mitzvah?
I think it’s all about our mindset. I once heard an explanation for why we say al chet for things that were done b’ones. If it was an ones, why do we need forgiveness? The answer was, that sometimes, we do a mitzvah because we have to, and don’t always appreciate it – and when given the chance to not have to keep it, we jump at it. For example, let’s say someone doesn’t enjoy having to eat in the sukkah. If it rains, he might be happy that now he can eat inside his house. That joy is what we need forgiveness for.
So how do we keep our simchas Yom Tov now? I think we need the proper mindset regarding the mitzvah. Yes, we want to eat in the sukkah, and it should pain us to have to eat inside. But remember that our avodah is to follow the halachos – and in this case, the halachah says to eat inside. This is a halachah that we don’t always get to keep. So we should follow the halchah with joy! Not because we don’t want to eat in the sukkah, but because by eating inside, we are fulfilling Hashem’s will!
If we approach this situation with the mindset that we are doing ratzon Hashem, we can keep our simchas Yom Tov. IYH tomorrow, we will be able to properly eat in the sukkah, with a brachah. And soon, we should all be eating in the sukkas livyasan!
Have a wonderful Yom Tov!October 2, 2023 10:10 am at 10:10 am #2228760keithParticipantIsn’t that like the chassidishe story about the two rabbis locked in prison. The guards kept the toilet bucket in the cell so they couldn’t daven. The one was so depressed. The other began to dance for joy. The one was depressed because he could not pray. The other realized that just like there is a commitment to pray there’s a commitment not to pray in such a situation, and he is able to fulfill the ratzon H-Shem in a different way, a way he didn’t expect. His job is not to daven. (Or eat in a sukkah etc) His job is to do the eibishters will so he was joyful. When the guard saw how excited he was he removed the toilet Pail and they could daven.

And Hashem loves when Jews want to do Mitzvos!!
The absolute certainty of some people that “knew” there would be no Sukka this year was disheartening.
A little faith, and little hope, a little humility , and some more yearning for what we really look forward to, all that could have been improved upon.
BH we got a special Bracha! More and more imyH !!
Moadim Lisimcha!!!
