This really shouldn’t be a new topic but, well, I am a Moderator
His album, Yidid, the eighth track, called “Shema” has some lyrics I can’t understand
1. “a citadel of mashin stone”
2. “everyone in the chlanger, the tears on her face”
Can anyone help? Both instances are in the first minute or two of the track.. Thanks
Perhaps we can try a thread on the REAL lyrics to various songs, and what you thought they were at one time.
Or how your kids mistakenly sing songs, etc.

September 14, 2009 11:18 pm at 11:18 pm #1087630JosephParticipantI never quite understood why some musicians feel the need to make the words unintelligable.

Here’s a thought: If you sacrifice preciseness in creating art, that is called poetic license. So if you could use poetic license but don’t, does that make you a better artist or a worse one?
September 15, 2009 12:04 am at 12:04 am #1087632JosephParticipantsqueak, I am referring to songs that the music is too loud to hear the words, or they are otherwise uttered in an unintelligable manner. Not sure if your point regarding preciseness is related to that.
September 15, 2009 12:10 am at 12:10 am #1087633YW Moderator-80Member“Yet (but?) one image lingered” I hear.
I’m still hearing a citadel of “mashin stone” though
September 15, 2009 12:35 am at 12:35 am #1087634strivingMembermod-80 are you serious?? you really hear mashin stone??? haha but context clues!!!! lol i bet it’s hard for you to understand people with accents too- right?
September 15, 2009 12:49 am at 12:49 am #1087635LAerMemberYou sure it’s not “ancient stone?”
September 15, 2009 2:17 am at 2:17 am #1087636kapustaParticipant80, I’m rotfl from the second one, dunno why.
As far as the lyrics go, the first one is “a citadel of ashen stone”. The second one is (as much as I can make of it) “yet one/once……. lingered.”
thanks for the laugh, and btw, you gotta catch up on your music!!!

thanks for the laugh is right!!
as mentioned above:
“ashen stone”
“yet one image lingered”
now why oh why would a citadel want to mash stone?
September 15, 2009 3:58 pm at 3:58 pm #1087638YW Moderator-42ModeratorIt still sounds to me like “lashen stone”, but I am pretty sure it is “ashen”. I always read the lyrics when I get a new CD to get the words down.
I don’t like when the music is too loud that you can’t hear the words. I also don’t like when the singers don’t pronounce the words. I usually enjoy songs more for the words than for the music. That is why I like Abie Rotenberg especially the Journeys CDs. Abie always pronounces every letter. I think that the Shema song being discussed in this thread was written by Abie and sung by Shwekey.
September 15, 2009 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #1087639YW Moderator-80MemberIt’s not ancient. Could be ashen, but I still here an “M” sound. Maybe “matchin(g) stone? or match and stone?
September 15, 2009 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #1087640YW Moderator-80MemberMy anekal sings a song “Tomorrow”. Instead of “bet your bottom dollar” that tomorrow, she sings “bed a bada dada” that tomorrow.

September 15, 2009 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm #1087646WolfishMusingsParticipantA very often (and very famous) mistaken heard lyric from the Beatles. The correct lyric is “the girl with kaleidoscope eyes.” It’s often misheard as “the girl with colitis* goes by.”

I could type the whole thing out, but it’s too tedious, especially in Eengleesh.

I’m not talking about the yiddish, theres one line, “elah elah…” around 2:20. what is the next word?!?!?!
September 16, 2009 3:55 am at 3:55 am #1087659postsemgirlMemberKapusta- First of all the word are written in the paper that comes with the cd. Second of all the words are aramaic so they are hard to make out but I did read the cover because it gets me annoyed when I don’t know the words to songs so here goes. dihu Elaka kishot vioyrayseh kishot and then comes the yiddish part. It’s kinda funny to mix yiddish with aramaic!

September 16, 2009 4:37 am at 4:37 am #1087662ambushParticipantok here’s one that never fails to make me laugh.
We were teaching a song to a bunch of kiruv kids that goes like this:
“I’m a Jew, it’s my identity,
my name, my soul, my life”!
Only to overhear some kids singing it later:
“I’m a Jew, It’s my identity,
my neighbor stole my wife!”
I REALLY hope they became frum after that…!

September 16, 2009 2:23 pm at 2:23 pm #1087667seeallsidesParticipantthis goes back to probly before you were all born – but i remember there was a song by the Everly Bros (maybe) and the lyric was
I’m just a soul whose intentions are good –
and i remember somebody singing I’m just a soldier whose tent is no good !
September 16, 2009 3:20 pm at 3:20 pm #1087668squeakParticipantseeallsides – I didn’t know they had the ability to make recordings back before all of us were born! How did you come to hear such a lyric? Was it passed down from generation to generation until it could be recorded in the late 1800’s? That would be amazing!
Also, did you know that a group called the Everly Brothers was around in the 1950’s and 60’s? Do you know how they were able to steal the name (and that lyric) from the original group that you heard? Maybe they were aineklach (or great-great-aineklach)?

how about the pledge of allegiance.
“I pledge…and to the republic for richard sans”
September 16, 2009 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm #1087674Mayan_DvashParticipantI used to think the lyrics were:
Miami….
The greatest town
n’this country
Jumpin up and down
Miami…
But it really is
Miami….
The greatest town
It’s got me
Jumpin up and down
Miami…
I didn’t see the lyrics anywhere (the original album is from the late 70’s) but I was listening carefully one day (I bought Miami Meets Toronto CD a couple years ago which also has it) and heard the real words.
Now it makes more sense.
