    Two things:

    1. You can always use an SMS translator to read a text speak encrypted post. For example http://transl8it.com/

    2. Perhaps more importantly, the person in question is most likely using such a site for its english to text translating capability to encrypt posts. Dont forget what this site is (and what we’ve seen before). Spelling mistakes dont get translated correctly if at all, which indicates that one probably is being used.

I’m feeling sorry for the OP. This was supposed to be a thread for votes. Not discussion. Most of you apparently did not bother reading her post.

Perhaps before we address the issue of how, and in what language, posters should be allowed to WRITE their posts, we should encourage the good members of the CR to READ.

Daas Y, that was just an inconsequential addendum.

My “NO” vote was already posted.

    Way at the beginning.

Anybody out there keeping count? Making sure ballots are secure? OP?

Saysme, I think that grammar and spelling do say alot about a person, I happen to psychoanalyze every single aspect of everything so maybe just me but I think it has a lot to do with what kind of errors they make too. If the I in a ywn post is not capitalized, or the first letter of a sentence, I don’t think it makes a difference, and if contractions don’t have an apostrophe it also doesn’t really say much about a person . The big things, however, do give over a lot about a person.

Poor grammar makes one sound uneducated and quite stupid. It can also lead to people misunderstanding what you are saying. Additionally it becomes a habit and can cause you problems down the road if you ever want to go to college or ever have to write anything that sounds coherent.

WIY, I wholeheartedly agree with you except for one thing that you implied. People are inherently good at things just like people can be inherently bad at things. Some people are just not good at spelling or English, and education only helps to some degree. Obviously everyone should learn to write coherently but if it ain’t there it ain’t there. While true that it will cause difficulty down the road, sometimes it just isn’t a person’s fault. Someone could be a math genius and not know how to write a sentence, the same way I consider myself to be a pretty good writer but couldn’t do math if you paid me.

To my sorrow, my grammar A”H died in 1984. She was quite prim and proper about how she wrote but she was also an author. I think she would have approved of anyone’s right to express themselves however they see fit as long as it isn’t offensive to others. So I vote NO.

Since this is topic too controversial, I’ll abstain.

When I run for office I don’t want anybody to bring this vote up as ammunition against me… Maybe I’ll do some polling first to determine the public’s POV. Oh, I forgot, I’m not planning to run for anything, but isn’t being PC some sort of mitzva? Never mind.

How about requiring better grammar and spelling the longer the post?

    #1258729

How about just shortening the post?

    Yes and no.

I think the grammar should be as good as is necessary to understand what is being said and as is necessary to sound like a reasonably intelligent human being for whom english is his/her first language.

On the other hand, if one has to worry too much about his grammar being perfect, it is sometimes harder to fully express oneself. I think there is a certain level/type of grammar error that is acceptable in a post that would not be acceptable in an academic work, etc. Something along the lines of poetic license.

And yes, that last sentence was meant to be an example. 🙂

“the grammar should be as good as is necessary to understand what is being said”

I don’t think it matters whether the grammar understands what is being said. It’s the person reading that needs to understand.

No offense, just pointing out how difficult it would be to implement this policy. 🙂
