I’ve been a taxpayer for over 20 years but at this point i probably qualify for food stamps should i dip my hand in the till?
December 29, 2011 6:38 pm at 6:38 pm #841430BTGuyParticipantIf you qualify, they are saying you are entitled to the assistance. I am sure you give to help others. If you can benefit from something and you qualify, why not ease the burden?
December 29, 2011 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm #841431☕️coffee addictParticipantThe goq,
I commend you for not wanting to rely on the gov’t
The main question is “do you need it to live?”
December 29, 2011 7:05 pm at 7:05 pm #841432TheGoqParticipantRight now i really on financial assistance from my family, so if i were to go on food stamps it would lessen their burden.
December 29, 2011 7:14 pm at 7:14 pm #841433sem graduateMemberI don’t know if it’s a question of whether or not you need it in order to live or if it’s a question of whether you really qualify. They guidelines for government programs such as medicaid and foodstamps are very low unless you have a large family. The only program you can pretty easily get onto is WIC. If you truly qualify, then you need it to live because there is no way that you are paying rent, insurance, gas, tuition, electricity etc. with your income. Any extra help is welcome If you don’t qualify – they are cracking down these days so I don’t think its worth “making yourself qualify” because you’ll be slapped with a very heavy fine if they catch you.
December 29, 2011 7:36 pm at 7:36 pm #841434BTGuyParticipantHi coffee addict.
I respect the idea of being self sufficient.
But the implication that the government is a separate entity, is not true. Our lives are soaked in government. Taxation is just one area.
We are taxed at the register, in our weekly paychecks, at the end of the year… We are taxed by our municipality, the state, and the federal government.
We basically pay and pay and pay. If government actuaries, or whatever, determine that a person in such and such a situation and income is entitled to assistance, then what point is to be made by denying oneself?
If one truly believes in not relying on the government, then they should protest any government involvement in their lives and refuse to participate in contributing, rather than refuse to benefit.
But to fully cooperate and pay all those taxes and then deny yourself assistance, if needed, proves what point? There is no honor in that.
I think taxpayers are more entitled to benefit from assistance, if they are taxpaying citizens who qualify, than to use coupons to buy things at a discount. Why not pay full price to be honorable?
December 29, 2011 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm #841435A Heimishe MomParticipantWait a sec goq. I’ve been around for a while now. If the sum of your posts is correct, you are single and living on your own? Before dipping into the government, why dont you give up your apartment and move in with family? If that is seriously, everything considered, really not an option, as a single adult you will have to be making somewhere in the vicinity of $10 a month to qualify. (I might be exagerating, but it is very very low.)
December 29, 2011 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #841436yitayningwutParticipantIf you qualify, go for it.
December 29, 2011 7:59 pm at 7:59 pm #841437bptParticipantIf you qualify, (without cheating / shifting $$, assets to someone esle’s name, country) then take the money. Its yours, as you paid in to the tax base in your pre-qualified days.
Think of it as early Social Security. Its not a gift, its YOUR MONEY!
December 29, 2011 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm #841438☕️coffee addictParticipantBtguy,
I’ve heard that argument before (if they’re taking our money we should follow their rules and be on food stamps)
The gemara states aseh shabbascha chol v’al titzarech l’briyos
Btw my family also gets food stamps and medicaid and we use the money I make for other things, the difference is that the goq asked
December 29, 2011 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm #8414392scentsParticipantIf you really qualify you should take whatever the government has to offer.
Whats the question?
December 29, 2011 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #841440TheGoqParticipantI will have to find out if i qualify i probably do.
December 29, 2011 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #841441zahavasdadParticipantIf you qualify then you should use them
You nutrition is very important
December 29, 2011 9:25 pm at 9:25 pm #841442yungerman1ParticipantWhy wouldnt you take food stamps if you are eligible? The only thing I can think of would be ???? ????? ????.
However, as BTGuy and bpt have said, you have been paying taxes everyday of your life to pay for local, state, and federal services which include police, fire, public works…AND medicaid, food stamps etc.. I dont see any diference between using the first two services mentioned when needed and not the last two.
December 29, 2011 10:00 pm at 10:00 pm #841443thecommissionerParticipantIt seems that in today’s day and age, every newly married couple “goes on food stamps”. Food stamps was not created to supplement peoples income. Food stamps were created, because there were people who were not able to put food on their tables. If you lease a new Honda, and you apply for food stamps, your stealing, period, end of the story.
There are many people who try to justify themselves stealing from the government. “I pay more then my fair share of taxes” “if “yenem” gets food stamps, why can’t I?”
Hashem makes sure each person gets what they deserve, if you get something by stealing it, it gets equaled out by flat tires, and other expenses. I have found that I live much easier not having all these “extra expenses”
December 29, 2011 10:11 pm at 10:11 pm #841444☕️coffee addictParticipantThe question is that even though you qualify do you really need its service
December 29, 2011 10:37 pm at 10:37 pm #841445commonsenseParticipantI am pretty much a straight shooter and get very upset about people who lie to get on programs, but if you qualify legitimately then there is no reason you should not get it. The programs are there for those who need it and should be used by those people.
To heimishe mom, sorry but I don’t think his moving in with his family is a good idea. Single adults need to live as adults with an adults responsibilities. Living at home is usually not a good idea for the single or for the family. Any way if he was married would you tell him to move into his family with his wife? So why should he do so because he is single?
January 4, 2012 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm #841446BTGuyParticipantHi Coffee Addict.
So you have heard the argument before. Great! Frequency or infrequency of hearing something does not really lend itself to validation or invalidation.
I dont really see where we are in disagreement, although we dont have to agree. It’s “funner” not to .
lol
January 4, 2012 4:25 pm at 4:25 pm #841447Feif UnParticipantThe Goq, I’m curious if you are working or not. Do you have a job? Are you looking for one? What about your spouse (I don’t know if you’re a man or a woman)?
January 4, 2012 5:17 pm at 5:17 pm #841448aries2756ParticipantGoq, once you “join” the system it is extremely difficult to break away from it. Is there any way you can find a different job that will appreciate your talents and pay you accordingly? Honestly, that is my first suggestion, mishaneh makom mishaneh mazal. Maybe it is time to break free of this type of job and try to move up into a better paying environment where there is more opportunity for growth and advancement.
January 4, 2012 5:33 pm at 5:33 pm #841449amichaiParticipantyes, if you qualify, and as you said it will ease the burden from your family. hatzlocha.
January 4, 2012 5:46 pm at 5:46 pm #841450TheGoqParticipantFeif im male unmarried and work at a low paying job. Aries despite the low pay it would be hard for me to leave where i am at i cant really explain why its just not conceivable right now.
January 4, 2012 7:05 pm at 7:05 pm #841451Feif UnParticipantGoq, in your case I say yes, you should get the food stamps. They’re there to help those who are trying but can’t really make ends meet. If you didn’t have a job and didn’t want one, I’d say no, but because you are working and trying your best, go ahead and get the help. Just remember that all the different programs to help people should be used as a b’dieved, not l’chatchilah.
January 4, 2012 7:35 pm at 7:35 pm #841452tbParticipantBTW Feif un I think if you are not working you are not eligible for food stamps
January 4, 2012 8:00 pm at 8:00 pm #841453sem graduateMemberthe limit is 1180 for a single person per month. If you are earning less than that, go ahead and apply – but that’s 295 a week – unless you really earn min. wage, if you work full time you would not qualify.
January 4, 2012 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #841454miritchkaMemberIf you really need it, then take it. Like others mentioned above, you paid taxes and when you need services from the city/state/gvt, they should provide!
Besides, with all the fraud going on with the programs, (yes in teh Jewish community as well) i like to hear when people who really need it, use my tax money. 🙂
