In Rockland County there are multiple non Jewish supermarkets, Parenthetically The percentage of packaged foods in America that have a cure certification on them is in the 90s. Monsey Like all Frum communities Is expanding by leaps and bounds, making these previously non-orthodox neighborhoods into Frum neighborhoods. That is a beautiful thing what bothers me though is, All the non-Jewish supermarkets close down, almost immediately after the influx begins. No, this is not a rant about anti-Semitism in our neighborhoods, what does bother me is that we are not taking advantage of these well priced national Giants.
Anytime in neighborhood becomes religious the investors by the shopping centers kick out the tenants and put in a fully kosher supermarket. Yes, more is better, but not some more,
If we were to split their shopping trips into two and go to the non-Jewish Chains as well, The grocery bill would halve.
Toilet paper does not need a certification nor do plates cups and spoons. Pasta, chips, drinks and most packaged items have an OU on them in ShopRite as well.
Right now so many people are counting the items in the shopping wagon, if we keep our big box retailers in our neighborhoods, we no longer will need to.

Are kosher markets willing to pay higher rentals than national supermarket chains? If so, it makes sense for the real estate firms to maximize their revenues from these locations. More likely, the national chains make a decision to close because their new customer base won’t purchase the higher margin food items and they cannot survive on low margin paper goods sales

If your Jewish store offers fair prices and fresh merchandize, then you should support him. Otherwise, if you buy kosher items from a chain, the chain will quickly figure it out and bring more kosher products and create a competitive environment. In my area, chains react even to asmall Jewish neighborhood offering products different from a block away.

    1. Which ShopRites closed down?

    2. How are you sure it was the mall owner that terminated their lease rather than the store owner themselves deciding to close the store?

You forgot the most important benefit of Shoprite/Pathmark. For years Pathmark in Monsey used to sell Kosher for Passover products at 50% discount during chol hamoed.

@Ashi, My son in Airmont lives equal distance from Shoprite Ramsey and Hive, My Daughter in Chestnut Ridge has Wegmans within a mile, You have shop and stop in the Nanuet, you have Shoprite in Pearl River West Nyack and Stony Point, Btw the Frum store tend to be cheaper then the national chains on paper products and produce, name me what products tend to be cheaper in the national stores.

Teaneck never had a ShopRite, but there are 2 in neighboring towns (one in Englewood and one in Paramus). Teaneck does have a Stop & Shop. All 3 stores have large kosher sections, including meats.
Here are other Jewish neighborhoods in NJ with a ShopRite:
    Edison (also serves Highland Park)
    Livingston
    Elizabeth
Cherry Hill (I believe it’s one town over)
    Howell (as mentioned above)

I think one of the issues is the type of people who live in each area, and what hechsherim they trust. Yeshivish and MO usually have no issue with the “Big 4” – OU, OK, Kaf-K, and Star-K. Chassidim, on the other hand, usually prefer the heimish hechsherim, and don’t like to rely on the big ones. So in a community like Monsey, which became mostly chassidish over the years, ShopRite can’t provide what people are looking for. In MO communities, or even close to Lakewood, as long as ShopRite carries a selection of Chalav Yisrael products, they can provide for the population there.

I’ve been to Shoprite a few times and was never impressed with their prices compared to the heimishe stores. That being said, not all heimishe stores charge such great prices either. That’s why most of our weekly shopping is done at a certain store, and any fill in items that we need are done at one of the others.

i live in lkwd shoprite in lkwd closed down but their is one in the next town of howell nj
the lkwd costco is full of frum people yet their kosher food products are sparse and they never increased the kosher food section
most frum will stock up on water, paper goods, spices over the counter meds but aside from 2 products from mealmart (large deli packages) and OU lox you,ll end up across the road at bingo or local lkwd kosher supermarkets

@lakewhut there are 70 municipalities in Bergen County, frum are significant in 3 community and a very small number in 3, hardly enough to be called ” predominate”

I think the national trend is that generic grocery stores like ShopRite are not doing well, going the way of other generic offerings – Sears and shopping malls. They tend to carry 100 varieties of the same product to satisfy everyone and it ain’t cheap. Costco, Wegmans, Trader Joe, Walmart that are picking best sellers in each categories and control prices are up.

Shop Rite in Napanoch/Ellenville in the Catskills is closing because it can’t compete with the Walmart down the street. Walmart doesn’t carry very much kosher food, so summer visitors may have difficulty getting what they need before the beginning of Shabbos. The Napanoch/Ellenville area is home to may summer bungalow communities and camps.

I was on the road last week in the boondocks. Walmart had so many kosher items with national hashgachos it was unbelievable. Even mozzarella cheese, bread, etc. If you don’t keep CY or PY, you can save a lot by shopping in regular stores. A can of beans is a can of beans.

Shoprite stores in nj with kosher sections have prepared goods under ou hashgacha at an insanely low price.
