Shmiras HaShabbos effectively reduces more Carbon emissions than Al Gore’s private jet.
So why won’t Bernie Sanders start learning how to keep Shabbos???

AriHaleviRosman, I absolutely disagree. I do not believe in Climate Change or secularism, let me first put that out there. You shouldn’t try to reawaken an issue that was discussed about far-leftists/secular Jews a number of years ago regarding Shabbos and Channukah candles. It was of their opinion that by “wasting” wax, oil, wicks for “no purpose” should be discouraged. Don’t even get them started on continuously running hot-water urns, shabbos lamps, hot-plates, fans, crockpots. So, playing “devils’s advocate” I’m going to say that shabbos actually increases carbon emissions.

The climate changes every day. And has for thousands of years. There’s nothing wrong with that as it is completely normal and how Hashem created the world.

The far left first tried in the 70s and 80s to sell to the world that global cooling would destroy the world. When that petered out as demonstrably false they switched the narrative in the early 90s to that global warming would destroy the world. When that fell flat and hacked emails from these pseudo-scientists exposed it as a hoax they switched to selling their sky-is-falling story to climate change is destroying the world.

The climate has always been changing, and often not for the better (though in all fairness, warm periods appear to be better than cold ones). And if all the Yidden kept Shabbos, the climate would change only for the better (e.g. no rain on Shabbos or Yuntuf, Tishri would never be too warm or too cold, etc.).

I wonder how many of you actually made an effort to try to understand the science of climate change. Guess it is easier to knock things you denied before you got a chance to study the details.

Human driven climate change is not a belief. It is a verified fact which 99% of experts in the field confirm as true based on truckloads of evidence. Why you decide to reject these 99% of scientists but happily accept scientific consensus when it comes to medical care I have no idea.
There is nothing in Jewish halacha, hashkafa or machshava that demands frum Jews to reject this. In fact, there are plenty of mekoros which predate the modern day scientific method which call for humans to look after Hashem’s creation.
Save your protests for the issues which genuinely go against Torah.

Keeping shabbos does not mean that we can phycally destroy the environment given to us. As Hashem transferred the climate function to nature, olam keminhoga nohag, we might not be worthy to create a miracle to change the effect of our actions.

    It is a verified fact

That the climate changes? Okay. What we need to do (if anything) and what will result from our actions or inactions is not fact, it’s theory or hypothesis.

Why you decide to reject these 99% of scientists but happily accept scientific consensus when it comes to medical care I have no idea.

The standards of acceptance are vastly different. For goodness sake, there’s a vaccine (actually multiple) which has been proven to be safe and effective but haven’t yet been approved yet, in the middle of a deadly pandemic, because it hasn’t yet reached their rigorous and strict standards for proof of safety and efficacy.

The cause and long term effects of climate change? Conjecture.

Very high correlation coefficient between climate deniers, covid deniers, mask efficacy deniers and Trumpkopf believers….

I would agree with the predicate of the OP as long as we do so in a manner that doesn’t increase carbon emissions. Cattle raising is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions so when making your chulent, cut back on the red meat and consider chicken, or even better, tofu. Not all agree with the chiyuv to eat red meat on shabbos and you can be mehader shabbos even more by purchasing more expensive seafood.

I had researched a “denier” scientist that Fox news interviewed last year. Turns out he’s a hired gun by the oil industry. His views have also shifted over time: initially he denied climate was changing. Then he admitted it but denied it was induced by humans. Now he says humans do contribute but only a little bit. This guy had also been hired back in the day by the tobacco industry and denied tobacco causes cancer. Since there aren’t a large number of climate change-denying scietists, I would imagine the overwhelming majority of deniers are likewise hired lobbysists.

GH- similar to the correlation between anti trumper and hostility perhaps? I know you’ve said you are a minority here but the alleged few have made this environment so hostile that no thread or subject is safe. Can you PLEASE stop. Please. I’m not trying to be funny, I’m literally begging.

Is this another troll thread where the op disappears after 5 minutes?

Hashem created an ozone layer protecting us from the sun. Carbon emission destroys it.

Syag: I’ll agree 100 percent to avoid any manifestation of my chronic TDS in responding to posts or where the Poster has no political agenda or links to POTUS. The premise here of the OP is that reduction in activities by certain Dem hypocrites that are assur on shabbos is the “answer” the climate change. Sadly, sarcasm will not reduce green house gas emissions nor will the anti-science beliefs of the incumbent’s chassidim. There is definitely a common thread to those who will jeopardize the health and safety by rejecting mainstream science and advocating “wishful” solutions to real problems.

    I hear, fair enough.

Somehow, all weather-concerned initiatives are benefiting bad actors and hurting good actors – limit US oil and price of Russian/Arab oil went up; now US gas is bad, let Europe again get gas from Russia; carbon emission payments going to China. Even weather-friendly nuclear energy is bad.

Please come up with “America first”, or say “Democracies first” climate policy.

For example, boycott Iranian oil; stop burning Russian gas; let China pay for their coal pollution.

GH- thanks, but never mind. I’ve reached a point where it’s really just too uncomfortable. I’m gonna see if I can take a break until people realize destroying people over their political leanings is just a drop lower on the humanity scale than cleaning toilets in public restrooms. Humanity at it’s worst. Unfortunately my workplace is a covid casualty so I don’t really have something else to fill all my hours. Nu nu. It’s a worthy challenge.

Syag: We probably need a national “time out” but thats unlikely to happen. Even 4 years of “boring” would be a welcome respite where you don’t get up in the AM and check your news feed to see if martial law was declared overnight, we bombed Translyvania or another hypocritical Dem politician felt an obligation to attend some high-priced reception or fly off to Cabo with his mishpacha while telling everyone else to lock down in their basement until next Spring.
Look forward to your return to the CR when everything is “back to rnormal” or in time for the 2024 election cycle (whichever comes first).
