Whatever conclusions you have come to regarding a full CD applies as well to a single song.

its been asked countless of times, its a big machlokes and ask YLOR,

for sure if u would buy the CD just for that song then it’s assur to copy it

Would you have bought the song or cd if someone didn’t give it to you?

i definitely wouldnt buy the cd. if they would sell songs seperately, i would probably buy this one song. however, they dont..so my friend sent it to me

The problem with copying is the halachic principle of “taking away business” from the seller.

That’s a pretty blanket statement. According to my Rav, one is allowed to copy a single song as long as they wouldn’t buy the CD otherwise. You have to be very honest with yourself though.

What do you think the “artist/singer” or producer would answer if you asked them the same question? Do you think they would say it is ok if your friend only copied one song for you and one song for someone else? I don’t think so. They might say that you should “borrow” your friend’s cd and listen to the song when you want to, or you and a few friends should chip in and share a cd to listen to the songs you like and maybe each copy one song for yourself. So if there are 10 songs on one CD, 10 friends chip in and each have the right to copy one song. That might make sense and might not break copyright law. I am not sure but I don’t think it is right for one person to buy one cd and make copies of any song for as many others as he wants to. That for sure is breaking copyright laws.

Not sure I announce who he is… Actually, even though I got the heter, I didn’t copy the song because it didn’t feel right to me.
