I saw an article about how they renovated this huge apt complex and now u need an electric key fob to enter the buildings and there are motion sensors in the hallways what can the frum people in these buildings do?
August 2, 2015 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #1094600yehudayonaParticipantMove out?
August 2, 2015 2:48 pm at 2:48 pm #1094601☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe sensor issue should be okay b’dieved. The question here is, can you use a mechanical key as an alternative? If not, it’s a problem, unless there’s a non Jewish doorman (although even then, it’s still not so poshut). Otherwise, you have to wait for a non Jew to walk through and follow him.

August 2, 2015 5:03 pm at 5:03 pm #1094604MammeleParticipantThere are many hotels that are specifically Shabbos friendly. It boggles the mind why a development with existing shomer Shabbos tenants should be so insensitive.
They’re suing the landlord, American style. Hopefully this was used as a last resort and should do the trick.

August 2, 2015 10:20 pm at 10:20 pm #1094607zahavasdadParticipantLefrak City is an apartment complex in Rego park queens. There are alot of Russian jews who live there.
August 3, 2015 2:37 am at 2:37 am #1094608yehudayonaParticipantI just read the article in the NY Daily News. The management blames the Feds, claiming that the key fob system “was installed in compliance with federal Department of Housing and Community Renewal rules and regulations.” What I don’t get is that the Jewish residents aren’t just asking for a door with a manual key, they’re also asking for a Shabbos elevator, which apparently they didn’t have before.
August 3, 2015 11:46 am at 11:46 am #1094609☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe sensors apparently turn on lights in the hallways, so are actually a problem.
There are also sensors which turn on the lights in the stairwells, which might explain why a Shabbos elevator would be requested. Using a Shabbos elevator is not simple either.

It might do to remember that not everyone is from New York.
It might also do to remember that not even all New Yorkers know where all the neighborhoods are. I heard of Lefrak City, and knew that it was somewhere in the city, but aside from knowing it’s not in Manhattan, I couldn’t have placed it on a map either.

sometimes I see headlines on the front page or in the jewish papers that mention cities/communities but i have no idea what state they are in. i guess they figure everyone already knows!
and for the record, when i saw the title, i thought lefrak sounded hebrew and that it was in israel somewhere.
