October 18, 2012 2:12 pm at 2:12 pm #900804HS GirlParticipantGirls, any comments on this?
October 18, 2012 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm #900805happym19MemberThat sounds amazing! 🙂 Do you have more information on how to buy a ticket for the raffle?
October 21, 2012 11:15 pm at 11:15 pm #900808YW Moderator-42ModeratorSo you have a one in a few thousand chance to get free seminary, only one person can win so don’t count on this as if YOU are going to be the winner. It is a raffle supporting a tzedaka like any other. If you want to use your masser money to give tzedaka to this particular institution, kol hakavod. Otherwise, support your local tzedakas or whatever you would normally put your maaser towards
October 21, 2012 11:35 pm at 11:35 pm #900809trak443Participanti work for a mosad. in most cases (except for maybe oorah) any mosad would be LUCKY to have a “few thousand” people buying tickets….. the odds are considerably better than that.
October 21, 2012 11:54 pm at 11:54 pm #900810YW Moderator-42ModeratorOk, so a few hundred. Though depending on how much you are selling single and multiple tickets for, it could very well be over 1,000.
But either way, it’s still a long shot. This thread makes it sound like this is some awesome idea to raffle off a free year in seminary. I’m just pointing out that this has nothing to do with seminary, it is a raffle with a cash value to it, other institutions raffle off “a dining room set”,”an apartment in Israel”, $25,000, $100,000… It’s all the same thing, an incentive to give tzedaka. Give it as t2daka, not because you think you will win.
If you have a class of 50 Beis Yaakov 12th graders and you raffle it off among them – that’s another story.
October 22, 2012 12:00 am at 12:00 am #900811YW Moderator-42ModeratorAt $36 per ticket with an $18,000 prize, they have to sell at least 500 tickets to break even. And that’s if people buy the smallest package, if some of those 500 come from the bigger ticket packages they have to sell more than 500.
October 22, 2012 12:21 am at 12:21 am #900812dhl144MemberYW Moderator-42- WOW you are so negative…whats wrong with you? having a rough day? brighten up!! What in the world do u have against this raffle or the odds of winning? it sounds like u purchased a ticket and you are trying to discourage other ppl from buying bc u feel YOUR chances of winning are slim…
October 22, 2012 12:32 am at 12:32 am #900813trak443Participant1 in 500, 1 in 750, even 1 in 1000… those are pretty good odds… and yes, you are supporting a mosad also…
October 22, 2012 5:41 am at 5:41 am #900814YW Moderator-42ModeratorSorry, I’m just annoyed by people’s attitude toward raffles as if they really think they are going to win. I have no problem with people giving to mosdos and even buying a slight chance of winning something in the process, but be realistic and give for the sake of tzedaka.
October 22, 2012 11:24 am at 11:24 am #900815morahmomParticipantIrrespective of the odds, something tells me that this is going to be a record-breaking raffle in terms of participation.
Signed by someone with a daughter in Seminary this year…

October 22, 2012 1:59 pm at 1:59 pm #900817HS GirlParticipantYeah Moderator what is the issue? you must not be the winning type!
October 22, 2012 2:00 pm at 2:00 pm #900818HS GirlParticipanthere you have the chance to support a mosad and also a chance for to win a raffle which is not just a free vacation trip — it is a very economical investment for many of us that the costs of seminary is really high.
October 22, 2012 10:38 pm at 10:38 pm #900819candy613Memberdoesn’t matter what the odds are. It only takes one to win, and whoever is meant to win will win no matter how many tickets she buys or how many other people have bought tickets.
October 23, 2012 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #900820HS GirlParticipanttrue but here the more you spend the more you win!
October 23, 2012 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #900821zahavasdadParticipantBTW if you win, you have to pay TAX on the Prize.
If you win some cheap prize at a chinese auction like a bunch of museum admissions, I wouldnt worry about the tax, But this prize has significant value and you will be responsible to report the prize as income.
It might be worth $20K-$30K and you will owe state and Federal tax on it.
October 23, 2012 10:39 pm at 10:39 pm #900822Veltz MeshugenerMembertrak 443: Technically, the odds would be good if the chance of winning gave you greater value than the money you’re spending. If it’s a 1/2 chance and you spent $50k for it, the odds wouldn’t be good. Basically, if the raffle holder is breaking even, your odds are not “good”.
October 24, 2012 1:25 am at 1:25 am #900823MediumThinkerMemberTechnically, one can have good odds with the tzedakah still making money. The scenario would be, an individual buys a high volume of tickets for a cheaper price, with the rest of the ticket holders buying single tickets at a higher price. The value of the return of each ticket may be lower than the individual ticket price but higher than the price paid for each ticket when bought in bulk.
October 24, 2012 2:04 am at 2:04 am #900824happym19MemberDoes anyone know how to buy a raffle ticket? 🙂
October 24, 2012 3:05 am at 3:05 am #900825dhl144Memberyes there is a link someone posted the link on like 3rd or 4th answer to this post
October 24, 2012 1:28 pm at 1:28 pm #900826zahavasdadParticipantWhat is truly sad about this , Girls feel almost entitled to go to Seminary for a year and many Parents cannot afford the $20K-$30K cost of this and the girls feel left out especially if many of their friends are going.
They then put their hopes on a raffle ticket that they can win the trip as this may be their only way of going.
October 24, 2012 5:58 pm at 5:58 pm #900828HS GirlParticipantThe raffle is advertise on yeshivaworld for those who would like to enter.
October 25, 2012 1:43 am at 1:43 am #900829MediumThinkerMemberzahavasdad-Can’t that be said about any raffle?
October 25, 2012 8:16 pm at 8:16 pm #900830Princess15Memberim deff getting some tickets! even if there is a slight chance of me winning.
October 26, 2012 2:21 pm at 2:21 pm #900831HS GirlParticipantGo for it Princess15, I like your attitude. There is an on the right side of the YW homepage
