its so disturbing that everyone HAS TO go to E”Y for sem. why cant anyone encourage american seminaries like Yavne, By intensive…and others.
October 21, 2012 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #910560It’s a fad. There is no real reason why everyone or most girls should go to EY for sem.
October 21, 2012 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #910561WIYMemberBecause we richies like forcing other people to go into debt to have to keep up with us. That’s how we do things.
October 22, 2012 12:47 am at 12:47 am #910562chacha5Memberya we realized
October 22, 2012 12:50 am at 12:50 am #910563chacha5MemberATTN “non richies” : this year we are changing the fad and going to american seminaries!!!!
October 22, 2012 12:56 am at 12:56 am #910564dhl144Memberomg social status is not the only thing to care about in this world!! I used to be so sucked into it thank GOD im done with that…
SOme1 needs to start a topic about social status!
October 22, 2012 1:16 am at 1:16 am #910565CRuzerParticipantDo all guys still have to go to E”Y for yeshiva?
October 22, 2012 1:23 am at 1:23 am #910566WIYMemberChacha5
Go ahead see if you can convince enough girls to stay.
October 22, 2012 1:29 am at 1:29 am #910567vochindikMemberCRuzer: It is a different issue for guys, who it can be more beneficial too due to the potentially greater ability of Limud Torah in E”Y.
October 22, 2012 1:42 am at 1:42 am #910568ImaofthreeParticipantNot everyone can afford to go to seminary in Israel and there are plenty of people that send their daughters to local seminaries.
October 22, 2012 3:17 am at 3:17 am #910569OneOfManyParticipantI don’t know where you live, but just so you know in NY the “fad” has died down to a large extent. I went to a big Bais Yaakov in Brooklyn and only twenty people went to E”Y out of my entire grade. In fact, there was a lot of peer pressure to stay back.
October 22, 2012 5:09 am at 5:09 am #910570takahmamashParticipantits so disturbing that everyone HAS TO go to E”Y
What’s really disturbing is that everyone isn’t living in E”Y already.
October 22, 2012 10:27 am at 10:27 am #910571ImaofthreeParticipant“What’s really disturbing is that everyone isn’t living in E”Y already.”
Yes, we need moshiach to come already. But we are discussing seminary in Israel, not living in Israel.
October 22, 2012 10:36 pm at 10:36 pm #910572candy613MemberIt is ok to say that it is hard that you are feeling forced to send your daughter to Eretz Yisrael for seminary. It is ok to bring in ideas in The US IT IS NOT OK TO SAY THAT GIRLS SHOULD NOT GO TO SEMINARY IN ERETZ YISRAEL. There is nothing in the world that can compare to spending a year in Eretz Yisrael. Although there are great seminaries here and yes, maybe more girls should start going if their parents cant afford seminary in Eretz Yisrael but there is something that the enviroment there does for someone that no where here can accomplish no matter how special and incredible the place. Sorry….
October 23, 2012 2:23 am at 2:23 am #910573chacha5Membercandy613 i totally get what your saying, but i wasnt sugesting that girls shouldnt go to seminary in eretz yisroel i just think that girls shouldnt be preasured to go to eretz yisroel when their parents cant afford, but rather people should actually encourage girls who’s parents cant afford sem in E”y to go to sem in america as apposed to making parents go into debt over sem.
October 23, 2012 4:08 am at 4:08 am #910574candy613Memberchacha5 you are very right! I agree with you very much! I think that concept has gotten better especially this year! I come from a place where it is unheard of not to go to seminary in Eretz Yisrael and this year I was surprised to hear that quite a bunch didn’t! so I guess every person needs to weigh for themselves if it is something they can do or if they need to settle on somewhere here. What is happening is crazy… I agree.
October 23, 2012 4:18 am at 4:18 am #910576There is no real reason the vast majority of girls cannot go to seminary in America rather than in EY. They would get the same thing here as there.
October 23, 2012 6:18 am at 6:18 am #910577zeena.kastaMemberhow are dorms in Israel? What are the dorms of Ateres, Meohr and Darchei Binah like?
October 23, 2012 7:10 am at 7:10 am #910578tahiniMemberCandy613 made a great point, a year in Eretz Yisrael is incomparable, and leaves a lasting impression. If it is too expensive, perhaps American sems organise trips out there so some young women can experience Israel if they have not done so before.
Parents should not be pressurised into paying for any sort of fad, a year abroad, fancy car or over the top wedding, they also need to show unity in number and not pressurise each other into comparing simchas and spending. It does happen and not just among kids!!
October 23, 2012 1:48 pm at 1:48 pm #910579MimkMemberYou can NOT compare a girl that went to seminary to a girl that didnt. Everyone should try there hardest to send their child to seminary, the results are life transforming. Their are many ways to get scholarships paying for most of the cost. For example, SAT’s.
October 24, 2012 1:32 am at 1:32 am #910580MediumThinkerMembercandy613. As a boy I have many friends whose year in Israel caused more spiritual negatives than positives. I could hypothesize that it was a lack of supervision, an independence, whatever it does not matter. The point is that every individual has to make a wise, guided decision and your jingoist Utopian view limits people from making those important decisions. In my personal opinion, sometimes more can be gained from choosing to make those decisions than from living in Eretz Yisroel for a year.
October 24, 2012 11:30 pm at 11:30 pm #910581venahapoich HuMemberwhat happened to good old gateshead?
October 25, 2012 3:02 am at 3:02 am #910582chacha5Memberand what happened to good old yavneh sem in cleveland. there down to a few girls this year while 4 years ago they had 30 and before that they had up to 60 and 70…..I guess now the new sem in NY (v’ata lis) is an alternative. I heard amazing things about it from girls there this year.
October 25, 2012 3:27 am at 3:27 am #910583candy613MemberYeah I heard great things about that one too!!! And also Bnos Chaim in Lakewood!!!
October 25, 2012 3:37 am at 3:37 am #910584chacha5Memberreally?! whats it like? is it academic at all, and do they even have a dorm for out of towners?
October 25, 2012 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm #910585Princess15Memberhey hey, who ever said that u have to go to E”y?? so not true i know plenty of girls who have gone to america, gatestead and there is nothing wrong with that, there just happens to be more sems in E”y.

December 5, 2012 1:54 am at 1:54 am #910586cleveMemberLooks like Yavne Sem is rebuilding. They made open houses in ny and lakewood. They announced that there will probably be a trip to E.Y. in the middle of the year for a few weeks, chaperoned and at no extra tuition cost (besides for a group rate ticket). Sounds worth exploring if you’re staying in the US.
December 5, 2012 3:29 am at 3:29 am #910587batsevenParticipantwhen my sis was sem age abt 8 years ago, her whole grade went 2 israel except 2 girls. This past year, only 20 girls out of 65 in the grade went to israel.
so the fad is dying down- im glad
December 5, 2012 3:36 am at 3:36 am #910588batsevenParticipantfyi Gateshead New is the most amazing place on the planet earth
December 5, 2012 12:38 pm at 12:38 pm #910589caleeforniaMemberZeena: ateres’s dorms are just dorms, not too fancy, not too bad. Meohr’s are very nice. Darchei binah’s are more like apartments, and can also be nice–depends a lot on if you’re with girls who like to keep everything clean and neat or not, because there are a lot of kitchens which can get messy if you don’t take care.
