What are some ideas to make Sipur Yetzias Mirztayim at the Seder both meaningful and informative for children (especially older children) who already know Sipur Yetzias Mitzrayim quite well from school and from previous Sedarim?

My Rebbe, R’ Bender, says that one should make the Seder exciting for children. He says that R’ Reuvein Grozovsky used to act out the story, and especially by the makkos, he would literally get down on the floor to entertain the children by showing what the Egyptians had to deal with. R’ Bender does the same for his family (when his children were young for them, and now, for his grandchildren.)

We purchased a set of “Haggadahs for Teens” several years ago at Eichlers for our grandchildren (and the rest of us) and it has been a great invea stments.
It is a fun and captivating haggadah, that make the Seder more meaningful and memorable for the kids. Also, let them get up and walk around a bit if they feel the need to do so. It can be an “eternity” from “kadesh” to “al achilas matzah” if you are a hungary teen.

You can talk about how today’s Bnei Torah need a yeshua from the shmad of the Zionist State.

DaMoshe: If Rabbi Bender is “your rebbe”, why aren’t you following his Chareidi shittas, instead of being Modern Orthodox?

rav shach said the reason the steipler was zocheh to have R’ Chaim while his sons went the way they did was because the steipler used to act out the parsha every week

Joe, I have a very close relationship with R’ Bender, and communicate with him regularly. Believe me, he knows how I live my life, and he has no problems with it. R’ Bender is one of the few Gedolim today who truly believe in chanoch l’naar al pi darko, and he recognizes that the way he lives is not the best for everyone else. He encouraged me to go to college. As I said, he is well aware of pretty much everything I do. I take any advice he gives me very seriously.
Maybe he doesn’t have the same issues with Modern Orthodoxy that you do, and recognizes that it’s a perfectly fine derech of Judaism? I happen to personally know guys from Darchei whom he encouraged to go to YU for college. What do you say to that?

DaMoshe: It was a question, not a statement. I know guys who Rav Shteinman encouraged to go to YCT; because he knew the alternative was they’d go to HUC.

For the week before Pesach I rent my kids out to a construction company. They spend 12 hours a day building brick buildings.
As an added bonus the money I’m paid for my kids work covers my Pesach expenses.

Ujm and Damoshe (I know you didn’t start it)- please keep the Zionist, Modox, Charedi, Tzahal debate off this thread. There are plenty of other places to hash it out. I asked a serious question completely unrelated to that, and I would prefer not to get off topic. If you can’t address the question appropriately, please stay silent. Thank you.

    Joseph,

Absolutely, since we were enslaved in Mitzrayim due to Zionism, right?

The best idea is to stick to the Haggadah

    #2384401

Damoshe, thanks for this. Simcha, what they say is relevant – there are 3 types of slavery – to non-Jews, to Jews, and to yourself. Some people enslave themselves to their pre-fixed ideas and do not respond even to information that comes from the sources they trust.

Kuvult, great idea. Sounds like your construction company pays well.

Look at writings by R Sacks. He tends to make historical and philosophical connections that can help expand conversation to bigger topics and show kids how Hagada relates to our lives.

    Stick to the Haggadah

kako, if it were for you, R Akiva would not have been able to add his opinion to Hagadah, and probably others too.

Every year I mention the malbim’s introduction and how he shows that the structure of the seder/haggadah is tied into the pasuk of ‘vhigadata l’vincha’
It’s so basic it should be taught in yeshiva but it’s not and very few people seem to know it
the malbim comes in english now and it is the introduction. Its worth buying just for that
