My friend’s kid, is having a spine fusion for scoliosis. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any ideas or suggestions, would be great, he is a bit nervous.

It’s all in Hashem’s hands!!

January 2, 2011 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm #731774Midwest2ParticipantI second Health – I know someone whose kid had surgery and it was no picnic. Get second and third opinions on: A) is the surgery really necessary or are there alternative treatments such as physical therapy, etc.? B) Double and triple check the surgeon. Have they been sued for malpractice? Do they have lots of experience doing this specific kind of surgery? Can you talk to someone who’s had that operation from that surgeon?
Suffering oneself isn’t pleasant. Ch’v watching one’s child suffer as a result of one’s own oversight would be terrible.

Ask ECHO or MRA if they heard of your surgeon and what kind of reputation he has.If all agree on the surgery, get brochos from tzadikim in the most specific wording you dare to ask for,and you will then have some peace of mind…as you take out your own tehilim. Not easy…
May the child have a refuah shelayma.

January 3, 2011 11:47 am at 11:47 am #731779eclipseMemberSee the last two suggestions in my post. Also books on Emunah.
When my mother was very sick and people were calling us kids with this cure and that cure,we didn’t know what to try first, etc.
My life changed when I received Chovos Halevovos in English RANDOMLY in the mail one day.
I opened up RANDOMLY to a page which said Hashem once used a POISONOUS BRANCH to make the waters of a bitter river sweet…from which we learn that even a “mistakenly chosen” cure can bring about an actual refuah–if Hashem wills it to be.
As long as a person is making carefully considered choices,he can be zoche TO A COMPLETE REFUAH.

January 3, 2011 4:02 pm at 4:02 pm #731781cherrybimParticipantHow old is the child?
Get a second opinion from an ECHO physician as was suggested; surgeries can be postponed.
I have two children with scoliosis and spine fusion is a very last resort. Another alternative is a brace; very uncomfortable but it works.
Scoliosis in inherited from one of the parents; how did the parent manage?
January 6, 2011 4:49 am at 4:49 am #731785mra01385ParticipantI have very bad scoliosis so I actually had 2 spinal fusions, and finally I had a 10 hour surgery about 14 1/2 yrs ago where Dr. Ohenba Boachie who is tops in his field inserted rods into my back in Hospital for Special Surgery that’s located next to Cornell University in uptown manhattan on the east side. Baruch Hashem everything went well and I recovered pretty quickly! But these surgeries are no easy picknick and there is always a risk for paralysis because the spinal cord is right there. So make sure that your doctor knows what he is doing. Get many brachos, daven and say lots of tehillim that everything should should go well, and imyh it will!
January 25, 2011 10:01 pm at 10:01 pm #731786geshmocksterMemberThe child B”H had the surgery with almost 100% perfect correction, and recovering quickly. Thanks to all those who gave advice, and especially to those who davened.
