i have to write a school paper and was hoping i could get some help from the very knowledgeable and opinionate people who hang aroung this cr. the paper is on martin luther king’s “i have a dream speech” and the topic is – has his dream been fulfilled or not? any ideas? for both sides? please!
December 23, 2008 1:11 am at 1:11 am #630748JosephParticipantJust write he was a shikker.
December 23, 2008 1:55 am at 1:55 am #630749tzippiMemberKeepinEntertained, since some of us would like you to get an A, here are some starters:
List specific phrases from the speech.
Now what does your gut tell you? Based on what?
That based on what is very important. I don’t think this has a right answer, that is, has the dream been fulfilled or not. Yes or no would be correct but you’ll have to have facts to base it on. So the opinions of people here will not be enough for you. You’ll need why’s from them and you better fact check EVERYTHING anyone here mentions to back up their thesis.
Assuming you have a decent history book, read the chapters on or check the index for references to African American history. Focus on important events, etc. of the last 40 years and see how they fit into the specific phrases you’ve written down.
OK, I hope I started you off. Good luck!
(BTW, you will need more facts for a yes than the fact that our president elect is African American.)
December 23, 2008 2:10 am at 2:10 am #630750JosephParticipantSome more facts about him:
In summation:
a philanderer, a drunk, a liar, a plagiarist, and a cheater
December 23, 2008 3:26 am at 3:26 am #630751oomisParticipantObama was elected President of the USA – what do you think????? (I am being slightly facetious).
December 23, 2008 4:13 am at 4:13 am #630752think613MemberJoseph,
The assignment does not call for an analysis of King’s character.
Keepin,
This is a critical thinking assignment. It doesn’t matter whether you say yes or no, just make sure to support your answer by bringing points from the speech and examples of how they have or haven’t been fulfilled.

What grade are you writing this paper for, and how long does it have to be? I might be able to direct you towards reading material, or even help you with your thesis
December 23, 2008 6:40 am at 6:40 am #630754asdfghjklParticipantobama was elected us president=unfortinatly his grand dream came true!!!
talk about how the blacks started as slaves & in 2009 obama a black will be president!!! good luck with the paper!!!
December 23, 2008 6:44 am at 6:44 am #630755KeepinEntertainedMembertohighschoolguy, writing it for touro college, compI class…any material will be of great help! and thanks to everyone else! apprec it!
December 23, 2008 7:43 am at 7:43 am #630756yankdownunderMemberKeepinEntertained-If you want to do well on your paper, the first step is to get off line so you can start doing your homework. Start Go ogling about the life of Martin Luther King. First write a small biographical sketch about the life of MLK from his beginning up to the time when he marched with thousands of Blacks to the Rotunda in Washington DC. This was the Summer of 1963. Then analyze his speech to see if his dream was fulfilled or not. Lastly develop a time line from 1963 to the present, reflecting on the contribution of Blacks who were his students.
December 23, 2008 9:55 am at 9:55 am #630757Mrs. BeautifulMemberI cant imagine that anyone would say his dream has not been fulfilled. Check out all the African Amricans that hold government positions. Rice etc…Nevermind our future president that won by a landslide, over an experienced…. Speak about the different pple that were punished for even the slightest discrimination. I would say end it, Be careful what u wish for, it may just come true!
December 23, 2008 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm #630758tzippiMemberMrs. Beautiful, good points about the important positions held by African Americans. But on the minus side, and KeepinE, you will have to tread carefully but this is college level so you can’t skirt around this, you will have to discuss the social ills the black community is facing – lack of family structure, the proportion of black men in jail, etc.
Note to the people who aren’t taking this thread seriously: please don’t go off on a tangent on the ills. Thanks!
December 23, 2008 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm #630759myshadowMemberYou might want to go through a timeline from then until now,
But you can also base it on the current election, how he still had opposition because he is black and how he overcame that.
You can also divide up the speech and expound on which parts of the dream got fulfilled or not ex: black kids and white kids playing together…
December 23, 2008 3:49 pm at 3:49 pm #630760squeakParticipantIf you want to quote actual lines from his speech, you will need to pay royalties to the King Foundation. They do not allow anyone to print or play the speech without explicit permission. Of course, if you are rich or elite, it will be easy for you to gain access to the material.
December 23, 2008 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm #630761tzippiMemberThere are the achievements of the individual, the theoretical opportunities for individuals and the community as a whole, and the reality of the social construct now. Don’t know if that’s within the purview of your paper, but this may help give you an outline.
December 23, 2008 6:51 pm at 6:51 pm #630762WolfishMusingsParticipantIf you want to quote actual lines from his speech, you will need to pay royalties to the King Foundation.
No you don’t. Using excerpts in an academic paper clearly falls in the context of fair use.

December 23, 2008 8:55 pm at 8:55 pm #630765squeakParticipantwe haven’t heard from ulisis in a while. What adventures were you having in your long absence this time?
December 24, 2008 2:10 am at 2:10 am #630767TOHIGHSCHOOLGUYMemberHi … while I would love to give you actual details, I am not as versed in the life of MLKJ as I would like … that being said however, why don’t you construct your essay like this?
Paragraph 1:
Hook – contraversial (sorry for spelling) or interesting quote from Him
Thesis – ask question, and answer it in your arguments
arguments (summarized) – points that he wanted, and did it come true … no … in what way
Remaining paragrahs – your arguments expanded
some possibilities: has his dream been carried too far?
have his followers corrupted his dream
have the blacks corrupted it with affirmitave action etc.
what do you think?
December 24, 2008 2:36 am at 2:36 am #630768asdfghjklParticipantbrooklyn19: lol good eye there!!!!

December 24, 2008 3:31 pm at 3:31 pm #630770ModernGuyParticipantWhatever your personal feelings are about him, we as orthodox Jews owe a lot of our freedom and liberty to the cause he fought for, so be careful before you condemn the man.
December 24, 2008 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #630771TOHIGHSCHOOLGUYMemberKeepinEntertained, no problem
I don’t know how this could be accomplished, but if you don’t mind, and our wonderful moderators can do this somehow, I would be interested to see it when you are done
December 24, 2008 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #630772abcdParticipantKeepin- Do you have Prof. Marvin for this class?
December 24, 2008 9:35 pm at 9:35 pm #630773notpashutMemberJust looked at this thread,
WOW Joseph! Looks like your writing your comments to be “mekayeim” the screen name of the mechadesh of the thread. 🙂
BTW, I believe he had a number of illigitimate children as well. King, that is.
December 28, 2008 3:03 am at 3:03 am #630774havesomeseichelMemberDepending on who is your teacher, he or she might have a point of view that he wants you to write about. IE: if your teacher is liberal, black, democrat, a fan of the ACLU/NAACP, or agrees with Al Sharpton- then write that there is still racism today. but, if your teacher allows freedom of the press, , a republican/conservative, or allows students to express their political views freely and without being criticized then right what you want. But, as was said before- Obama will be the 44th president and I think there is no inequality in public universities/jobs (except to whites perhaps…) Good luck on your report!
December 29, 2008 9:59 pm at 9:59 pm #630775enlightenedjewMemberJoseph- That is a disgusting statement to have made. Show the context of your quotes. Additionally, look @ wikipedia.com’s entry on Martin Luther King, scroll down and read about his relationship with the FBI. I don’t think King was a saint, but he does not deserve that flippant remark.
On a perhaps related note, asdfghjkl, that too was a sick comment to make. I am SICK and TIRED of the racism displayed by the frum community and am embarrassed by the behavior of my brethren – the derogatory term “shvartza” (no, I don’t care that it means “black” literally – it’s usage is derogatory) should have no place whatsoever in a Jew’s lexicon and its casual, flippant use is hurtful to the Creator’s ears (kaveyachol) and is a massive chillul H”. Racism is one of the most vile, hypocritical beliefs a Jew can harbor, given our ‘unique’ history. Anyone recall the reason of why we don’t say full Hallel later during Pesach?
Having gotten that off my chest, KeepinEntertained, if you go to wikipedia.com, they usually have sources in footnotes at the end, you could use those as a springboard for research.
December 29, 2008 11:36 pm at 11:36 pm #630776brooklyn19Participantbtw just as a side point –
when you’re writing a paper (if you have a decent professor) it’s usually better to take the less popular side of an argument. that is, as long as you has sufficient information to properly back up your stand. i think it’s because professors get bored of marking papers and love to read something a little different.
one thing: if you’re in a frum college and your professor is a frum “in a box” person (which i doubt if it’s an english class) then don’t dare!
December 30, 2008 1:26 am at 1:26 am #630777JosephParticipantBe bold and state the truth. And the truth of the shikker King is that he was a philanderer, a drunk, a liar, a plagiarist, and a cheater.
January 5, 2009 3:29 am at 3:29 am #630778havesomeseichelMemberbrooklyn 19 and all those in school- be very careful when stating the “not so popular side of the argument”- some teachers only want a spit-back of their political views. If you dare to think anything else, or C”V write it- they fail you. I have known people who’s grades were lowered because they did not follow the teacher’s mantra that “white men are to blame for all problems, Bush=devil, and that the Jews caused 9/11 or other horrific events”….
January 5, 2009 3:38 am at 3:38 am #630779outoftownerMemberIs this turning into the “homework helpline”…?

January 5, 2009 3:58 am at 3:58 am #630782asdfghjklParticipantsqueak: what your highest level of education you completed????
January 5, 2009 4:27 am at 4:27 am #630783brooklyn19Participantyeah i know. that’s why i said it depends on your teacher. most normal teacher prefer original papers. for the cookie-cutter teachers you gotta submit cookie-cutter work, though. a lot easier, but a lot more boring.

You are free to believe that I am a 15 year old boy who hasn’t even completed high school, if you wish. Or whatever else you want to believe.
Just for the record, when I said to send me all the hard questions I meant it as a joke. You know, mock bragging. I didn’t realize when I made my next post that it would seem snotty (until asdf pointed it out). My apologies. And that brag should still not be taken seriously even by those who choose to believe me. I don’t have a brklyn19 self-image. 😉
