I had a run in with a senior member of my school’s administration after she caught me sitting on the table part of a bench. (Know what I mean? That sounds wrong…)
Anyways, I need to write a composition on why I made the decision to sit on the table instead of the bench… Like, help? No idea what to write! If anyone can help me with that, that would be really awesome.
Also, I need a source for why it’s wrong to sit on a table. Ugh.
June 11, 2015 5:53 pm at 5:53 pm #1086498popa_bar_abbaParticipantThat is so stupid. Your school administrator is a moron.
Anyway, there are chazal by when the stoned zecharia in the beis hamikdosh, that it happened because he talked to them “me’al la’am”, that is, that he in some respects talked down to them and that’s why they weren’t mekabel.
So you should say that you shouldn’t sit on the table because it might give an impression that you consider yourself meial laam, and would diminish your ability to give tochacha to your classmates and to school administrators.
I think that should serve them right.

June 11, 2015 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #1086500chofetzchaimrecruitMemberperhaps you could tell ur admistrator that you wanted a change of scenery
i am not sure which parsha but it says that a table is compared to a mezbeach thats why there is salt on the table also why our not supposed to sit on a table
June 11, 2015 6:41 pm at 6:41 pm #1086501popa_bar_abbaParticipantis that also why you are not supposed to eat off a table (because you’d never eat off the mizbeach)
June 11, 2015 6:44 pm at 6:44 pm #1086502Letakein GirlParticipantLol Popa and RY.
It’s not considered cheating- I’m researching this topic so that i can grow from this experience, see? 🙂
Thanks for the help, CCR! Does anyone have the exact location of the ????? ???? ????? thing? Is it an outright prohibition, or just not the right thing to do?
June 11, 2015 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #1086503apushatayidParticipant“location of the ????? ???? ????? thing”
It comes from a gemara in brachos daf nun heh. It is brought down in halacha in hilchos betzias hapas, siman kuf samech zayin sif heh (see mishna brura sif kattan lamed, lamed alef and lamed beis).
June 11, 2015 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #1086504Letakein GirlParticipantThank you so much APY! It’s so nice of you to check that up for me… So it’s an outright Halacha that one may not sit on a table? I always thought that it was a chumra…
June 11, 2015 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm #1086505MDGParticipant“I need to write a composition on why I made the decision to sit on the table instead of the bench.”
If you are not tall, you can write how you always felt looked down upon and no one understands the discrimination. You needed to raise yourself, literally, to improve your self image.

It does not actually say not to sit on a table.
June 11, 2015 7:45 pm at 7:45 pm #1086507apushatayidParticipant“So it’s an outright Halacha that one may not sit on a table?”
I didnt say that, I hope I didnt imply thats what the shulchan aruch says. He talks about dipping bread in salt and discusses the idea of ????? ???? ?????. I just gave you sources to review and perhaps take from it why it would be improper to sit on a table.
While I’m a nice guy, I didnt “look it up”, I knew it was there since I recently learned this siman.
June 11, 2015 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #1086508JosephParticipantWhen did you become a nice guy? 🙂

Approximately 20 minutes ago.
June 12, 2015 7:19 am at 7:19 am #1086510Shopping613 ðŸŒParticipantHehe, we have that rule to. Whenever the prin walks outside, everyone jumps off the tables quickly. It’s sorta cool.
Explain very nicely that it was more comfortable on the table, and you wanted to swing your legs higher! 😉

June 14, 2015 12:32 pm at 12:32 pm #1086514tirtzaParticipantI’m quite surpised that no one has a clue.
A shulchan is a ” mini-mazbeach.”
The meals we eat and the brachot we say are like offerings on the mizbeach.
Don’t feel too bad, I once had a similar experience when I was a rather young mother, I put one of the children I was holding on the table and a guest, who happened to be a very assimilated Jew mentioned to me that he was surprised to see that I, a religious Jew, would show such disregard.
I quickly, took the kid off the table and was even more embarrassed because of the source of the criticism.
I have not forgotten, to this day, the lesson.
Be thankful that the source of criticism was from someone who wants to help you grow and not from a source that for whom it is a source of derision.
Good Luck with your essay.

I guess the crazy ones first caught my eye.
