I heard a mussar shmuz today and the point was that we have to daven that Hashem write us a good gezar din because everything that will happen this coming year will be written up on Rosh Hoshana. This past year we had so many tragedies (all that were written up last Rosh Hoshana) that this year we should daven harder for a better gezar din for Klal Yisroel. Hashem sent us so many messages this year. Lets get the message.
To drive the point home I listed some of the tragedies R”L that we had this year that we have to daven this year we don’t have again.
The petira of 3 Gedolei Hador all niftar in a span of 2 weeks:
Rav Yitzchok Dov Koppelman
Rav Chaim Stein
Rav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz
The tragic stabbing of:
Rav Elazar Abuchatzeira HY’D
The kidnapping and brutal murder of:
Leiby Kletzky HY’D
The 3 deaths related from Hurricane Irene:
Moshe Yosef Reichenberg
Chaim Reuven Dovid Herbst

Why do we need to lein on Rosh Hashona the last shtikel in parshas VaYeira? We have enough pesukim with the story of Akeiidas Yitzchok to cover the required aliyos! Why read all the names of relatives of Avrohom? So Rash”i says it’s all just to mention Rivka. But what does that portion have to do with R”H?? What possible hisoirerus can we gain from these names?
He says, imagine you are given permission to be able to look in this year’s Sefer HaChaim! So you nervously flip through it, page after page, with shaking hands, your eyes frightfully scanning all the names, and muttering….c’mon where is it, where’s my name….??? Whew, you finally find it, you’re in the there. imagine the RELEIF, the sweat, the tension, your beating heart etc.
..and what if you weren’t in there, C”V,…….?
If you look at the pesukim, says R’Shwab, there’s one outstanding omission! There’s a name missing!?
Lavan’s name is not there! But he was Rivks’s brother?? Why isn’t he included in the family list? Says R’ Shwab, because he was a rasha! And therefore didn’t DESERVE his name to be included and mentioned (at that time) in the torah!
May we all be zoiche to be written in Sefer HaChayim L’Toiva!!
