I have been having a roach problem lately. I don’t know if I’m infested but have been finding about 1 every other day for past 2 weeks. Being that I am TERRIFIED of bugs (and it’s just disgusting), I called my landlord (who lives in the same house) and asked if he could get an exterminator. Like everything else, he wants to try to take of the problem on his own.
Is this fair? Or is a landlord supposed to get an exterminator right away?

I had a roach problem in my (then) apartment on the top floor of a two family house) about 25 years ago. my landlords did not bring in an exterminator, and it is most probable that the roach problem originated in their apartment. They used to keep paper shopping bags from the local supermarket, and I believe the egss were in those bags, and hatched. They also painted their apartment, so everything came up to us. I had never had a roach problem prior to this.
In any event, I put out about a dozen roach motels all over the place, and also sprinkled Boric Acid along the walls, especially in the kitchen and bathroom (please note: if you have small kids, BA is toxic). The problem disappeared within a week, but I couldn’t function in my apartment,as I was so grossed out. I totally empathize with you.

January 19, 2011 5:27 pm at 5:27 pm #729940HealthParticipantesss -Since your name is Esss, I’ll tell you what some people who were neighbors did. They Essed them -fried of course. The rest were pets and had names. And no, I’m not kidding unfortunately.
If you don’t want to wait for the lanlord, for a few bucks they sell now Roach control systems. They look like Roach motels, but they contain bait which the roaches take, and it ends up killing the whole colony. (Motels won’t solve a major investation.) This costs about 5-7 bucks. If you don’t want to spend even that much, Boric acid works great. Just spread behind or in cabinets, frigdes or anywhere around food areas. If you have kids, you can still use it, but make sure it’s an area where the kids can’t reach -high cabinets, on top of fridge, behind something that they can’t reach, etc…

What is the difference between a roach and a prune?
January 19, 2011 7:05 pm at 7:05 pm #729942AinOhdMilvadoParticipantDon’t wait!
Do NOT spray!
Do not use boric acid as it IS an acid and is dangerous for kids to touch, – plus it only works IF the roaches happen to go where you put it.
***Go get a tube ( a syringe actually) of roach bait gel. (Most supermarkets, drug stores or Home Depots have it).
This will ATTRACT the roaches to it, since they see it as food.
Put out little dabs or lines of it where you saw the roaches.
The roaches take the bait back to where the mishpacha is hiding and it kills them all. It may take a few days, but it works!
REPEAT: Do not spray insecticide -or even any cleaning sprays (like Fantastik) -near where you put the gel. Would YOU eat a food if it had been sprayed with Fantastik – neither will the roaches.
You can trust me on this one. It WORKS!

We didn’t have this available when I needed it 25 years ago. The roaches crawl along the walls, so if you put Boric Acid along those wall edges, they WILL go into it, bring it back to the nest and share it with the other roaches. It is only dangerous if INGESTED. Merely touching it does not hurt you (l’havdil kind of like the Eitz Hadaas).

January 20, 2011 2:06 am at 2:06 am #729950HealthParticipantESSS -That’s what I was talking about. Don’t use any spray or anything else with them. The gel is the same as what’s in the little bait houses, only kids and pets can’t get to them. I think Raid has two types -one stronger than the other. Obviously go with the stronger, even if it’s a little bit more money. It takes awhile to work, but they do work. Don’t even put down boric acid with the bait houses.
January 20, 2011 2:07 am at 2:07 am #729951HomeownerMemberEvery lease for residential premises in the state of New York carries with it an implied warranty that the space is fit for human habitation. That said, there is quite likely no court that will hold that a landlord cannot first try standard remedies such as those already recommended in this thread before calling an exterminator.
If you saw a few roaches and stop paying rent, you will quite likely find yourself the defendant in an eviction proceeding in which case you will need an attorney (not me).
I would recommend to first give the landlord a chance to cure the problem. You cannot get rid of roaches in one day.
Note well: an exterminator may possibly determine that the source of the roaches was your apartment. Then what?
