I just spoke with someone who voted yesterday in the ERCSD budget vote at the Hilcrest school building, who claims that there was major voter intimidation and even outright physical asults going on there.
Just a few exemples;
People were being told to sign their names many times claiming it does not look exectly the same.
Parents who brought along their kids were told to leave them outside the building, forcing them to choose between leaving their kids unattended or not to vote.
When a group of women from New Square arived with a bus they were told that the building is overcrowded and they have to wait outside, while at the same time they let non jews in to vote. When asked about the open discrimination the security gaurds answered that since the New Square group came as a group they can only enter the building as a group, so thats why they have to wait outside till everybody alse votes.
That same group from New Square who waited outside for more then an hour were then told that since it became 10pm they can no longer vote aldough thay arived moch before that time, because they were not in the building before 10pm, And they were trettend to be removed by the police who only backed of after the attorney for the school district told them to do so.
While people were signing in at least 3 poll watchers were hoovering over them, while the rules only alow one person to watch but not intimidate the voter.
In one case a young boy was pushed and his yarmulka was thrown while security was playing blind.
I was just wondering if anyone here in the CR wittnesed or heard anything about those claims and if yes why nobody filed a complaint.
May 18, 2011 11:22 pm at 11:22 pm #768297Pac-ManMemberdeiyezooger: I heard about this.
Did any of the frum candidates lose? I understand they all won. So apparently the intimidation didn’t work. Nevertheless, it should be severely investigated.
May 18, 2011 11:27 pm at 11:27 pm #768298deiyezoogerMemberThey all won by a margin of 2000 votes, but that is not the point. We are not living in the 1960’s when the KKK used to chase away black voters from the polls. These claims need to be investigated and if found to be true charges should be filed.

May 19, 2011 1:33 am at 1:33 am #768303YW Moderator-72ParticipantI voted at Kakiat. my card and the card of Mrs. 72 were not in the book as it was for many other long term voters in the district. They found us in the auxiliary books and we voted.
for all those that say it was us against them – the budget was voted down by a much larger vote than the candidate tally meaning that even the public school people realize something is wrong with a $200M budget for 7,500 public school kids and a few bones for the private School kids.
Additionally people should not confuse the schooling that is paid for children with developmental disabilities as money going to the private school sector – these children have a right under the education laws to a public school education and should be calculated into the public school enrollment. Some go to public schools within ERCSD and others are transported to other districts that can best service the individual and still others go to private institutions – each child deserves the best service that they can receive.
