What would be a more tznius-appropriate replacement idiom for the colloquial expression of “It ain’t over till the fat lady sings”?

1.Maybe she only sings for women and girls.

    2. Shouldn’t it be “until she says Aleinu” (unfortunately, in some shuls this is tefillat haderech).

I think the origin of that expression is more objectionable than only tznius.

Many operas (who frequently have “fat ladies”, women who need to have the capacity to project to a huge opera house) are not often concluded by a “fat woman” singing.

Mozart and Rossini usually have a chorus or ensemble.

Verdi and Puccini frequently have duets.

    Donizetti has a variety.

The type of opera that almost always is sung by a large woman because the orchestra is so large is Wagnerian opera.

About “being over”, the length of Wagner’s operas are always excessively long, so one would ask, “When is it going to be over(finally)?”

Wagner, has a preoccupation with women, especially in “Tristan und Isolde”, where I believe this expression came from, and the final scene has the “fat lady” singing until she dies.

So I think that, definitely, frum Yidden shouldn’t use this term.

There are some cute suggestions here, but if one wants to continue in the music mode of the original, one could say “till the cymbals clash and the timpani roll.”(Just got thru listening to Mahler.) 🙂

The cliche’s meaning would be lost on most Orthodox Jews since we rarely go to opera. An equivalent tha tmight be more familiar (since it can be traced to a former manager and players for both New York ball teams) is “it ain’t over till it’s over”.

You can tell this is a Yeshivish group.

Most have no understanding that most classical European opera ended with a fat female soprano singing over the body of the slain hero…etc.

Idioms don’t have to make sense. So since this is a made up idiom, it doesn’t even have to have a sensible origin:

Personally, I think that the real problem with the original is that it is so insulting and insensitive to women who are overweight. How about, “It ain’t over until the individual who happens to be female – but every bit an equal to a male – with a BMI index of 39 emits sounds that are pleasing to her, and keep your own opinion if you disagree to yourself!”

    Singing ladies aren’t tznius

Not true. You may not be able to listen to them, but they are free to sing in places where there is a reasonable expectation that men will not hear them.
